Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Went Away with the Old Scrap Collector
’Strange, why isn’t anyone replying to my messages?’
"Fam, why is everyone so quiet? No slacking off today?"
"Weird, why are you guys so quiet in the group chat today? It’s like the boss is here, dead silent. He just got kicked out of the livestream by the Young Madam, hahaha, I’m dying..."
Immediately after, Lu Shijing asked in the group, "You have too much free time?"
Lin Kai tremblingly apologized, retracted his message, and said, "It’s April Fool’s Day, I was telling a bad joke, hahaha..."
Then he checked his phone and saw it was flooded with private messages from colleagues telling him he’d posted in the wrong group.
It was because Lin Kai got too cocky. That’s why he ended up like this.
Seeing the notice from finance that half a month’s salary was gone felt worse than death!
’Damn it, the more I think about it, the more miserable I feel...’
After Gu Shengsheng contacted the workers and told them to come over and start, there was no need for her to wait around.
She decided to pack up and wander around the neighborhood.
"Collecting scrap!"
"One yuan for books you don’t need! Fifty cents for books taking up space! Five cents for books lined up to go!"
"Collecting scrap!"
Gu Shengsheng watched an old man on a tricycle meandering around the area.
The area was already sparsely populated, so his calls added a bit of life to the quiet atmosphere.
The tricycle was quite large and struggling to get up a slope, so the sharp-eyed Gu Shengsheng walked right over and helped him push.
She was already strong to begin with, and now she put a good deal of her strength into helping the old man.
Seeing Gu Shengsheng standing alone by the road, the old man smiled and said, "Young lady, you got any scrap to sell?"
Gu Shengsheng shook her head. "I don’t live around here."
"Then did you buy a new plot of land here?" he asked, noticing the papers in her hand and the fact that she was standing in front of a cluster of dilapidated houses.
"No one’s come to this place in ages! Didn’t you lose a lot of money buying it? It must have cost a pretty penny!"
"It did," she said with a lovely smile. "But I have a plan. I know what I’m doing."
The man wasn’t one to pry. He just said, "Thanks for helping me with the cart. I’m heading to the scrapyard anyway. Come with me, and I’ll treat you to some brown sugar water."
Things in the courtyard house districts were too expensive; he was usually very frugal.
"Anyway, I’m just making one more round before I head back to the scrapyard. Why don’t you follow me around for a bit? You look like you’re not from around here. How about this old man takes you for a spin on his tricycle?"
As he spoke, Gu Shengsheng looked at the contents of his cart, which were piled high. There were old appliances, scrap paper, plenty of still-usable enamel basins, and a ton of miscellaneous scrap metal.
She didn’t have anything else to do, so a trip to the scrapyard didn’t sound like a bad idea.
Besides, she wasn’t worried about the old man being a threat. After all, she could probably kill him with a single punch.
It was nothing special, just that she was incredibly strong. Plus, before she transmigrated, she was a taekwondo black belt.
Besides, the old man seemed genuinely sincere.
Even the owner of the *dòuzhīr* stall greeted him like an old friend.
Gu Shengsheng just looked at the tricycle, which had no place to put her feet. "So how am I supposed to sit?" she asked.
"You can just sit on top of all this good stuff!"
"Don’t just see it as a pile of junk. Some of this stuff, we can pick out and use ourselves. The rest I take to the scrapyard to sell."
"Kiddo, did you just move here? If you come along, you might find some things you can use for yourself."
He chuckled. "There are a lot of people who come to Beijing to make a living these days. Life is hard for everyone. You look like you could use some household supplies, all skinny like that. You can buy them cheap at the scrapyard."
"Okay!" Gu Shengsheng agreed with a smile.
’Maybe I can find some hidden treasures at the scrapyard?’
She had originally just gone along for the fun of it, treating it as a joyride on a tricycle.
The old man was a skilled tricycle driver, and many other old-timers driving "elderly cruisers" greeted him as they passed.
"Kiddo, how do you like my convertible?"
Gu Shengsheng laughed. "It’s very comfortable. Nice and breezy."
"Right? Those other old guys with their cruisers say they can use them to capture the hearts of the ladies from the square dancing group. I bet they’d find my convertible pretty special too."
"But when I make enough money from collecting scrap, I’ll buy one of those elderly cruisers. Then I’ll take you for a spin everywhere."
Gu Shengsheng nodded, finding it amusing.
You rarely saw these things in other cities, but for some reason, they were all over Beijing City, from the city center to the outskirts.
These old folks were living quite the life.
Gu Shengsheng was jostled around a few times as the old man drove, and the pile of scrap shifted closer and closer, practically walling her in.
Gu Shengsheng wasn’t livestreaming at the moment, but some of her fans happened to spot her and the old man waiting at a red light.
There she was, squatting in the middle of the tricycle, looking small, pitiful, and helpless, completely surrounded by scrap.
The fans who saw it absolutely lost it:
"Didn’t we tell our streamer to go treasure hunting in Pan Garden! Why is she heading to a scrapyard?"
"Fam, maybe the old man is giving her a lift to Pan Garden."
"Help, this is too funny! A streamer riding a scrap tricycle. But is that really her? The photo is a bit blurry."
"It’s gotta be her. That’s what she was wearing. Besides, who else is that good-looking and does something this ridiculous?"
Sure enough, everyone started camping out, waiting for her to go live.
Once they arrived at the scrapyard, Gu Shengsheng started her livestream.
She was a bit surprised. "Why are there so many people here right from the start today?"
The bullet comments were filled with fans laughing at her, talking about the scrapyard, and making memes out of the photo of her on the tricycle.
Gu Shengsheng sighed and put a hand to her forehead.
She said, "The uncle invited me here for some sugar water, so I thought I’d take you all on a tour of the scrapyard. It’s not like you’ve ever been here before, right?"
"Are you crazy, streamer? Hahahaha, what normal person goes to a scrapyard?"
"Exactly! We follow you to learn about cool stuff, right? I’m dying! That picture of you on the tricycle."
Gu Shengsheng said with a straight face, "The uncle is a very steady driver. The tricycle is a modified electric model, so it’s actually quite stable."
At this, the viewers’ laughter grew even louder.
Gu Shengsheng had only come here to try her luck, thinking she might be able to find a hidden gem.
While they were drinking the sugar water, the old man chuckled and asked, "So, what do you do for work? Why are you staring all around the scrapyard with such shifty eyes?"
If he didn’t know she could afford a courtyard house, he might have really thought she had some ill intentions toward his scrapyard.
Gu Shengsheng answered seriously, "You could call it antique appraisal and treasure hunting. It’s not really a job, just a hobby."
"Whoa, an appraiser! Your line of work is pretty amazing. The kind of money you can make in one go would be enough for me to live on for the rest of my life." The old man burst out laughing.
It was as if he was imagining himself making all that money.
