Chapter 35: Chapter 35: How Could You Get Pregnant Carrying Something Full of Yin Qi Every Day?

"When have you ever actually tried? You’re just placating an old woman, aren’t you?"

Mrs. Lu Sr. coughed. "Second Madam Lu, it’s not as if I’m forcing you to have a second child, am I? You’re the one who came to me, saying you would get shares for your child if you could have another one."

"You were the one who made that grand promise. I’m not some feudal relic who’s going to force you to give birth."

"Otherwise, the things I’m leaving for your child..." Mrs. Lu Sr. didn’t get to finish.

Second Madam Lu cut in immediately. "Mother! Please don’t. We still want another child. We want a second one. Chaoyang needs a little brother. We can do it, I promise. You can trust us."

"You’ve always wanted this yourself, so don’t go spreading nasty rumors. Even I didn’t know I was such a wicked mother-in-law," Mrs. Lu Sr. warned.

Second Madam Lu looked awkward. She didn’t dare breathe a word in response to Mrs. Lu Sr.’s statements. Her expression just grew more deferential as she apologized.

So, she turned and took her frustration out on Gu Shengsheng, which made her feel a little better.

Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

"Miss Gu, if you have a problem with me, just say so. Our elders are listening, you know?"

"I thought you went to Pan Garden to appraise antiques. I had no idea Miss Gu was a jack-of-all-trades. Now you’re going to treat my infertility, too?"

Gu Shengsheng smiled. "If it were truly a matter of infertility, it would be quite treatable if you just trusted in medical science."

As she spoke, her gaze fell upon the sapphire pendant around Second Madam Lu’s neck. It looked like an antique with a long history, though the cord it hung from was clearly a modern addition.

Gu Shengsheng had seen many people wear items that had belonged to the dead.

Many such artifacts were harmless. Some even carried a poignant love story.

But in Second Madam Lu’s case, that was far from the truth.

"The sapphire pendant you’re wearing, Second Madam Lu, isn’t that a burial good from Emperor Guangxu’s entombment? It’s certainly exquisite, and quite famous."

Most people wouldn’t recognize the pendant’s fame, so every time Second Madam Lu showed it off, she had to explain its history.

She was intrigued that Gu Shengsheng could identify the piece so effortlessly.

"It seems your little swindling act has some substance after all. You’ve got a decent eye. I’ll give you that; at least you know what you’re looking at."

She took it off and dangled it, just as she was about to get smug.

But Gu Shengsheng snatched it from her and smashed it on the ground.

Second Madam Lu was shocked and a little stunned. "What are you doing!"

"While this is from the Guangxu Period, as far as I know, the tomb was excavated in the late Qing Dynasty. Many people wore this during the Republic era that followed."

"From what I can tell, you only acquired this piece this year, didn’t you? It’s completely unwearable—the deathly aura is practically overflowing! More importantly, the resentment clinging to it is so strong. You cradle it like a treasure every day. Second Madam Lu, you don’t have nightmares?"

Gu Shengsheng’s eyes were filled with such gravity as she spoke that Second Madam Lu was too frightened to utter a single word in rebuttal.

Normally, she would have just called Gu Shengsheng a "little bitch."

At this, Second Madam Lu frowned. "Gu Shengsheng, stop talking nonsense!"

"How is this nonsense?" Gu Shengsheng pointed to the fragments on the floor. "You’re the one who promised Grandma that you wanted another child. How could you possibly conceive when you treasure such a ghoulishly cold item every day?"

"Besides, this thing will bring bad luck to the family. Destroying it early is for the best."

"Of course, believe it or not."

With that, Gu Shengsheng picked up the pieces and placed them in her hand. But Second Madam Lu was trembling all over, overcome with fear.

A fear that chilled her to the bone.

’Her mother had bought it for her, claiming she got it from an old farmer. She had no idea if it was stolen from a tomb.’

