Chapter 24: Chapter 24: It’s Everyone’s First Time Being Human, Why Should I Yield to You?
In the three years since her husband lost power and her son went missing,
Zhao Fenghua had endured no shortage of ridicule. She could feel it, both overtly and subtly—many people were now looking to the second branch of the family for their cues.
Sizing up the situation was, after all, only human nature.
But now, being judged based on this daughter-in-law, she couldn’t help but feel displeased.
’Why am I being criticized because of a junior?’ Besides, she had never thought much of this daughter-in-law.
But even if she didn’t approve, she would still afford her the proper dignity.
On that note, her son, Shi Jing, had never been interested in women. If he really came back alive and found he had a wife, what a disaster that would be!
But she was just a wife, the wife of the eldest son.
Mrs. Lu Sr. was a woman who acted without any discernible pattern; you never knew what she would do next.
However, her judgment was indeed excellent. At least, that was what Madam Lu, Zhao Fenghua, believed.
So, she had reluctantly accepted the matter of Gu Shengsheng.
Madam Lu looked at the gossiping crowd and said coolly, "I may not be pleased, but it’s not your place to teach me how to conduct my affairs."
"The main branch of the Lu Family has had a setback, but we are not gone. Although Shengsheng was married in to ward off bad luck, she is still a member of the main branch of my Lu Family."
Her cold expression was enough to frighten them into silence.
This Madam Lu’s temper truly was as foul as it was unyielding.

On Gu Shengsheng’s side, she didn’t know a single person and thought she would either be left in peace or have a few people come over to criticize her.
But neither happened. Instead, she found a young girl with a round face cupping her cheeks as she watched her eat the refreshments.
Gu Shengsheng had been eating quite a bit, but now she slowed down to be a little more graceful.
She asked, "Can I help you?"
The girl propped her chin on her hands and looked Gu Shengsheng up and down. "Sister-in-law, you’re so pretty."
’Thinking of the Lu Family members... could this be Lu Shijing’s biological sister, Lu Linlin?’ It seemed likely.
Before Gu Shengsheng could ask, the girl spoke first. "If you went with me to a nightclub to find male models, you’d be such a showstopper. All the hot ones would probably throw themselves at you."
"..." Gu Shengsheng nearly spat out the champagne she had just swallowed. ’What in the world is this nonsense...’
’This Lu Linlin is so forward?’
It turned out Gu Shengsheng was the conservative one. Who knew the next words would be even more outrageous? "Why are you so surprised, Sister-in-law? Who knows if my brother is even coming back? No one’s here to control you."
"My brother is super rigid. It’d be so much fun if you went out with me every day. We could order a few male models and enjoy the feeling of being surrounded."
"Everyone on my social media feed would be so jealous, but my mom never lets me go out."
Many of the other rich daughters said Gu Shengsheng was just a good-luck bride and didn’t deserve to be her sister-in-law. But she felt that everyone was the same; you couldn’t look down on your sister-in-law just because of her past.
Since she had come to the Lu Family, and for the purpose of bringing her brother good luck, she was, for all intents and purposes, married in.
More importantly, Gu Shengsheng was gorgeous, and just looking at her was a delight.
As the two were chatting, a woman in a sexy green dress appeared in front of Lu Linlin. Her face was flushed, and she looked drunk.
She sized up Gu Shengsheng.
"So this is the one the Lu Family brought in to ward off bad luck? How ridiculous."
Lu Linlin stepped in front of Gu Shengsheng and whispered, "Sister-in-law, this is the woman who was after my brother three years ago. Her name is Jiang Xinyi. She’s been desperately in love with him for over ten years, but my brother likes men, so he was completely unmoved."
Gu Shengsheng: ??? ’Holy crap, that’s explosive.’
"Your brother is dead, so is she still trying to marry him now?" Gu Shengsheng was puzzled. As a curious onlooker, she was extremely interested in this kind of drama.
"Totally! She was dying to be the one to marry in for good luck, but Grandma said her birth chart wasn’t compatible. She said she had to find my brother’s fated person, and then somehow, she settled on the Gu family."
"I don’t really get the specifics, though. The things Grandma does... her methods are too wild. I can’t make sense of them at all."
Lu Linlin had always been well aware of her own intellectual limits. She was already pretty dumb, so being a good-for-nothing rich girl was fine by her; she never had to use her brain.
She swallowed and continued, "Anyway, Sister-in-law, now that she sees you married to my brother, she’s probably furious enough to eat you alive."
"Sister-in-law, you’re my sister-in-law. Grandma acknowledges you, and I acknowledge you too."
Jiang Xinyi crossed her arms. "Lu Linlin, you’re shielding her? You know, I grew up with you! You, me, and your brother—we all grew up together!"
Seeing the woman’s crazed state, Gu Shengsheng found it rather pathetic. She really did want to marry that dead husband of hers.
It was a kind of devotion she found hard to understand.
Still, she pulled Lu Linlin behind her and said, "Don’t worry, your sister-in-law can handle this."
"Miss Jiang, is there something you wish to say?" As Gu Shengsheng spoke, Jiang Xinyi staggered toward her.
"You’re a real bitch, aren’t you, Miss Gu? Getting into the Lu Family must have taken everything you had." Her eyes were filled with scorn. "Do you feel so great now? A high-society lady like me, who wanted nothing in return, and still the Lu Family wouldn’t choose me."
"They chose only you? On what grounds?" She pointed at Gu Shengsheng. "How are you better than me? I’ve loved him for ten years! Ten years!"
With that, she ripped the Chinese-style hairpin from her hair and threw it at Gu Shengsheng’s face.
"Do you know what! A single one of my hair accessories costs more than you could ever make in your entire life!"
Then she took off her high heels, bracelet, and necklace, throwing them all at Gu Shengsheng. "Do you have any idea how much this stuff costs? Can you even recognize quality? You bitch who did nothing and still managed to steal everything from me."
Gu Shengsheng could feel the pure hatred in her eyes directed entirely at her.
But was she, Gu Shengsheng, a pushover?
Gu Shengsheng slapped her across the face, stunning Jiang Xinyi.
"If you’re going to have a drunken fit, don’t take it out on me."
"The man’s dead and he *still* didn’t choose you, so why are you still forcing yourself on him? You’re blaming me, the good-luck bride, for your own incompetence."
As she spoke, Gu Shengsheng delivered another slap. Jiang Xinyi tried to fight back, but Gu Shengsheng grabbed her by the wrist.
"There, now both sides are even, Miss Jiang. Making you symmetrically beautiful. Aren’t I thoughtful?"
"Gu Shengsheng! You country bumpkin, you dare hit me? Your sister has to work under me to survive!"
"Oh," Gu Shengsheng said nonchalantly. "But now, I represent the Lu Family! Hitting me is the same as slapping the Lu Family in the face."
Lu Linlin’s eyes lit up as she watched Gu Shengsheng. ’Holy crap! I love you even more, Sister-in-law.’
Gu Shengsheng continued, "Jiang Xinyi, you said you loved him for ten years. I was originally going to respect you for being such a stand-up person. But looking at you now, I just find you pathetic."
"Just because you love someone, you think you have the right to guilt-trip everyone? We’re all living life for the first time, why the hell should I give way to you?"
"A brain like yours, filled with nothing but shit and slop... I think it needs a toilet installed!"
