Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Wall

Evan Olson listened, stunned. He simply couldn’t imagine how difficult it must have been for Luna Dawson, searching for them all by herself in that dog-eat-dog apocalypse, with only a cat and a dog for company.

"Luna, you’re already amazing."

Evan Olson couldn’t resist pulling her into a hug, patting her back a few times as he praised her. It was easy to hear the hoarseness in his voice.

That’s just how people are. When you have no one to talk to and no one to comfort you, you can almost forget the hardship. But the moment you find someone you can rely on, all the pain and suffering of being alone in your past life suddenly finds an outlet.

Luna Dawson rested her head on Brother Evan’s shoulder and burst out sobbing. "Back then... back then, I wished so badly you were all by my side... I wished I still had Brother Evan to protect me."

Tears welled up in Mrs. Dawson’s and Miles Dawson’s eyes, and they all cried together.

Mrs. Dawson gently patted Luna’s back as well. Once they had all calmed down a bit, Evan Olson spoke again. "If what Luna said is true, we have less than a month. We need to figure out what other preparations we can make."

Luna Dawson took a notebook from her space and opened her apocalypse plan for him to see.

The action still startled Evan Olson. He wasn’t quite used to it yet.

He muttered, "No wonder Kevin Keane said you bought a ton of stuff."

Luna Dawson jumped. "How does he know?"

"His squad has a hacker. That creepy bastard loves digging into people’s private lives. He dug up everything on you..." Evan Olson explained. "But don’t worry. They’re not bad people, and they know how to keep their mouths shut."

"...Fine. Can we kill them?"

Evan Olson choked, then said awkwardly, "Well, we have some history together. It doesn’t have to come to that..."

"Sigh..."

"I’ve got over six million. Since things are tightly controlled domestically, you and I should go out tomorrow and convert all of it into supplies. Otherwise, it’ll just be a useless number on a screen.

Luna, since your mom and Miles trust me enough to tell me all this, I swear I’ll protect everyone from now on!" Evan Olson quickly accepted the reality of the impending apocalypse, his mind already consumed with planning for the future.

"Okay. I’ve got over ten million here. Let’s go spend it all."

On November 27th, Luna Dawson and Evan Olson traveled abroad to stockpile goods.

Inside a dimly lit warehouse, the two of them watched as box after box of carefully selected weapons—tactical compound bows, tactical karambits, bayonets, hand grenades, and incendiary bombs—were stacked neatly.

Evan Olson repeatedly inspected the blades’ edges and the quality of the firearms. Each cold dagger radiated a lethal sharpness.

In the adjacent warehouse, twenty off-road motorcycles were lined up in formation. Five modified Hummers had been fitted with reinforced armor plating and bulletproof glass, exuding an overwhelming sense of raw, mechanical power.

Unlike Evan Olson, who was focused on practical supplies, Luna Dawson’s gaze was fixed on skincare and beauty products. Her expression was a mixture of adorable focus and sheer persistence as she stood before the shipping crates, carefully confirming brands and quantities.

Evan Olson stood to the side, his gentle gaze following her. An indulgent smile played on his lips as he reached out to gently brush the dust from her hair and watched her absorb the various supplies into her space.

For him, no matter how cruel the coming apocalypse might be, he was determined to protect his family.

After several hectic days, having secured all the supplies from the warehouse, the two had no time to rest. They grabbed their small bags and rushed straight to the airport, just in time to catch the last flight back home on the 30th.

At the boarding gate, Chinese faces were everywhere, dragging along their suitcases. Their hushed conversations were filled with anxiety about the current situation, and every word they spoke conveyed an arrow-straight desire to return home.

The cabin was almost full to capacity, with over ninety percent of the passengers being Chinese. Hardly anyone was making noise, and the air was thick with a shared, unspoken tension and anticipation.

The moment she stepped through the door, Hector and Rollo came running on their short little legs as if they were in a race. "Auntie, Hector missed you so much!"

