Chapter 31: Volume 1, Chapter 31: The First Start
At 08:15 on Saturday morning, the Sporting under-16 changing room at Alcochete smelled of fresh leather, deep-heat cream and damp winter air.
The whiteboard in the centre of the room was covered with red and blue magnets representing Sporting and Real SC. Twenty players stood or sat around it in dark-blue warm-up kits while Coach João Tavares held the final team sheet against his clipboard.
One week had passed since Rayan began the fourteen-day retention-review period.
Sunday had been devoted entirely to recovery. On Monday, Dr Fonseca cleared him for controlled jogging and changes of direction. Tuesday brought partial team integration, followed by two full but carefully monitored sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. The calf had remained stable throughout Friday’s activation block.
Rayan had followed every restriction.
No secret sprints. No extra work after training. No attempt to prove that he knew his body better than the medical staff.
Now, on Day Eight of the Sporting Retention Review, he waited to learn whether that discipline had earned him anything.
Tavares stepped towards the board.
"Gonçalo developed a fever overnight and will not be involved today," he announced. "Bernardo begins on the bench after completing the full workload in our previous fixtures. Duarte will operate inside as the attacking midfielder."
A faint rustle passed through the room.
Gonçalo had been expected to start on the left, with Duarte moving centrally to give the midfield more direct running. His absence left an opening.
Tavares looked towards Rayan.
"El Mansouri. You start on the left."
Rayan’s heart struck violently against his ribs.
For half a second, the room seemed to become silent around him.
His first competitive start.
The last month of early mornings, schoolwork, recovery exercises and simple football had finally placed his name among the starting eleven.
"Thank you, Coach," Rayan said, unable to prevent the pride from entering his voice. "I’ve worked hard for this. I won’t—"
"Stop."
Tavares’s expression remained cold.
"You are not starting because hard work automatically earns a reward. You are starting because one winger is ill, another requires load management and your recent performances have made you the next available option."
The excitement inside Rayan cooled into something steadier.
"Availability opened the position," Tavares continued. "Your performance will decide whether this becomes more than one match. Understand?"
"Yes, Coach."
"You completed the medical checks?"
"Cleared without restrictions."
Tavares nodded towards the bench. "Then get ready."
Rayan sat and reached for his boots. He tightened the laces carefully, then checked the light support sleeve around his right calf. The muscle felt normal. No stiffness, no warmth and no sharp reaction when he pressed his foot into the floor.
A system message appeared briefly.
[SPORTING RETENTION REVIEW]
[Day 8 of 14.]
[Competitive Opportunity: First Starting Appearance.]
[Medical Status: Cleared for unrestricted match participation.]
[Notice: Selection resulted from squad circumstances and recent development.]
[No future playing time is guaranteed.]
Rayan dismissed the interface.
It did not matter how the door had opened.
He was standing on the other side of it now.
The previous evening, preparation inside the Olivais apartment had been unusually calm.
Rayan had packed his own equipment before dinner. Sofia checked the food containers but did not repack the bag for him. His boots, shin guards, spare socks, academy identification and recovery clothing were all where they needed to be.
Karim had sent several voice messages during one of his delivery shifts.
Rayan listened while completing the calf routine prescribed by Dr Fonseca.
"I watched Real SC’s last match," Karim’s voice crackled through the phone speaker. "Their right-back attacks the first touch. He steps forwards before the winger controls the ball because he wants to force everything inside. Don’t fight him immediately. Give the first pass back, then attack the space he leaves."
Sofia looked up from the kitchen table. "That is surprisingly sensible."
Karim’s voice continued.
"Play the first ten minutes simply, my son. You don’t need to become Cristiano Ronaldo with your first touch. Build your rhythm. Let the match come towards you."
Rayan had almost laughed at hearing Karim advise restraint, but the words made sense.
Sofia placed the lid on the fruit container. "Your father is right about one thing."
"Only one?"
"Do not enter the match believing you must score immediately because this is your first start. Give the team what it needs."
Rayan nodded.
"Simple first actions," he said.
"Exactly."
---
At 10:00, the referee started the match on Pitch 1.
The morning drizzle had stopped, but the surface remained slick enough to increase the speed of every ground pass. Sporting lined up in a 4-3-3, with Rayan on the left, Duarte operating as the most advanced midfielder and Tiago Silva leading the attack.
Real SC defended in a compact 4-4-2 and pressed aggressively whenever Sporting played towards either fullback. Their right-back positioned himself several metres ahead of the defensive line, ready to attack Rayan’s first touch.
Rayan noticed it immediately.
Knowing what would happen did not prevent the nerves from affecting him.
His first involvement arrived in the fourth minute. Nuno recovered possession near the halfway line and passed firmly towards Rayan’s feet.
Rayan had time to return the ball.
Instead, the significance of his first starting touch entered his mind before the football did. He tried to turn towards Real SC’s goal in one movement, but his ankle remained too rigid. The ball travelled farther away than intended.
