Chapter 24: Volume 1, Chapter 24: Thirty Minutes vs Benfica

The first half had begun beneath a low grey sky, with light rain turning the surface of Pitch 1 slick and quick. Nearly four hundred spectators stood behind the barriers and filled the academy’s small main stand, their umbrellas forming dark shapes against the green pitch. Coaches from other age groups occupied the gantry, while several academy officials watched from behind the technical areas.

Sporting started in a 4-3-3. Diogo played in goal behind Miguel, Duarte Lopes, Afonso and Nuno. Nunes held the deepest midfield position, with Tomás and Matias ahead of him. Bernardo began on the right, Duarte Faria on the left and Tiago Silva through the centre.

Benfica used a similar shape but pressed through an aggressive 4-1-4-1. Their striker curved his runs to block passes between Sporting’s centre-backs, while the two advanced midfielders closed Nunes from either side. The wide players remained narrow until the ball travelled towards a Sporting fullback, then exploded outwards to trap him near the line.

The opening chance arrived in the fourth minute.

Afonso attempted to pass into Nunes, but Benfica’s number eight anticipated the lane and intercepted. He drove towards the penalty area before releasing the left winger, who cut inside Miguel and struck low towards the near corner.

Diogo dropped quickly and blocked the shot with both hands.

Sporting struggled to escape. Nuno received several passes near the left touchline, only to find Duarte already marked and Benfica’s right winger closing from the front. On the opposite flank, Bernardo repeatedly arrived late to support Miguel, leaving the right-back isolated against two opponents.

In the twelfth minute, Benfica moved possession from one side to the other with six uninterrupted passes. Their right-back received wide, played inside to the midfielder and immediately continued his run. Duarte followed the ball instead of tracking him, allowing the return pass to enter the channel behind Sporting’s left side.

The resulting cross travelled towards the back post.

Benfica’s left winger rose above Miguel and headed downwards, but Diogo shifted across his line and pushed the ball away with his left hand.

Rayan watched from the bench with his jacket zipped to his chin. The pace looked higher than the Sacavenense match. Benfica rarely held the ball unnecessarily. Every player seemed to know where the next passing option would appear before receiving.

Sporting created their first promising attack in the eighteenth minute. Nunes dropped between the centre-backs to escape Benfica’s midfield pressure, allowing Afonso to carry possession forwards. Afonso passed into Tomás, who turned and found Duarte in the left half-space.

Duarte attacked immediately.

He skipped beyond Benfica’s number six with a sharp touch and accelerated towards the penalty area, but he ignored Nuno’s overlapping run and attempted to beat the centre-back as well. The defender delayed him long enough for the right-back to recover, and Duarte eventually lost possession between the two.

Tavares threw one hand towards the open flank. "Use the runner! He gave you the second action!"

Duarte jogged back without responding.

Benfica regained control and continued forcing Sporting deeper. Their centre-backs advanced close to the halfway line, compressing the pitch and ensuring that every Sporting clearance returned quickly.

In the twenty-sixth minute, Benfica almost scored from that pressure. Bernardo attempted to clear a loose ball near the edge of the area but struck it directly towards their defensive midfielder. He controlled with his chest and volleyed through a crowd of players.

The shot clipped Duarte Lopes and changed direction.

Diogo had already moved left, but he managed to extend his right foot and divert the ball away from goal. Afonso completed the clearance before Benfica’s striker could reach the rebound.

The home support applauded the goalkeeper, but the warning was obvious.

Sporting improved slightly during the final fifteen minutes of the half. Nunes began moving away from Benfica’s first pressing line before the centre-backs received, while Matias dropped towards him to create a temporary midfield pair. That allowed Tomás to position himself higher between the lines.

In the thirty-fifth minute, Nunes and Matias combined through pressure before releasing Bernardo on the right. Bernardo drove forwards and sent a low cross towards Tiago Silva, but Benfica’s nearest centre-back intercepted at the near post.

Sporting won the second ball, and Tomás struck from outside the area. The shot travelled over the crossbar, but it was the first time Benfica’s defensive shape had been forced backwards.

The final chance of the half belonged to Benfica. Their left winger drew Miguel inside and slipped the overlapping fullback towards the byline. His cutback found the arriving number eight near the penalty spot.

