SSS Class Awakening: I Can Forge My Beast Soul Avatars
Chapter 25: The Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 25: The Calm Before the Storm

The following days passed in a blur of sweat, bruises, and relentless preparation.

Every sunrise found Class 5E standing on the training grounds long before the rest of the academy had even finished breakfast, and every sunset marked another grueling session finally reaching its end.

Mr. Crosswell refused to let a single minute slip away. He drove the class with military intensity — pushing them through grueling obstacle courses, endurance runs, synchronized drills, and high-pressure combat simulations until every muscle screamed in protest.

Atlas and Seraphine, however, continued to train along a separate path.

Because both had only recently begun working alongside their partners, Mr. Crosswell insisted that building an unbreakable bond took precedence over teaching advanced combat maneuvers.

Every morning opened with synchronization exercises.

Atlas learned Skull’s subtle habits one small detail at a time.

The skeletal shadow wolf no longer chased every stray leaf that drifted across the field, nor did he tense up whenever unfamiliar students passed too close.

Instead, he rapidly began reading Atlas’s micro-gestures. A slight shift in Atlas’s shoulders signalled Skull to flank left; a quick glance was enough to make him freeze in place. By midweek, spoken orders were barely necessary.

Likewise, Atlas learned to interpret Skull’s silent language. The single twitch of an ear meant movement in the brush. A low, vibrating rumble warned of approaching danger. And a steady, heavy thud of his tail against the grass meant he was either excited... or hungry.

Usually hungry.

Meanwhile, Seraphine and Nella hit their own stride.

The minimal, fragile sparrow turned out to possess frighteningly sharp spatial awareness. During scouting drills, Nella could spot hidden markers, concealed traps, and distant targets long before anyone else even registered their presence.

Though she lacked raw physical power, her incredible field vision more than made up for it.

Slowly but surely, the quiet, self-doubting girl who had once hesitated to even reveal her partner began smiling whenever the tiny blue bird chirped happily against her shoulder.

Mr. Crosswell watched the shift with a satisfied grin. "See?" he noted one afternoon, resting his hands on his hips. "Trust doesn’t just drop out of the sky. You build it inch by inch."

Outside of physical practice, Atlas threw himself into mastering the mechanics of the Soul Forge.

Every evening after classes ended, he spent hours testing Skull’s capabilities, tracking how much Soul Essence different actions consumed and studying the wolf’s physical limitations. He wasn’t simply commanding a creature — he was dissecting its potential.

By Friday, even the rest of Class 5E had accepted the ominous-looking wolf as one of their own.

Well... almost everyone.

"I still say that thing looks like it dug its way out of a haunted tomb," Rex muttered one afternoon, watching Skull trot past with a wooden stick twice his own length clamped in his jaws.

Skull paused, tilted his bone snout, and let out a proud, muffled bark.

Rex sighed, crossing his arms. "...Okay, fine. Maybe it’s slightly cute."

Atlas couldn’t suppress a laugh.

By Friday morning, the atmosphere surrounding Class 5E had shifted dramatically.

The casual banter had quieted down. Nobody complained about the extra laps or the aching joints anymore. Every conversation naturally drifted back to one central topic:

The duel.

As the class exited the central cafeteria after lunch, two familiar figures stepped into the middle of the stone pathway, blocking their route.

They were the same two Class 5D lackeys who regularly shadowed Gerald.

One of them lazily tossed a small leather pouch into the air, catching it with a smirk. "Well, well... still running laps, Class 5E?"

His companion sneered. "Hope you’re enjoying your final day holding student rank. Tomorrow, you’re back at the bottom where you belong."

Rex’s face darkened instantly. "You’ve got a lot of nerve standing in our way." His armored ram stepped forward, lowering its massive horns as a low rumble vibrated in its chest.

"Oh?" the first boy taunted, taking a half-step back while raising an eyebrow. "You planning to start the fight early?"

"Gladly," Rex growled, taking an aggressive step forward.

His fingers were already hovering over the summoning crest at his belt when a calm, composed voice cut through the tension.

"Why?"

Everyone paused.