The right-back stepped in and won it.
Real SC attacked through the space Rayan had left, forcing Nuno to move across and block the resulting cross for a throw-in.
"Settle!" Rafa shouted from midfield. "First pass simple!"
Rayan raised one hand in acknowledgement.
Two minutes later, a bouncing clearance fell towards him outside the penalty area. Duarte was available inside, but Rayan rushed the pass before controlling the bounce properly. The ball travelled behind Duarte and crossed the touchline.
Duarte turned sharply. "Calm down, Rayan! You’re playing like the ball is burning you."
Heat rose through Rayan’s neck.
Two early involvements. Two losses.
The old panic began whispering that he needed to produce something spectacular before Tavares decided the start had been a mistake.
Rayan closed his eyes for one breath while retreating into position.
Next action.
A small warning appeared.
[EARLY-MATCH ANXIETY DETECTED]
[Current Effect: Rushed first-touch decisions.]
[Recommended Response: Reduce action complexity until rhythm stabilises.]
Real SC restarted from the throw-in and worked possession backwards.
Rayan adjusted his position.
He could not repair the first two mistakes. He could only make the third action better.
In the fourteenth minute, Rafa received under pressure and passed towards him again. Real SC’s right-back immediately stepped forwards.
This time, Rayan scanned before the ball arrived.
He cushioned it with the inside of his right foot and returned possession towards Nuno with his second touch. The fullback followed the pass, exactly as Karim had predicted.
Rayan turned and accelerated into the channel behind him.
Nuno did not play the return ball, choosing instead to pass into midfield, but Rayan’s movement dragged the defender away and allowed Rafa to receive with more space.
Sporting retained possession.
The sequence produced no shot or applause, yet the tension began leaving Rayan’s body.
Three minutes later, Real SC attacked along Sporting’s left. Their right winger carried possession inside while the fullback overlapped outside him.
Rayan recognised the run early and followed.
The pass entered the channel, but Rayan stayed goal-side and matched the fullback’s movement. When the defender attempted to cross, Rayan extended his left foot and deflected the ball against his shin.
Throw-in to Sporting.
"Good tracking!" Tavares called.
Rayan jogged back into position.
His first start had finally begun.
Sporting took control as the half progressed.
Rafa dropped between the centre-backs to escape Real SC’s opening press, allowing Tomás and Duarte to operate higher. Rayan remained wide enough to stretch the defensive line, while Nuno selected his overlapping runs more carefully.
In the twenty-third minute, Duarte received between the lines and switched possession towards Rayan.
The right-back stepped forwards.
Rayan returned the ball towards Nuno with one touch and moved immediately behind the defender. Nuno found Duarte inside, and Duarte lifted the next pass into the open channel.
Rayan accelerated.
He reached the ball near the outer edge of the penalty area and crossed first time with his left foot. The delivery lacked the pace of his Benfica cross, but it travelled beyond the right-back and forced Real SC’s centre-back to clear behind.
Sporting won a corner.
Joca was not part of the academy squad, so Tomás walked across to take it. His delivery curled towards the penalty spot, where Afonso rose above his marker and headed into the bottom corner.
Sporting CP U16 1–0 Real SC U16.
Rayan joined the celebration near the corner flag, striking Afonso’s back before quickly returning towards the halfway line.
The goal reduced some of the pressure, but Real SC responded by increasing their physical aggression. Their midfielders began stepping through challenges, while the fullbacks advanced earlier in search of an equaliser.
Rayan continued working defensively. In the thirty-first minute, he followed the right-back into Sporting’s third and helped Nuno trap him near the touchline. Rafa collected the loose ball and launched a counterattack through Duarte.
Duarte carried possession through the middle and passed into Tiago Silva. The striker attempted to turn, but Real SC’s centre-back prevented the shot.
The ball rolled towards Rayan outside the box.
He could have struck first time.
Instead, he returned it towards Rafa and allowed Sporting to rebuild.
Tavares clapped once from the touchline.
Then, in the thirty-sixth minute, Rayan’s restraint disappeared.
Duarte received in the central pocket and turned away from his marker. Real SC’s right-back had stepped forwards again, leaving the left channel completely open.
Rayan sprinted behind him.
Duarte slipped an excellent pass between the fullback and centre-back, placing Rayan through on the left side of the penalty area.
Rayan controlled with his right foot and entered the box.
The goalkeeper shifted towards the near post. The nearest centre-back recovered across the six-yard area.
Duarte continued running.
He was completely unmarked near the far side of the penalty spot. A low square pass would have left him with an almost empty goal.
Rayan saw him.
He also saw the opportunity to score in his first start.
For a fraction of a second, the desire to place his name on the scoresheet overwhelmed everything he had learned.
He opened his body and shot towards the far corner.
The effort travelled across goal and struck the outside of the side netting.