Nunes recovered and blocked the shot with a sliding challenge.

The referee’s whistle ended the half before Benfica could take the resulting corner.

Half-Time: Sporting CP U16 0–0 SL Benfica U16.

Te Sporting under-16 changing room at Alcochete smelled of winter rain, damp socks and deep-heat liniment.

Through the walls, the muffled noise of the crowd gathered around Pitch 1 drifted into the room. The Lisbon Derby remained goalless at half-time, but the scoreboard concealed how uncomfortable the opening forty-five minutes had been for Sporting. Benfica’s coordinated high press had repeatedly forced the home side backwards, while their quick positional rotations created overloads on both flanks.

Rayan sat near the end of the substitute bench with his hands resting flat on his thighs. Sofia’s dark-blue Adidas Copas fitted securely around his feet, their laces tied in firm double knots. Karim’s undersized white boots remained inside the side compartment of his academy bag, out of sight but impossible to forget.

Coach João Tavares stood in front of the tactical board, moving magnets through Sporting’s right defensive channel.

"They are creating a three-against-two whenever their left-back advances," he said, his marker tapping against the board. "Bernardo is following the ball instead of the runner, and Miguel is being forced to defend two players. If their winger comes inside, the wide midfielder has to track the overlap immediately."

Bernardo sat with a towel across his shoulders, breathing heavily. He nodded without looking up.

Tavares moved the left-wing magnet representing Duarte Faria. "Duarte, you are receiving too close to the touchline and waiting for the fullback to arrive before making your decision. When the central lane is open, release the ball. You will not beat Benfica by collecting defenders around you."

Duarte took a drink from his bottle, his jaw tightening, but he remained silent.

The first half had demonstrated the problem clearly. Sporting were defending in a 4-1-4-1, with Nunes positioned between the lines to protect the space in front of the centre-backs. Benfica responded by moving one central midfielder towards Nunes, drawing him away from the defensive line while the other dropped deeper to control possession. Their wingers then entered the half-spaces, allowing the fullbacks to advance outside them.

Whenever Sporting won the ball, Benfica counter-pressed before the players could spread out.

Tavares drew a second line through the middle of the board. "We do not need to play through every pressure. If the central route is closed, secure the first pass and attack the space behind their fullbacks. They are leaving it early because they do not respect our threat in transition."

His eyes moved towards the substitutes.

"Rayan."

Rayan straightened immediately. "Yes, Coach."

"Begin warming up when we return to the pitch."

A pulse travelled through Rayan’s chest.

Tavares continued before he could interpret the instruction as a promise. "You are not guaranteed to enter. Prepare as though you are."

"Understood."

The coach looked across the entire room. "This match is level because Diogo made two good saves and Benfica failed to punish our errors. That will not continue for another half. Stop playing the occasion and start playing the actions in front of you."

The players rose from the benches.

Rayan followed the substitutes towards the tunnel, his breathing controlled despite the pressure building beneath his ribs.

Thirty minutes or none.

He had to be ready for both.

The second half began with Benfica pressing at the same intensity.

Rayan jogged along the touchline with two other substitutes, completing short accelerations and checking the match between each movement. Rain clung to his eyelashes and darkened the shoulders of his training top.

In the forty-eighth minute, Benfica’s right winger received inside and turned away from Nuno. Duarte failed to recover quickly enough, leaving the fullback free on the overlap. The pass reached him near the outer edge of the penalty area, and his low cross travelled through Sporting’s six-yard box without a final touch.

Tavares stepped towards the assistant coach. They exchanged several words before the coach looked towards the warm-up area.

"Rayan! Increase the intensity!"

Rayan accelerated towards the corner flag and back. His heart hammered against his ribs, but he kept his breathing steady.

Benfica continued creating pressure through Sporting’s left side. Duarte was working defensively, but his response remained reactive. He chased the fullback only after the run had already begun, forcing Nuno to choose between confronting the winger and protecting the channel behind him.

In the fifty-second minute, Sporting recovered possession and attempted to counter. Nunes passed into Duarte near the halfway line. Nuno sprinted outside him, while Tomás offered a central option.