Cassandra stepped gracefully past Rex, casually brushing an imaginary speck of lint from her sleeve before fixing her gaze on the two intruders.

"If you’re so confident in your victory..." She offered a small, razor-sharp smile. "...why not save the energy for the arena?"

Silence hung in the air. The two Class 5D boys frowned, thrown off by her composure.

Cassandra continued smoothly, as if discussing the morning weather. "Or are you simply worried you’ll embarrass yourselves before an audience even arrives to watch?"

The sneers instantly vanished from their faces. "You’ve got a pretty loud mouth."

"I get that a lot," she replied, folding her arms. "I just prefer letting results speak louder than empty posturing."

For several long seconds, nobody moved.

Finally, the lead lackey spat on the ground. "Fine. Tomorrow, we’ll remind everyone why trash belongs under our boots." They turned on their heels and strode away down the path.

Only after they disappeared around the bend did Rex let out a frustrated breath. "I really wanted to break one of their noses."

"You’ll have plenty of chances tomorrow," Cassandra said calmly. "Save it for the ring."

Friday afternoon arrived faster than Atlas anticipated.

As arranged earlier in the week, he made his way back to the House of Wonders.

The moment Lucas spotted him stepping through the entrance, the hyperactive tailor grabbed Atlas by the arm and practically threw him into the fitting booth.

"No peeking at the uniform until it’s fitted!"

"Lucas, I—"

"No peeking!"

A few minutes of energetic adjustments later, the velvet curtain snapped back with a flourish.

"There!" Lucas declared dramatically, wiping a tear of artistic pride. "Absolute perfection!"

Atlas stepped up to the full-length mirror and paused.

For a moment, he just stared at his reflection.

The deep navy-blue blazer fit his shoulders flawlessly, its sharp black lapels accented by clean gold piping that caught the afternoon sun streaming through the window. The silver crest of Linux Academy gleamed proudly against his chest, set over a crisp, tailored white shirt.

It wasn’t too loose, nor was it restrictively tight. It felt natural.

Lucas circled him once more, making a tiny, obsessive tweak to the collar. "There. Now you look like a proper student of this academy."

Atlas looked at himself in the glass, a quiet smile forming on his face. For the first time since arriving in this academy, he actually felt like he belonged.

Night fell, wrapping the campus in quiet shadows.

Inside the Bronze Dormitory, the room gradually went still.

Eric’s desk lamp finally clicked off. Derrick’s steady snoring drifted down from the upper bunk, and even Claus had turned in unusually early.

Only Atlas remained wide awake.

He quietly swung his legs out of bed and stood up.

Across the room, a pair of crimson eyes instantly illuminated the dark corner. Skull lifted his bone skull off his paws.

"You awake too?" Atlas whispered.

The wolf’s tail gave two silent thumps against the floor.

Atlas smirked softly, pulling on his boots before slipping out the door. The skeletal wolf padded silently right beside his heels.

Together, they navigated the tranquil, moonlit corridors of the dormitory before heading out into the cool night air.

They walked until they reached a grassy ridge overlooking the vast expanse of the academy.

Below them, distant lamps cast a warm glow across the stone pathways, and the soaring spire of the central chapel cut sharply against the starry sky.

A gentle mountain breeze swept over the hill, carrying the scent of pine and night grass.

Atlas sat down on the hill, wrapping his arms around his knees. Skull immediately trotted over, circling twice before curling up right beside him and resting his heavy bone head across Atlas’s lap.

Atlas absentmindedly reached down, his fingers scratching the smooth bone plates right behind the wolf’s ears. Skull let out a low, satisfied purr of shadow energy.

For a long time, neither of them moved. They simply watched the peaceful lights of the campus together.

Tomorrow, the calm would end. Tomorrow, everything was on the line.

Atlas let out a slow, steady exhale, feeling the cool air fill his lungs.

"Tomorrow’s gonna be a wild ride, buddy."

Skull nudged Atlas’s hand firmly with his snout, looking up with his single glowing eye.

Atlas smiled down at his creation, his gaze hardening into quiet, unwavering resolve.

"...Let’s go take the win."

Skull responded with a single, low, confident bark that lost itself in the night wind.
