Chapter 29: D-Rank Beast: A Treasure
’There are too many of them.’ He gripped the dagger tightly and motioned for Scarlett to hide.
His eyes flashed with power, and he leaped toward the rabbits, avoiding the rats at all costs!
Even with his current strength, fighting 25 F-Rank beasts at the same time would cause him enormous problems, and considering that they were poisonous beasts, losing was all too easy.
With a horizontal swing, he took two of them down, slashing open their chests.
Next, Zaid activated his ability.
[Dagger Mastery]
He then unleashed a series of powerful and precise attacks that slit the throats of the two rabbits with ease.
The realization that he had killed two poisonous rabbits made him happy, but that happiness was short-lived.
In addition to their venom, the most dangerous thing about these foul beasts is their claws or fangs; for a low-level hunter, they’re deadly—especially for him, who’s barely Level 3.
The rats were roughly at that level, while the Rabbits were at Level 5. The Rabbits already had 25 stat points in total—more than he did!
Zaid sensed danger approaching from behind and was forced to turn around; before he could do so, he suffered several lacerations from the rabbit’s claws.
’I have to keep them from biting me...’ Zaid wasn’t worried about the claw wounds, because they were only painful, not paralyzing.
He took a step back and nimbly dodged one of the rabbits that leaped at his face.
CLANK!
CLANK!
Two attacks struck his dagger and pushed him back a meter, but the rabbit’s claws fell to the ground; they had been sliced in half, forcing him to lose that brief skirmish.
However, Zaid was caught off guard. From where he was, he couldn’t attack again because he was too far from the rabbit.
He had to look down to find one of those rats, but there were too many of them, and one was already close to him.
It bit down hard on his right leg... the poison spread through the bite.
"Shit." Zaid wanted to attack it to shake it off, but suddenly he felt a chill coming from above.
Acting on instinct and his Keen Senses, he decided to ignore the rat and swung his dagger upward to defend himself.
CLANK!
The impact was deafening, and Zaid was sent flying backward at great speed.
When he finally got a clear look at his enemy, his eyes widened in shock.
A cat—it really was a cat!
And one with wings!
[Spiritual Winged Cat: Approximate Rank: ~D.]
Its appearance wasn’t very recognizable. Yes, it was a cat with wings—that’s easy to spot.
But it was ethereal, a little transparent!
’What the heck is that thing? I’ve never seen a beast like that before.’ Zaid shook himself and came to a stop thanks to the tree roots, which had caused him to fall.
When he stood up... he was even more bewildered.
That cat wasn’t attacking him; it had simply started fighting the rats and... it was eating them!
"Gio, jump over here—don’t mess with that thing!" Scarlett shouted from behind one of the nearby trees.
Zaid did as he was told. If that bastard ate the rabbits, it would be a disaster, but it was better to keep looking for rabbits than to get into a fight with that thing.
When he reached Scarlett, she was preparing several poisons and made him take an antidote. "Take this."
Then she put more potions in her clothes, as if she were getting ready for battle.
"What are you doing?" Zaid looked at her, puzzled.
"What do you mean, what am I doing? I’m getting ready to fight, obviously!" she said, and poured another potion into Zaid’s mouth. "It’s a healing potion; it’ll help you."
"Fight? Against that thing?"
She stopped getting ready and stared at him. "Don’t you know what it is?"
"I have no idea."
"It’s a treasure!" she exclaimed immediately. "A priceless one—we have to grab it!"
"A treasure?" Zaid turned to the other side of the tree and watched the cat battling the rats scurrying in panic and the mice trying to return to their burrows. To call it a battle was an insult.
That was a massacre!
"How is that a treasure? It’s a mortal danger!" he exclaimed.
Scarlett agreed with him. "But it’s still a treasure. Have you ever heard of the Spirit Tamer?"
Zaid glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. "The third of the three legendary groups. First come the Mages or Sorcerers. Then the Alchemists. Finally, the Spirit Tamer. It’s said that the latter are older than the first two."
"You know it!" She nodded happily. "That thing over there is one of the spirits that a Spirit Tamer can tame. It’s no use to me because spirits don’t get along with alchemists, but you’re a hunter. You’ll be glad you have it once you do."
’I see. That’s why its name says it’s a spirit...’
He was thrilled. Of course, he knew what a treasure it was. As she had said, it was a priceless treasure. He would hardly ever find another one in his lifetime.
Zaid frowned. "I hadn’t realized you were such a kind person."
She smiled and touched her ring. "This is pretty heavy. You’ve already gotten me all the materials I need for the month and sold them to me at a low price... I think I should pay you well."
She looked past the tree. "And look how many there are over there... If just helping you get something that good is enough to pay for all those materials, I’m willing to take the risk."
Although the real reason was that she was itching to fight. She had always longed to go on adventures, but since she wasn’t a hunter, she couldn’t. This was a good excuse to give it a try!
"But you’ll have to be careful. It’s powerful, and the Winged Cats have many strange abilities. And no matter what happens, never let yourself be fooled by what you see. That’s what my master always said."