Duarte carried the ball instead.

Benfica’s right-back delayed him, and their number six arrived from behind to complete the tackle. The opportunity disappeared.

Tavares turned towards the bench. "Rayan, remove the top."

Rayan pulled the warm-up shirt over his head and sprinted towards the technical area.

The coach placed one hand on his upper arm and directed his attention towards the tactical board.

"You are entering on the left," Tavares said. "Duarte moves to the right. Bernardo comes off."

Rayan nodded.

"Their right-back is advancing whenever they secure the first central pass. Track him immediately. Do not wait for Nuno to call you. When we recover possession, provide the outlet and protect the ball long enough for the midfield to move forwards."

"Yes, Coach."

"They will press your first touch. Scan before the pass arrives."

Rayan swallowed. "Understood."

Tavares tightened his grip slightly. "Your first mistake does not decide your performance. Your next action does."

The fourth official prepared the board.

"Do not play like someone trying to save his career," Tavares added. "Play the role."

Rayan stepped towards the halfway line.

At 58:17, the board rose above the official’s head.

11 appeared in green.

7 appeared in red.

Bernardo jogged off the pitch and struck Rayan’s hand as they passed.

Rayan entered.

[TACTICAL DEPLOYMENT VERIFIED]

[Position: Left Winger.]

[Primary Responsibilities:]

[— Track Benfica’s advancing right-back.]

[— Provide a secure outlet during defensive transitions.]

[— Initiate pressure when the ball enters Benfica’s right defensive channel.]

[Estimated Regulation Time Remaining: Thirty-two minutes.]

The noise of the Derby became sharper from inside the pitch. Teammates shouted from several directions at once, the crowd reacted to every challenge and the wet ball travelled with more speed than it had appeared to possess from the bench.

Rayan moved towards his defensive position beside Nuno.

His first involvement arrived less than twenty seconds later.

Duarte Lopes won a header inside Sporting’s penalty area and directed the ball towards the left flank. It bounced once on the slick surface before travelling towards Rayan.

Rayan stepped forwards to receive, but his body was tight with nervous energy. He attempted to cushion the ball using the inside of his right foot, but his ankle remained too rigid.

The ball struck his boot and bounced nearly three metres away.

Benfica’s right-back collected it immediately.

A groan rose from the home stand.

"Hold it!" Duarte shouted from the opposite side. "You just came on!"

The fullback passed inside before Rayan could recover, and Benfica resumed their attack. Their number eight switched possession towards the left, where Sporting’s defensive line shifted across to prevent the shot.

Heat climbed through Rayan’s neck. The mistake had happened in front of the coaches, the crowd and everyone responsible for deciding whether he would remain at Sporting.

For a second, panic urged him to manufacture an immediate response.

A warning appeared.

[TACTICAL ANXIETY DETECTED]

[Current Response Risk: The user may attempt an unnecessary corrective action.]

[Reminder: Return to baseline behaviour.]

[One error does not require a spectacular response.]

Rayan drew a slow breath as Sporting’s defensive shape moved around him.

’Next action.’

Benfica recycled possession through their centre-backs. The ball travelled towards the right-sided defender, who opened his body to find the fullback.

Rayan watched the pass leave his foot and accelerated.

He did not sprint directly towards the ball. He curved his run from the inside, blocking the pass into Benfica’s central midfielder and forcing the right-back towards the touchline.

The defender received under pressure and attempted to move inside.

Rayan slowed before overcommitting, kept his hips square and followed the movement. With the central lane blocked, the fullback turned backwards and played towards the centre-back.

"Good!" Nunes shouted from midfield. "Hold him there!"

Rayan retreated into shape.

Nothing dramatic had happened. He had forced Benfica to move the ball fifteen metres away from Sporting’s goal.

Two minutes later, Benfica attacked down the same side. Their right winger received inside while the fullback sprinted beyond him. Rayan recognised the movement before the pass was played and followed the runner.

The winger attempted to release him into the channel.

Rayan matched the fullback’s acceleration and reached the ball first, using his left foot to poke it against the opponent’s shin.

Throw-in to Sporting.

Nuno pointed towards him. "That’s it. Keep going with him."

