Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Not a Wasted Trip
The group had just stepped out of the villa’s main gate.
"Where are you going?! Don’t you dare leave!" Yolanda Kramer’s shrill voice rang out again.
Hearing this, Luna Dawson folded her arms and silently stared at the person before her.
’Looks like...’
’She hasn’t had enough of a beating yet?’
"Thank you... thank you, everyone... Please, I’m begging you, don’t go. We’re so scared..." Shay Kramer said through sobs, her voice trembling as her eyes darted between them.
Luna Dawson’s words were barbed. "And if I say no?"
"You!" Yolanda Kramer’s eyes were red with frustration as she spoke in a rapid-fire burst. "You’re all so capable! If you’re going to save us, you should see it through to the end! How can you just abandon two young girls like us?!"
She glared at Luna Dawson, her logic completely twisted. "You’re the one who killed and beat people, so you have to take responsibility!"
Miles Dawson was getting a headache listening to this and couldn’t stop himself from retorting, "People? That *thing* from before? Why don’t you go claim it as kin and have a little family reunion?"
"You killed my parents! It’s all your fault!" Yolanda Kramer broke down completely, roaring through her tears. "Yes! It’s all your fault!"
The group exchanged glances.
’Great. Now she’s just blatantly trying to pin this on them.’
Shay Kramer was also crying so hard she could barely breathe. "Please, just stay with us. We’re neighbors... If it comes to it, we’ll give you our company later. Isn’t that enough?"
Luna Dawson let out a faint, disdainful laugh. "A company? What damn good is that in the apocalypse? Can you eat it? Can you use it to kill zombies? Let’s go!"
She shot the others a look, and the group continued toward the garden gate.
Seeing them actually leave, Yolanda Kramer flew into a hysterical rage. "You’re abandoning me! I hope your entire family dies a horrible death!"
At those words, Luna Dawson whipped around and slapped her hard across the face.
’Did she grow up on pig slop?!’
’She’s asking for it!’
"SPIT!"
Yolanda Kramer spat out a mouthful of thick, fresh blood. Two of her teeth flew out and clattered to the ground, and she twitched all over from the pain.
But it wasn’t over. Luna Dawson’s hand shot out, clamping around Yolanda Kramer’s throat and slamming her hard against the door.
"What did you say!?" Her voice was as cold as ice. "You dare curse my family? You must have a death wish!"
As she spoke, the pressure from her hand slowly increased.
Yolanda Kramer’s breath was instantly cut off. Her eyes widened in terror, and her hands clawed frantically at Luna Dawson’s arm. Her fingernails scraped red marks onto Luna’s exposed wrist, but she couldn’t move it in the slightest.
Her face went from deathly pale to a deep bluish-purple, finally settling on an eerie, dark violet. Veins bulged on her forehead, her eyes rolled back into her head, and all she could manage were desperate, hissing gasps.
The next moment, a warm liquid trickled from between Yolanda Kramer’s legs, dripping down the door and onto the ground. The sharp, foul stench of urine slowly filled the air.
Luna Dawson’s brow furrowed, and she abruptly released her grip.
Like a boneless heap, Yolanda Kramer slid down the door to the floor, snot and tears streaming down her face.
She clutched her neck, coughing violently. Her body trembled uncontrollably as she gasped for fresh air, hoarse whimpers escaping her throat.
’Now she truly understood her mistake!’
’Luna Dawson would have actually killed her!’
"Please! Please! I’m sorry... I was wrong!"
The words came out in a lisp, but she didn’t dare hesitate for a second, begging for her life.
Luna Dawson’s tone was ice-cold. "Next time you run that mouth of yours, think about whether you can live with the consequences."
Shay Kramer, her face pale with fright, scrambled over to hug Yolanda Kramer. Her voice trembled uncontrollably. "It’s our fault! We shouldn’t have pushed our luck! Please, don’t kill her..."
Luna Dawson ignored them and said, "Brother Evan, take my mom and the others to the car."
Evan Olson nodded, and they left the courtyard.
Luna Dawson turned and walked back into the villa. ’Can’t have a guest leave empty-handed.’ She headed straight downstairs for supplies.
