Chapter 16: Chapter 16: She Really Survived the Stormy Night
Realizing what she might see, Su Yuqing panicked. She quickly lowered her head, not daring to look at anything, and scurried forward to pick up the bath towel from the floor. She shook it open with her eyes shut before draping it back over Chen Mo’s body.
Although he was covered, the evidence of a healthy young man’s morning vigor was still visible through the towel, causing Su Yuqing to start.
Face flushing red, she could only quickly avert her gaze and hurry toward the kitchen to start preparing breakfast.
However, as she was preparing breakfast, her mind kept flashing back to the peak that had formed under the towel.
Her face grew even redder. Fortunately, once she got busy with her work, she quickly pushed all other thoughts from her mind.
Chen Mo had started cooking for himself back in high school. This was because his mother had insisted on it, so he had learned to cook from a young age.
In his mother’s words, home-cooked food was the only food you could truly trust.
Therefore, the house was actually quite well-stocked with ingredients.
Su Yuqing planned to make sandwiches with fried eggs, ham, and some vegetables, along with two glasses of hot milk for breakfast.
Having decided what to make, Su Yuqing immediately got to work. First, she toasted two slices of whole wheat bread, then cut them diagonally into triangles.
She heated a pan, then turned it down to medium-low heat. She poured in some olive oil to coat the bottom, then cracked an egg and slid it in from the edge of the pan. Once the egg white solidified and the edges were slightly crisp, she flipped it with a wooden spatula and sprinkled on a little salt.
Then, she used the remaining oil to pan-fry a thick-cut slice of ham until caramelized lines appeared on its surface.
After washing some romaine lettuce and drying it in a salad spinner, she carefully tore the leaves into bite-sized pieces.
Next, she took out a washed tomato, cut it into three-millimeter-thick slices, and used a paper towel to absorb the excess juice.
Finally, she laid the fried egg on a slice of crisp toast, then stacked the ham, a slice of cheese, the tomato, and the lettuce on top. Using a serrated knife, she pressed down firmly and cut the sandwich diagonally, then placed it in the microwave for a minute until the cheese along the cut was half-melted. And just like that, it was ready.
All that was left was the milk. Su Yuqing took a large bottle of milk from the refrigerator and poured it into an enamel milk pan. She heated it on the lowest flame to sixty degrees Celsius, immediately removing it from the heat as soon as fine bubbles appeared on the surface to prevent the milk fat from separating.
She put half a teaspoon of condensed milk into the bottom of each cup beforehand, then poured in the hot milk and gently stirred it with a chopstick to create a swirl.
Just as she was finishing up breakfast, Chen Mo, in the living room, had also woken up.
It wasn’t that he’d had enough sleep, but rather that he remembered he had a mission with his captain today.
He was still in a daze, half-asleep, as his right hand instinctively fumbled toward the nightstand—but where he should have felt his gun holster and phone, he only touched the cold glass of a coffee table.
’Something’s not right...’
Feeling that the "nightstand" was wrong, he abruptly propped himself up with his left hand. As he did so, he braced himself for the faint, sharp pain that would occasionally shoot through his left shoulder when he exerted it—a gunshot wound from chasing a violent criminal three years ago. But the pain from his memory never came.
Chen Mo subconsciously turned his head to look, only to see the skin on his left shoulder was smooth and unblemished.
He still wasn’t fully awake. Between the heavy rain he’d been caught in last night and his lack of sleep, his head felt groggy and heavy.
He habitually pressed the heels of his palms against his temples, a motion he’d developed over long years of working night shifts to clear his head.
After pressing his temples for a moment, the discomfort from his morning erection made him frown and lift the bath towel. The skin his eyes fell upon was suddenly at odds with his memory—on his nearly thirty-year-old body, there should have been a seven-centimeter stitched scar in his groin area.
He’d gotten it while saving a child held hostage by a mentally ill person, who had slashed him deeply with a knife.
Looking at his current state, Chen Mo was suddenly wide awake. He had returned to ten years in the past yesterday.
’I’m not a criminal investigator anymore. I’m just a high school student now.’
And the girl who would always lower her head shyly in front of him had also returned to his world.
The thought of Su Yuqing made him jump up anxiously and look toward the bedroom. The bedroom door was wide open. He frantically scanned the area, searching for any sign of her.
Only when he saw her bustling about in the kitchen did Chen Mo flop back onto the sofa, letting out a huge sigh of relief.
’Thank God, it wasn’t a dream. She really survived the storm!’ A wave of relief washed over Chen Mo, and he flopped heavily back onto the sofa again.
The special nature of a criminal investigator’s job meant he often had to face high-intensity pressure and complex, ever-changing cases, which led to a highly irregular sleep schedule.
To deal with sudden incidents, Chen Mo frequently had to be on standby, even conducting investigations and making arrests at night. This irregular work pattern had a direct impact on his sleep habits.
For so many years, he had almost never had a good night’s sleep. Mental exhaustion was his constant state, and cigarettes were practically an extension of his body.
Chen Mo hadn’t originally been a smoker, but the combination of high pressure and fatigue made the long nights of quiet stakeouts incredibly difficult to endure without something to keep him alert.
Although the job was grueling, Chen Mo never complained. He even immersed himself in it, enjoying the thrill of catching culprits after cracking a case.
But after so many years, he was indeed tired.
Now that he was back in his high school days, lying on the sofa, Chen Mo decided that since heaven had given him a chance to live again, this time he would choose to freely enjoy his youth.
In his past life, because of Su Yuqing’s death, he had been trapped in endless self-blame, spending every moment in agony and regret. As a result, he had thrown himself completely into the quagmire of atoning and finding her true killer.
He had never gotten to enjoy the prime of his youth that a high schooler was supposed to.
Now Su Yuqing was back, and his youthful days were back too.
This time, he decided he would truly live every minute of his life to the fullest.
While Chen Mo’s mind was churning with complex emotions, Su Yuqing had already finished making breakfast and set everything on the dining table.
Just then, she peeked her head out toward the living room. She saw Chen Mo lying lazily on the sofa under a blanket, staring at the ceiling, lost in thought. She called out softly, "Chen Mo, it’s time to get up and eat. I’ve made breakfast, but I don’t know if you’ll like it."
Chen Mo sat up again and sniffed in the direction of the dining room. The aroma of wheat and milk drifted over from the nearby table.
He immediately smiled and replied, "Be right there."
As he spoke, he started to get up again, only to realize with a jolt that he was completely naked. He glanced at the bath towel he had just tossed aside, quickly wrapped it around himself, and dashed back into his room.
Accustomed to taking a hot shower in the morning, he emerged a short while later, fully dressed after his shower.
’Moving around in a body free of injuries feels so effortless.’ Chen Mo was overwhelmed with emotion.
Last night, he hadn’t paid any attention to his physical condition, his mind focused solely on chasing the killer. Only today did he fully realize what a blessing it was to have returned to ten years in the past.