Rayan collected the ball for the restart and placed it in Nuno’s hands. His breathing had settled.

In the sixty-third minute, Sporting gave him another opportunity in possession. Nunes escaped pressure near the centre circle and drove a pass towards Rayan’s feet.

Before it arrived, Rayan scanned over his right shoulder.

Benfica’s fullback was approaching from behind, while their number eight moved across to trap him from inside. Tomás was available in the central channel.

Rayan cushioned the pass with his right foot and played inside with his second touch.

He immediately moved forwards.

Tomás returned the ball around the corner before Benfica’s number eight could turn. Rayan received in stride and carried possession beyond the halfway line, forcing the fullback to retreat for the first time since his introduction.

Nuno overlapped outside him. Nunes continued through the centre.

Rayan could have attempted to dribble inside, but Benfica’s number six was already shifting towards the lane. He played backwards to Nuno and continued his run, dragging the fullback with him.

Nuno switched possession into midfield, and Sporting retained the ball for another twenty seconds.

The move ended without a shot, but the team had escaped Benfica’s pressure and advanced as a unit.

Tavares clapped from the technical area. "That’s the outlet! Again!"

The match began to change subtly.

Benfica still controlled more possession, but their pressing lost some of its earlier precision. Their midfielders had covered large distances, and the advancing fullbacks were becoming slower to recover. Sporting began finding temporary openings after the first pass.

In the sixty-seventh minute, Diogo played short to Afonso. Benfica’s striker pressed from the front, blocking the return pass to the goalkeeper. Afonso passed towards Nunes, who was immediately closed by number eight.

Nunes used one touch to release Matias.

Matias turned and played diagonally towards Rayan near the touchline.

Rayan scanned. The right-back was tight behind him, and the centre-back had shifted across to provide cover.

Instead of attempting to turn, Rayan protected the ball with his body and passed backwards to Nuno. The fullback returned it inside to Tomás, who switched towards Duarte on the opposite wing.

Duarte received with space and drove towards Benfica’s penalty area. His shot from twenty metres travelled over the crossbar.

Rayan jogged towards the box before turning to recover his position.

Duarte glanced towards him as they moved back. "You could have turned."

"There were two players behind me."

"So beat one."

Rayan did not answer. Benfica had nearly collapsed their entire left side towards him, and Sporting had produced a shot after switching away from the pressure.

The decision had worked.

In the seventieth minute, Benfica created their best chance of the second half.

Their number six collected possession near the centre circle and lifted a pass over Sporting’s midfield. The left winger controlled inside Miguel, drew Afonso towards him and slipped the striker into the penalty area.

The striker struck low across goal.

Diogo extended his right leg and blocked the effort. The rebound travelled towards Benfica’s number ten, who prepared to finish from close range.

Nunes slid across and deflected the shot behind.

The visitors appealed for a handball, but the referee pointed towards the corner flag.

Rayan tracked Benfica’s right-back into the penalty area for the set piece. The defender positioned himself near the back post, attempting to hide behind Duarte Lopes.

The corner curled towards the six-yard box. Diogo punched through the crowd, and the clearance dropped towards the edge of the area.

Benfica’s number eight struck it first time.

Rayan left the fullback and sprinted towards the ball. He turned his body, and the shot struck his left hip before deflecting towards the touchline.

Pain spread through his side, but he followed the ball and reached it before Benfica’s winger.

The winger pressed from behind.

Rayan placed his body between the defender and the ball, absorbed the contact and knocked it forwards towards Nuno.

Sporting escaped.

The home supporters applauded as the team advanced.

Rayan did not hear individual voices, but the sound travelled through him. His first poor touch had already faded into the match.

At 73:40, the system issued a brief update.

[CURRENT MATCH RESPONSE]

[Initial anxiety spike stabilised.]

[Defensive assignments completed: Three.]

[Possession losses following first error: Zero.]

[Competitive Composure behaviour: Active.]

Rayan dismissed the message before Benfica restarted.

There was still too much football left.

The final fifteen minutes became increasingly open.

Both teams wanted the victory, and the compact structure of the first half began to fracture under fatigue. Benfica’s midfielders pressed with less support behind them, while Sporting’s attacking players found more room to receive between the lines.