Duarte stopped inside the box with both arms extended.
"Rayan! I’m alone!"
Rayan placed both hands on his head.
The correct option had been obvious. He had not missed Duarte because of poor vision. He had ignored him.
Tavares made a sharp note on his clipboard.
The system recorded the decision without interrupting the match.
[FINAL-THIRD DECISION ERROR]
[Open square pass identified before shot.]
[User selected lower-quality individual finish.]
[Primary Cause: Desire for personal scoring recognition.]
Rayan dismissed the message and jogged back.
Duarte reached him near the halfway line. "If I give you that pass again, move it across."
"I know."
"Then why didn’t you?"
Rayan looked at him. "I wanted a goal."
Duarte stared for a moment, apparently surprised by the honest answer.
"Next time, prioritize the assist."
They returned to their positions.
The second half became more physical.
Real SC pushed both fullbacks forwards and sent direct passes towards their two strikers. Sporting’s defensive line dropped several metres, while Rayan and the right winger were required to protect the wide areas.
Rayan’s calf remained stable.
The first forty-five minutes had produced no pain or tightness, but he remained conscious of every acceleration. He did not hesitate when the tactical situation required a sprint, yet he avoided the unnecessary chasing that had contributed to the injury.
In the fifty-third minute, Real SC switched possession towards their right side. The fullback overlapped once again, creating a two-against-one against Nuno.
Rayan tracked him into the defensive third.
The winger passed outside. Rayan arrived before the cross, positioned his body between the defender and the penalty area and forced him backwards.
Real SC recycled possession.
Two minutes later, they attacked through the same channel. This time, the fullback crossed early. Rayan could not block the delivery, but his pressure forced the defender to strike while off balance.
Afonso headed clear.
"Good work, Rayan!" Nuno shouted. "Stay connected!"
Rayan’s lungs began burning, but the stamina point he had allocated after the Foundation Challenge helped him maintain his effort. It did not remove fatigue; it allowed him to continue functioning more effectively while tired.
In the fifty-eighth minute, Sporting recovered possession and launched another transition. Rafa passed towards Duarte, who turned and looked for Rayan immediately.
Rayan moved into the left channel.
The pass arrived slightly behind him. He slowed, controlled and returned it inside rather than attempting to force his way past the recovering fullback.
Duarte switched play towards the right, where Sporting earned a free kick.
As players gathered near Real SC’s penalty area, Duarte jogged past Rayan.
"Now that was the pass."
At 62:14, the fourth official raised the substitution board.
Rayan’s number appeared in red.
His legs felt heavy as he jogged towards the touchline, but his right calf remained pain-free. He struck the incoming winger’s hand and stepped outside the pitch.
Tavares waited beside the technical area.
"Good work," the coach said. "You protected Nuno and gave us an outlet."
Rayan nodded between breaths. "Thank you."
"We will discuss the thirty-sixth minute on Monday."
"Yes, Coach."
Tavares placed one hand briefly against his shoulder. "Recover properly."
Rayan lowered himself onto the bench while a member of the medical staff checked his calf. No swelling or abnormal reaction had developed.
Sporting protected the narrow lead through the final half-hour. Real SC created one late opportunity from a corner, but Diogo gathered the header securely.
The final whistle confirmed the result.
Sporting CP U16 1–0 Real SC U16.
Rayan had not scored or assisted.
He had also completed sixty-two minutes in his first start, contributed defensively and helped Sporting maintain its structure.
The missed pass remained the clearest stain on the performance.
---
That evening, the Olivais kitchen was warm with the smell of baked chicken, rice and garlic.
Karim had arrived after completing a delivery shift and sat at the end of the table in his work jacket. He had watched most of the academy stream on his phone and now retold the match as though he had been standing beside Tavares.
"That cross in the first half was beautiful," he declared. "The right-back didn’t know whether to follow Rayan or ask him for directions."
Sofia placed a bowl of salad on the table. "He also ignored Duarte when a pass would have created an easy goal."
Karim waved one hand. "Wingers need selfishness."
"Not when a teammate is standing alone in front of goal."
Rayan looked down at his plate. "Mum is right."
Karim paused.
"I saw Duarte," Rayan continued. "I wanted to score because it was my first start."
Sofia sat beside him. "And what will you do next time?"
"Pass."
"Then the mistake has taught you something."
Karim pointed his fork towards Rayan. "But when the pass is not open, shoot without fear."
Sofia looked at him. "That is not what happened."
"I am speaking generally."
Rayan laughed before either parent could turn the discussion into an argument.
"I played sixty-two minutes," he said. "The calf held, and we won. Can we enjoy that part?"
Sofia’s expression softened. "Yes. You should be proud of the work you did for the team."
Karim raised his glass. "To the first start."
Rayan lifted his water.
"To the first start."
At 21:45, Rayan lay in bed with his calf supported by a folded towel.
The interface appeared.