’The origins of these things were always a mystery. She’d just had an expert confirm it was valuable; how was she supposed to know whether it was safe to wear!’

’The more she thought about it, the more horrified she became.’

Mrs. Lu Sr. pulled Shengsheng close. "Good girl. I knew you were capable."

"That’s enough, Second Madam Lu. You’re the one who promised me a child for shares, and now you’re the one who refuses to trust anyone. Your family is just trying to help you with a kind heart, so why are you acting this way? Your son is a CEO, for goodness’ sake. Acting like this is a disgrace!"

With that, Mrs. Lu Sr. pulled Shengsheng along and headed upstairs.

When Gu Shengsheng reached her room and was about to go inside, Mrs. Lu Sr. held her back. "Hey! You silly girl, you were so chummy with me downstairs. Why are you trying to part ways with Grandma the moment we get upstairs?"

She sounded a little unhappy.

Gu Shengsheng was speechless for a moment. "...I thought you were just helping me out, Grandma. Playing along for the sake of the situation."

"Nonsense! Grandma just genuinely likes you, you know? A great mystic came to me in a dream and said that if you and that boy Shi Jing get married, things will keep getting better and better for the both of you."

Gu Shengsheng’s lips twitched. "You didn’t go to a fortune teller to have our compatibility charts read, did you?"

"I did! It was fortune-telling, hahaha! It’s just like your antique appraising—it all seems so mysterious. It’s all the great masters guiding us mortals!"

Listening to Grandma’s flaky talk, her eyes darting about in excitement.

Gu Shengsheng found her quite adorable.

"Where are you taking me, Grandma?" Gu Shengsheng asked.

After Mrs. Lu Sr. led Gu Shengsheng into her bedroom, she immediately asked for help, wanting her to check if anything she was wearing was inappropriate, like what her second daughter-in-law had on. If so, she wanted to change immediately.

Gu Shengsheng checked her pearl necklace, custom-made earrings, and elegant outfit, but found no issues.

Mrs. Lu Sr. nodded. "Good. Thankfully, I’m not like that troublemaking daughter-in-law of mine. As long as my clothes aren’t from the underworld, I’m fine."

"My dear girl, Grandma helped you out today, didn’t I? So shouldn’t you repay me?"

"Yes." Then Gu Shengsheng thought for a moment, felt that wasn’t the right answer, and added, "No."

"Then can Grandma go with you to appraise antiques? Your job seems so interesting. This old lady will just watch from the side, I promise."

"I’m just curious how you figure those things out. At my age, I love new and exciting things."

Seeing that Gu Shengsheng still seemed reluctant to take her,

Grandma plopped down on a stool and started to cry. "Look at my life! My eldest grandson is dead, that girl Linnin is completely unreliable and didn’t even come home for dinner. The only one left is Chaoyang, and he’s been led astray—who knows when he’s hoping I’ll finally kick the bucket..."

"Now, I only have you left." As she said this, tears began to stream down her face.

"I’m not trying to complain, but I’m just telling you, Shengsheng, Grandma has had a really hard life. At my age, I finally find a little hobby, and you’re willing to show it to all those strangers on your livestream, but you won’t let me watch!"

She pouted, on the verge of wailing.

’She really did have a point.’

Gu Shengsheng felt a bit helpless. Her heart softened, and she nodded. "Alright. But you have to stick close to me, Grandma."

"Wonderful, wonderful!" Mrs. Lu Sr.’s melancholic expression vanished in an instant.

The old woman who, just a moment ago, had been frail, miserable, and practically "unable to go on," was now already in her walk-in closet, picking out an outfit for their outing tomorrow.

"..." Gu Shengsheng was speechless.

"Shengsheng, I won’t appear on camera tomorrow. How about I hold your phone and be your camerawoman?"

"Oh, and you have to teach me how to join your fan club next time. I need to be able to get things done in there!"

"Shengsheng, what do you say? Tomorrow, the two of us, one old and one young, will take Pan Garden by storm!"