He threw his arms around one of Luna Dawson’s legs, while Rollo frantically hopped around and latched onto the other.

Amused and exasperated, Luna Dawson had no choice but to crouch down, hugging one with her left arm and pulling the other in with her right.

"Why is my darling Hector home?"

"School’s cancelled!" he exclaimed, burying his little head into the crook of Luna’s neck and snuggling against her.

Rhonda Dawson saw them and came over to pick Hector up. Miles Dawson’s voice rang out, "Isn’t Brother Evan coming over?"

After they all sat down, Luna Dawson explained, "He went home to be with his grandpa. Sis, why are you back?"

"Dylan Rhodes and his family showed up at the school after classes the day before yesterday and caused a huge scene. They’re trying to force me to remarry him, saying that times are getting unstable and I can’t protect our child on my own," Rhonda Dawson explained with a sigh. "A few parents who were picking up their kids saw us arguing at the school gate. The administration said it was a bad look and told me to take some time off."

"That family is so shameless!" Miles Dawson said, exasperated.

"It just so happened that Hector’s kindergarten was cancelled, and with all the online rumors about a potential war, I figured I’d bring him back here to lie low and get away from his father."

"Perfect. Don’t go back. My precious Hector can stay home and keep me company. Here, give me your phone."

Luna Dawson happily planted a big smooch on Hector’s chubby little cheek, then held her hand out to her sister for the phone.

Rhonda Dawson unlocked her phone and handed it to Luna.

Luna said, "Block him. That’ll be the end of it. I’ll raise Hector from now on."

While Luna Dawson and her family were busy procuring supplies abroad, several provincial capitals across the country suddenly and simultaneously began construction projects on massive "walls."

Directives from the central government were quickly dispatched to all regions, with Southwest Kensington being the first to mobilize.

An area of over five hundred square kilometers, containing more than nine hundred established residential communities, was securely cordoned off. A single drone flight was enough to draw a clear red boundary line, perfectly visible on satellite maps.

The construction sites were bustling. Tens of thousands of workers, drafted from all corners of the country, worked in shifts around the clock, illuminating the night sky as if it were day.

Giant tower cranes stood tall like a forest of steel. Convoys of heavy transport trucks queued up, ceaselessly delivering high-strength steel rebar, blast-proof glass, and specialized concrete. Military police were even on-site helping to maintain order.

This nationwide construction project was no chaotic endeavor. Every step adhered to unified technical standards and a precise schedule.

In every provincial capital and other key areas, the roar of transport vehicles was constant as innumerable supplies were secretly shipped into the enclosed zones...

Emergency response departments operated like machines that had been wound up and would not stop, performing tasks that even their own staff couldn’t say for sure were the right course of action.

From Porten in the east and Sutherland in the south to Rondale in the west and Sheldon in the north, every provincial capital selected a wide, open area far from its city center to enclose within a wall.

The size of each enclosure was determined by the city’s population, but even the smallest was over fifty square kilometers.

The sudden emergence of these construction projects, coupled with the nation’s strict purchasing restrictions, left the populace feeling dazed and, more than anything, deeply unsettled.

Meanwhile, people both inside and outside the enclosures faced their own dilemmas. Some scrambled to buy houses within the walls, willing to pay exorbitant prices. Others, doubting the reliability of these zones, rushed to sell their properties at a premium, intending to cash out and move to more remote areas.

The internet was even more abuzz, with "The Walls" shooting straight to the number one trending topic.

Some netizens in the anime community claimed it was a real-life version of the titan anime, and social media platforms were flooded with discussions on the matter.

The government never stated the reason for the construction, only issuing a notice through official media channels: citizens were free to choose their place of residence, the sale and purchase of property remained unrestricted, and the relevant departments would ensure that daily life would be properly safeguarded for all.

And so, this nationwide construction project, which involved the entire country, moved forward step by step amidst the fervent discussions.