In the seventy-sixth minute, Nunes intercepted a pass near Sporting’s penalty area and immediately released Tomás. Tomás carried possession through midfield before playing towards Duarte on the right.

Duarte attacked Benfica’s left-back, shifted the ball onto his stronger foot and crossed towards the near post.

Tiago Silva reached it under pressure but headed wide.

Sporting’s bench rose as the ball struck the advertising board.

Two minutes later, Benfica responded. Their right-back advanced again and combined with the winger inside. Rayan tracked the overlap, but the winger retained possession and switched across the pitch instead.

Benfica’s left winger received against Miguel, moved onto his right foot and curled a shot towards the far corner.

The ball travelled narrowly wide.

The crowd released a collective breath.

At 79:12, Sporting recovered possession deep inside their half. Bernardo’s replacement won a tackle in midfield and passed quickly towards Nunes. Benfica’s centre-backs had advanced close to the halfway line, while their fullbacks remained high.

Nunes turned into open space.

"Left!" Rayan shouted.

Nunes looked up and slid a diagonal pass into the channel.

Rayan accelerated.

The ball travelled quickly across the wet turf, but his first touch with the inside of his right foot carried it smoothly into his stride. He crossed the halfway line and entered the attacking third with Benfica’s right-back retreating in front of him.

The fullback closed the central route, angling his hips to prevent Rayan from cutting onto his stronger right foot. Their nearest centre-back shifted across behind him, preparing to double-team if Rayan slowed.

Rayan recognised the trap.

’They expect me to come inside.’

The outside lane remained open.

He nudged the ball forwards with his left foot.

The right-back hesitated, surprised by the direction, and Rayan gained half a metre. He accelerated towards the byline, taking another left-footed touch to prevent the defender from recovering across his body.

The ball moved quickly over the wet surface. Rayan reached it near the outer edge of the penalty area and raised his head.

Sporting’s striker was sprinting towards the near post. Tomás entered the centre, while Duarte attacked the far side from the opposite wing.

Rayan swung his left foot through the ball.

The contact was clean.

The cross travelled low and hard between Benfica’s goalkeeper and the retreating defensive line. It skidded through the six-yard area at a speed that made interception difficult for both sides.

Sporting’s substitute striker lunged at the far post.

His boot met the ball.

Clack.

The effort struck the outside of the upright and flew behind.

The Sporting bench released a collective groan. Several supporters behind the goal had already begun celebrating before the sound of the post cut them off.

Rayan continued his momentum beyond the byline, caught himself against the barrier and turned towards the penalty area.

The striker stood beside the post with both hands covering his face.

Then he looked towards Rayan and raised one thumb. "Great ball!"

Rayan clenched both fists for a second.

It had been close enough to become his first official academy assist. Close enough to decide the Derby. Close enough to change how everyone discussed his performance.

But it had not gone in.

He jogged back into position.

There was no time to mourn the centimetres between the ball and the inside of the post.

Benfica restarted quickly, attempting to attack before Sporting could recover. Their goalkeeper passed short to the right centre-back, who found the fullback.

Rayan pressed again, curving his run to close the inside pass.

This time, the fullback played over him towards the winger.

Nuno challenged for the header but could not direct it cleanly. The ball dropped towards Benfica’s number eight, who drove through midfield with space ahead.

Nunes stepped out.

The midfielder passed beyond him towards the striker, who laid it off for the arriving number ten.

The shot came from twenty-two metres.

Diogo dived to his left and pushed the ball around the post.

Both benches were standing now.

The referee signalled five minutes remaining.

Benfica sent the corner towards the near post. Duarte Lopes headed clear, and Rayan collected the second ball near the left edge of the area. Benfica’s right-back charged towards him, attempting to prevent the counterattack before it began.

Rayan touched the ball forwards but realised Nuno was still inside the box and no support had reached the flank.

He turned backwards and protected possession.

The defender struck through his ankle but failed to reach the ball.

The referee blew for a free kick.

Rayan remained on the turf for a second, allowing the pain to settle, then rose without looking towards the official for a card.

"Slow down," Tavares instructed from the sideline. "Let the team move up."

Rayan placed the ball and waited until his teammates had spread across the pitch. He passed short towards Afonso rather than launching it forwards.

