Chapter 13: Unholy Rampage
Vael, now wearing Langer’s face, rushed out of the chamber and into the hallway. He was now in clothes similar to Langer’s from moments ago.
He ran toward yellow, his voice shaking with visible fright. "Yellow, pull yourself together!"
He held her arms and shook her, making her regain her composure. "I—I—I don’t know what happened to him."
"I know," Vael, as Langer, said instantly. "I need you to listen to me. We aren’t safe."
"Huh? What do you mean by that?" Yellow replied, catching her breath.
"I mean Lady Valerie has gone on a rampage. I need you to go to Lord Valak and tell him—it was Lady Valerie all along, and Lord Vael is dead. Tell him she intends to kill every demon in the castle, and she is headed west. Lord Valak is at the eastward archives. Find him. Do you hear me!" His voice was clear and audible. She nodded immediately before finally regaining herself. Without hesitation, she headed to the eastward archives.
As soon as she disappeared from sight, Vael walked to the balcony and watched from there. Cronos sat on a small tent in the garden, his back facing him.
Vael smiled as he walked back into his room. He went to his closet and picked out an outfit that was an exact match of Cronos’s outfit that day—every single detail.
Then he wore it and stood by the mirror, wearing a smug look on his face. In that instant, his face shifted into Valak’s face, and Vael walked out, heading to the west where the demon army resided.
---
Yellow soon found Valak in the eastward archives. He had begun sorting out some files, as he had already murdered Valin, his assistant.
Yellow barged in, breathing heavily.
"Lord Valak, I have a message for you."
"Speak," he said without lifting his head as he wrote.
"Lord Vael is dead, and Lady Valerie is on a rampage, killing demons. She is headed west. It was Lady Valerie all along," Yellow replied with a shaky voice.
Valak’s hands stopped as he looked at her. "Did you claim Lady Valerie is responsible for everything?"
"Yes, Lord Valak."
Valak stood up from his chair and walked toward her. His expression was now serious. Yellow took a step back in fear as he approached her.
His voice dropped an octave lower. "I’ll ask again, and you will tell the truth."
Immediately the words left his mouth, the tension vanished from Yellow’s shoulders. She stood still as though lost in thought. Then Valak asked again:
"Did you see Vael’s dead body?"
"Yes," she muttered.
"Did you see Valerie rampaging?"
"She ran out of Lord Vael’s chamber and drew her blades. She also ordered Langer to hide Lord Vael’s body and clean up his blood."
Valak’s eyes opened in shock. His Authority of Truth couldn’t lie, but even with that, he was finding it difficult to believe it. Then he recalled her question from earlier that day:
"Do you have any plans I don’t know of, brother?"
"You sent Dreece away. Why did you send her back to the human realm?"
No. It can’t be. Was she asking because she wanted them dead too?
Valak placed his hands under his chin as he thought. He had never used his Authority of Truth on Valerie, as their relationship was strictly held by mutual respect. And now, he felt like it was going to cost him more than he knew.
Why would I make an exception? Why did I assume she couldn’t do it?
He looked back at Yellow and asked again: "Did you come on your own accord, or did someone tell you to?"
"I was sent by Langer the butler, and he was covered in Lord Vael’s blood," Yellow replied. Suddenly, the tension returned, and she looked at him in fear.
"You may leave." Valak’s voice was cold. Yellow didn’t wait any longer—she hurried out and headed back to Vael’s chamber.
Valak looked at the door, his face a layer of controlled rage. He turned and headed to the west as he muttered silently to no one:
"I’ll kill you, Valerie."
---
Meanwhile, Vael—still wearing Valak’s face—had already reached the west. He gathered the army of demons—over two hundred of them—as he stood on a podium and began his speech.
"Listen up. I have seen you all slack off in your recent training, and I find it really disappointing for elite demons." He paused, letting it settle in, then continued:
"Now, I want to see how you would survive against a truly powerful opponent. So with that, I have come up with a new mission."
He took a step forward, and a subtle smile appeared on his face. "Whoever survives this mission will be given the title of an elite demon. You will be seen as worthy of this faction."
The legion of demons remained silent, listening to him.
"Your mission is to survive Lady Valerie."
There was a loud gasp from the army. The second oldest demon heir was no pushover—even in their numbers, it wouldn’t be an easy win. Even a hard win was still near impossible.
He looked at them with a serious expression. "If you can’t prove yourselves, then I’ll just kill you all now. Any objections?"
The army remained silent for a moment. Then, one by one, they began to bow. It didn’t take long before all bowed to him. Vael smiled as he muttered: "Now go—she is in the south."
The army immediately launched south in unison, while Vael—still with Valak’s face—followed slowly behind. Every step took its time.
---
By the time he arrived at the south, Valerie had slaughtered all two hundred demons, panting in obvious rage. She held one head in her hand and her right foot on a body.
A gruesome mound of dismembered demon corpses choked the field, each carcass mangled beyond recognition. Dripping with their dark blood, she stood motionless in the center of the devastation.
"I’ll kill you, Valak!" She screamed out, not noticing the person behind her.
In that moment, Vael shifted his hair back to black while still wearing Valak’s face. He lifted his hands toward her and then used the skill Devour, aiming for her right foot. It was amped by his own magic, and it took off Valerie’s right foot—knee downwards.
She gasped. Only then did she turn around and look. Behind her was a face she recognized as Valak’s—except the hair color was now black.
"You—"
She said, but paused, trying to fully understand why Valak would change his white hair to black.
Vael, still looking like Valak, smiled—a bright, warm smile—as he asked:
"Hello, sister. What do you think of my look? Don’t I look just like Father?"