The stock in the several-hundred-square-meter cold storage on the B2 level, the contents of the supply room on the B1 level—she took every last bit of it. Not even a crumb was left behind.
She walked back to the two sisters, looking down at them with an impassive expression. "This is the price for running your mouth. As for your parents’ supplies, I’ll be taking them."
’People don’t learn from words. Only harsh lessons are carved into your bones.’
Luna Dawson averted her gaze, not sparing them another glance. She turned and strode away, leaving behind a room thick with fear and a lingering, foul stench.
On the way back, whenever they came across a few scattered zombies, they stopped the car and got out to practice their combat skills.
They returned to their villa around dusk. The moment they walked through the door, the rich aroma of braised beef washed over them.
Grandpa looked in astonishment at the group, who were covered in blood and grime. He hurried over, concerned. "How did it go? Is everyone all right?"
Miles Dawson pouted. "We’re fine, Grandpa. But no good deed goes unpunished! We helped them kill zombies, and in return, they cursed our whole family to die a horrible death!"
After complaining, Miles Dawson started showing off again. "Grandpa, you have no idea! I was amazing at killing zombies! I’ll show you next time!"
Evan Olson reassured him, "Don’t worry, Grandpa. We’re all fine. We’re just going to go wash up."
A short while later, they sat down at the dining table, clean and refreshed.
Rhonda Dawson said, "I’m not much of a cook. I just made some braised beef and tomato beef brisket, and boiled some noodles. So, noodles for dinner, I guess."
"Sounds good. I could eat anything, I’m starving."
After speaking, Luna Dawson picked up her noodles and began eating with loud slurps.
The ones who had gone out all stared at the bright red tomato beef brisket with indescribable expressions.
Miles Dawson, Wayne Dawson, and Mrs. Dawson tried to hold it in for a few minutes, but they couldn’t stand it any longer and ran to the bathroom to throw up.
Rhonda Dawson looked toward the bathroom, a little hurt. "...It’s not so bad you have to puke at the mere sight of it, is it?"
Evan Olson took a sip of spirit spring water to calm himself. "Yeah, they just don’t have much of an appetite. They’ll be fine in a couple of days."
After they had eaten their fill, the two of them rested for a bit before heading to the neighboring villa to check on the others.
After changing their cooling patches, they used a syringe to feed each of them a glucose solution mixed with a little spirit spring water.
’Awakening a superpower can knock you out for a few days. I’m honestly worried they might starve to death.’
Luna Dawson checked on the unconscious Hector and the two little ones, then used the syringe to give each of them a tube of spirit spring water. After giving Evan Olson a few instructions, she went upstairs to bed.
Lying in her familiar bed, wrapped in her favorite lightweight fleece bedding set, she buried her face in the covers and took a deep breath. ’This is pure bliss,’ she thought.
As was her habit, she opened her phone before bed to browse the latest trending topics and see what was happening outside.
After all, the internet and power could be cut off for good by the time she woke up.
The internet was flooded with curses and profanity, and countless gory videos were being uploaded to every platform.
Some cursed the heavens for being unfair. Some cursed family members for abandoning them to save their own skins. Others cursed those who supposedly knew about the zombies but didn’t warn anyone. And many cursed the rescue teams for being so slow to arrive...
The virus was a global phenomenon; no place and no one was immune.
Government departments were in utter chaos. The construction of the "wall" had been suspended, making it impossible to organize timely rescue efforts.
Celestia’s population was so massive that the number of people turning into zombies was on a hellish scale...
Looking at all this negative information, Luna Dawson couldn’t help but frown. She cleared her mind, tossed her phone aside, and closed her eyes, falling into a deep sleep.
What she didn’t know was that she would sleep soundly for four whole days.
While she was unconscious, her family members had, one by one, also fallen into comas and then awakened.
Only Luna Dawson remained asleep. Seeing her breathing evenly but still not waking, everyone grew deeply concerned.
Even the four from next door came over to ask about her after they woke up.
Mrs. Dawson, in particular, had been keeping watch by her bedside ever since she herself had awakened, her eyes red and strained.
