Chapter 24: Chapter 23: Lifelong Honorary Professor
But they were to be disappointed. The Lowells’ faces showed only affection, joy, and happiness—not a trace of jealousy or anger. If this was all an act, then the entire Lowell family deserved to be in showbiz.
"This decision, well, we actually made it right after she was born. We originally planned to give it to her as a gift for her coming-of-age ceremony. It’s a year late now, but better late than never. My granddaughter has been out on her own for so many years and has built her own career, which is doing quite well. But what I want to tell her is that she will always be a Lowell. The Lowell family will always have her back, and all of this is what she deserves." As he spoke, Grandpa Lowell affectionately made a gesture as if to pat her head.
"And now, I hope everyone will enjoy the banquet. Please forgive us for any shortcomings in our hospitality."
The moment they stepped off the stage, the four members of the Grant family approached them.
Old Master Grant stepped forward, clapping Grandpa Lowell’s shoulder like an old friend before turning to smile at Yvonne Lowell. "Our little Nana has grown more and more beautiful. You looked like a little cherub when you were a child. My surname is Grant. You used to call me Grandpa Grant. This is your Uncle Grant and Auntie Ford."
"Hello, Grandpa Grant. Hello, Uncle Grant and Auntie Ford." Yvonne Lowell smiled and greeted them, pointedly ignoring Leo Grant, who was standing to the side.
Mrs. Grant’s face bloomed into a smile as she took Yvonne’s hand. "Oh, you good child. You’re just so lovely and fresh."
Grandma Lowell gently poked Yvonne’s forehead with her index finger. "And what about Auntie Ford’s son? He’s a bit older than you, so you should call him Leo."
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow and complied with a smile. "Hello, Leo."
"Hello there, Little Sister Yvonne~" Leo Grant deliberately emphasized the last three words, his tone laced with a teasing tenderness.
The three other Grants exchanged a knowing glance and smiled.
Mrs. Grant even suggested, "You young people have your own things to talk about. Go on and have some fun together."
Grandpa Lowell sensed something wasn’t quite right and was about to intervene, but Old Master Grant stopped him. "Old Man Lowell, let’s go find Old Man Sutton and the others for a chat. That whole gang of old-timers showed up today."
"Let’s go, Little Sister Yvonne." Leo Grant lowered his gaze to the young woman beside him.
Yvonne Lowell glanced to the side, a smirk playing on her lips. "Afraid that’s not going to happen, Gorgeous."
Leo Grant followed her gaze and saw them: the Lowell-Sutton Seven, marching toward them with murderous intent.
’Crap, I miscalculated,’ he thought. ’Forgot about these roadblocks!’
Caleb Lowell came to Yvonne Lowell’s side, holding a glass of orange juice. "Nanny Warren prepared this. It’s the same brand you put in the fridge the other day. She was worried you wouldn’t like the other drinks."
"Thank you, Big Brother. And please thank Nanny Warren for me." Yvonne Lowell took the orange juice and took a sip, her face a picture of contentment.
Only after she had the glass did Caleb turn to Leo Grant. "Aren’t you busy, Leo? How is it you have time to be here today?"
"It’s Yvonne’s welcome-home banquet. On such an important occasion, I had to be here, of course." Leo Grant’s expression remained unchanged as he nonchalantly sipped his red wine.
Nolan Crawford, who had brought his younger brother over to watch the spectacle, couldn’t help but cringe. ’Dude,’ he thought, ’could your skin get any thicker?!’
The Lowell-Sutton Seven all figured out what was going on and watched Leo Grant with wary eyes.
Penelope Lynch, who was standing nearby, couldn’t wait any longer. She had been away on a business trip and had only returned to Aurelia yesterday, so she had missed the viral photos online.
She had come to the welcome-home banquet for the eldest Miss Lowell mainly to show respect to the Lowell Family, as the young lady’s name had not been circulated publicly.
She never imagined that this eldest Miss Lowell was the respected mentor and savior she had been hoping to find for two years.
Yvonne Lowell... Lowell...!
Penelope Lynch strode forward. "Professor Lowell! It’s been so long. I’m so happy to see you again!"
The Lowell-Sutton Seven, who had been spoiling for a one-sided fight just moments before, all froze. ’Lo-what? What Professor? Wait... did she say *Confessor*? What is anyone confessing?!’
Only Leo Grant seemed to understand. He glanced at the dazed young woman beside him. ’She’s a professor? And she taught my cousin, who’s a few months older than me?’
Yvonne Lowell stared at the person before her, unable to place her. "I’m sorry, you are...?"
"I’m Penelope Lynch! I was fortunate enough to get into your class for a semester at Loster Academy. You also saved me once when I was in danger off campus," Penelope Lynch answered quickly.
Yvonne Lowell’s mind raced, and then it clicked. Two years ago, she’d been tricked by that white-bearded old man on the faculty committee into teaching for a whole semester.
There had been an Aurelian girl in her class who sat in the front row for every single lecture and always had the highest GPA.
One time, outside a small pub off campus, she’d run into the girl getting mugged. She’d gotten the bag back for her and beaten the robber up.
"Oh, it’s you," Yvonne Lowell said with a smile. "I didn’t expect we’d meet again."
Penelope Lynch’s eyes lit up with joy. "I graduated last year! I’m managing my family’s company now."
"Wait, wait, wait—what professor? Nola, why didn’t you tell us?" Harrison Lowell interjected, his face a mask of utter confusion.
Penelope Lynch was shocked. The Lowells didn’t know? She shot a questioning glance at Yvonne Lowell, who nodded. Penelope then began to explain.
"Professor Lowell spent three years at Loster Academy, earning her doctorate at just sixteen years old. She also became one of only two lifetime honorary professors at the academy. If you don’t believe me, you can check the official website. There’s no photo, but her name and age are listed."
Yvonne Lowell shrugged. "Yeah, that’s pretty much it. I didn’t mention it because I didn’t think it was necessary. It’s not a big deal or anything."
Her brothers were all stunned. ’Aren’t you being a little too casual about this?!’
Once they snapped out of it, they showered her with praise. "Nola is amazing!" "Our sister is incredible!"
The other guests, who were pretending to chat among themselves, had in fact been focused on the group the entire time. Upon hearing this exchange, they were all left speechless.
Some people immediately pulled out their phones and went to the Loster Academy website. Sure enough, in the section for lifetime honorary professors, they found the entry: ’Yvonne Lowell, 19.’
Penelope Lynch was the only person in Kingsland’s high society circles who had actually attended Loster Academy. The fact that she had greatly expanded the Forrest Company after graduating was a story many people admired. Oh, right, First Young Master Grant had gotten in as well, but he chose not to go.
’But now you’re telling us she’s a Ph.D. at sixteen and a lifetime honorary professor? This is Loster Academy we’re talking about! The top university in the world! Do you have to be such a humblebragger?! And that’s ’not a big deal’?!’
’And you brothers, are you not even a little surprised? Just going to praise her blindly?! This level of sister-complex is terrifying!’
When the news reached the ears of the elders, they were momentarily stunned, but they quickly recovered, their eyes filled with immense pride.
Just then, Old Butler Sterling walked to Grandpa Lowell’s side and whispered something in his ear.
The old man’s expression suddenly turned strange. His old friends saw that something was amiss and were about to ask, but he had already stood up. "You all continue chatting. Something has come up, so please excuse me."
No one pried. Old Master Grant simply said, "If it’s something you can’t handle, just say the word."
Grandpa Lowell waved a hand dismissively and walked toward the entrance.
At that same moment, a middle-aged man walked in, supporting an elderly man in his seventies.