Sporting retained possession for nearly a minute.

In the eighty-sixth minute, Tomás received between the lines and attempted to turn. Benfica’s defensive midfielder brought him down near the centre circle, earning the first yellow card of the match.

Matias sent the free kick towards the penalty area.

Duarte Lopes rose highest but directed his header over the crossbar.

Benfica attacked again in the eighty-eighth minute. Their left winger carried possession inside and switched towards the right. Rayan followed the fullback into Sporting’s defensive third, staying close enough to prevent him from receiving cleanly.

The pass arrived slightly behind the defender.

Rayan stepped around him and intercepted.

He could have attempted to dribble away, but Benfica’s number eight was already approaching. He passed inside towards Nunes and sprinted forwards to offer the return.

Nunes instead switched the ball towards Duarte.

Duarte attacked the left-back and drove a low effort towards the near post. Benfica’s goalkeeper gathered it securely.

The fourth official raised the board.

Three minutes of additional time.

The match became a sequence of clearances, tackles and hurried transitions. Both teams had lost the precision required to control the middle of the pitch.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Benfica launched a long pass behind Nuno. Their right winger reached it near the corner and attempted to cross before Rayan could recover.

Rayan sprinted from the midfield line, closed the distance and extended his left leg. The cross struck his boot and flew behind.

Corner.

He placed both hands on his knees, dragging air into his lungs.

Nuno struck his shoulder. "One more."

Rayan nodded.

Benfica sent both centre-backs forwards. The corner travelled high towards the back post, where their tallest defender headed it down into the six-yard box.

Afonso cleared with his right foot.

The ball dropped outside the area, and Benfica’s number ten attempted another volley. Tomás blocked it, allowing Nunes to collect the rebound and pass towards Rayan.

Rayan received near the touchline with the right-back behind him.

He protected the ball, absorbed one challenge and nudged it against the defender’s shin.

Throw-in to Sporting.

The home support roared as though he had scored.

Matias walked slowly across to take the restart. Rayan moved towards the corner, received the throw and used his body to shield possession once more. The fullback tried to push him away from the ball, but Rayan remained upright long enough to earn another throw.

More seconds disappeared.

Sporting eventually lost possession with less than thirty seconds remaining. Benfica’s centre-back drove a desperate pass towards the striker, but Duarte Lopes won the header.

Nunes collected the second ball and cleared towards the right side.

The referee checked his watch.

Three blasts of the whistle cut through the academy air.

Full-Time: Sporting CP U16 0–0 SL Benfica U16.

Rayan stopped near the halfway line, his hands dropping towards his knees. His chest rose through heavy breaths, his left hip ached from the blocked shot and his calves trembled after repeated recovery runs.

He had played just over thirty minutes.

He had not scored.

His best cross had produced nothing more than the sound of a ball striking the post.

Yet when he straightened, Nuno walked over and struck him lightly on the back.

"You followed that fullback everywhere," he said. "I could finally defend one player instead of two."

Nunes offered his hand. "The first touch was terrible."

Rayan stared at him.

Nunes’s expression broke into a grin. "Everything after it was good."

Rayan laughed and pulled him into a brief shoulder bump.

Duarte walked past them, his shirt soaked and his face tight with frustration. He had produced several dangerous actions but no goal, and Tavares had repeatedly criticised his decisions.

Rayan did not look for his approval.

The changing room carried a different energy after the match. Nobody celebrated a draw, but there was relief in the players’ voices. Benfica had created more chances during the first half, while Sporting had produced the clearest opportunity after the break. Neither side had been able to claim the Derby.

Rayan sat at his locker and removed Sofia’s boots. Mud and black rubber pellets clung to the studs, but the material remained secure around the sole.

Karim’s white boots were still inside his bag.

Tavares entered after completing the media and staff obligations outside. The room quietened as he moved between the benches.

"That was not a perfect performance," he said. "We spent too much of the first half defending the consequences of our own slow decisions. In the second half, the structure improved because the wide players tracked their assignments and gave us outlets."

His gaze moved towards Rayan.

"Your first touch after entering was poor."

Several players looked over.

Rayan nodded. "Yes, Coach."

"You did not allow it to become your second mistake." Tavares folded his arms. "You recovered, followed the tactical instruction and created our best chance. That is the standard. Not perfection. Response."

He looked around the room once more. "Recovery tomorrow. Development meetings begin next week."

The final sentence removed any relief from the atmosphere.

Retention decisions were still waiting.

Tavares turned to leave, then stopped beside Rayan’s locker.

"Thirty good minutes," he said quietly. "Keep building from them."

"Thank you, Coach."

Tavares continued towards the corridor.

Duarte stood near the showers with a sports drink in one hand. "Thirty good minutes?" he muttered loudly enough for several players to hear. "He crossed one ball that ended in a goal kick. We scored nothing."

Rayan looked towards him.

A week earlier, the comment would have entered his chest like a needle. He would have argued, listed every defensive action or pointed out how many times Duarte had lost possession.

Today, he placed his boots inside his bag and pulled the zip closed.

"The striker hit the post," Nunes said from the next locker.

Duarte shrugged. "The scoreboard still says zero."

"It says zero for both teams," Rayan replied calmly. "That’s why we defended."

Duarte’s expression tightened, but Rayan had already turned away.

The conversation was over.

Outside Pitch 1, supporters moved slowly towards the academy car park. The rain had stopped, leaving the air cold and the pavement shining beneath the grey afternoon light.

Sofia stood near the barrier with her handbag held beneath one arm. Karim waited several steps away, both hands pushed into the pockets of his faded jumper. The space between them carried enough tension that Rayan noticed it before either spoke.

"...you should have told me you were buying them," Karim said as Rayan approached. His voice was low but strained. "I said I would handle the boots."

"You said many things," Sofia replied. "He needed a pair that fitted before the match."

"I brought him boots."

"You brought a size forty-one."

"I made a mistake."

"You missed Leonor’s showcase while making it."

Karim’s face hardened. "I was trying to find the money."

"And she was sitting in a school corridor."

"Stop."

The word came from Rayan quietly, but both parents froze.

He stood between them with his academy bag over one shoulder. Exhaustion weighed across his face, but his voice remained steady.

"Please stop."

Sofia’s mouth closed. Karim looked away.

"For the first time in months, I played without feeling afraid of every mistake," Rayan said. "My first touch was bad, but I didn’t panic. I tracked the fullback, helped the team and created a chance. Coach Tavares said I did my job."

He looked from his mother’s tired expression towards his father’s defensive posture.

"I feel proud of what I did today. I don’t want to stand in a car park and listen to you argue about which pair of boots deserves credit for it."

Neither parent answered.

"Mum bought the pair that fitted because I needed them. Dad tried to buy another pair because he wanted to help. Those things aren’t equal, and pretending they are would be dishonest. But arguing here won’t change any of it."

Karim’s eyes dropped towards the pavement.

Rayan continued more quietly. "You both love me. I know that. But sometimes the way you fight makes everything about the two of you. Today is not about who won an argument."

The car park fell silent around them except for the sound of departing vehicles and distant voices from the academy entrance.

Sofia looked at her son carefully. Her shoulders lowered as the anger left them.

"You’re right," she said.

Karim rubbed one hand across his jaw. He appeared older than he had beneath the morning security lights.

"Good match, son," he muttered. "That cross deserved a goal."

Rayan gave him a tired smile. "It was close."

Sofia reached for Rayan’s hand and squeezed it. "You defended well."

"You noticed that?"

"I spent thirty minutes listening to your father announce every movement to the entire stand."

Karim raised his head. "The people appreciated the analysis."

"The people moved three rows away."

A small laugh escaped Rayan before he could stop it.

At 15:00, Rayan lay across his bed in the Olivais apartment with a rolled towel beneath his left calf. His body carried the dull ache of a match played on wet turf, but his mind felt calmer than it had before kick-off.

"Interface," he whispered.

The indigo display appeared above him.

Rayan stared at the line recording the possession loss.

The system had not erased the mistake or hidden it behind the successful cross. It had recorded both. One poor first touch. Eight completed passes. Four defensive tracking actions. One high-quality chance.

That felt more truthful than calling the match brilliant or meaningless.

Rayan closed his eyes.
