Chapter 8: The Slime Suit
Chapter 8: The Slime Suit
The white sand continued moving slowly beneath their feet.
Liam could feel the ground trying to swallow him little by little.
With every passing second, more of his legs disappeared into that strange substance.
But before he could think of a solution, Lydia acted.
Her gelatinous body began spreading across the sand.
First a few inches.
Then several meters.
Her green mass expanded like a blanket over the white surface, covering a large portion of the ground in front of them.
Liam watched in surprise.
"Lydia..."
The small mass stopped.
Her tentacles rose slightly.
[Lydia: Get on top of me.]
He blinked.
"What?"
[Lydia: Trust me.]
For a moment, Liam hesitated.
Not because he didn’t trust her.
Quite the opposite.
But the situation was so absurd that even for them, it seemed impossible.
They were trapped inside a Rank D Dungeon.
Standing on sand that was trying to swallow them.
With thousands of giant eyes watching them from the sky.
And her solution was...
To climb onto his slime wife like she was a carpet.
But after everything they had gone through that day, nothing seemed too strange anymore.
"I’m not going to argue with you right now."
Liam smiled.
Carefully, he climbed onto Lydia’s extended body.
The gelatinous mass covered a huge portion of the sand in front of him.
It was soft and strangely comfortable.
Like sitting on a pillow made of jelly.
For a moment, Liam forgot they were in danger.
"Lydia..."
He looked down.
"How are you not sinking?"
The response came quickly.
[Lydia: I’m absorbing the sand around us.]
Liam widened his eyes.
"Absorbing it?"
Before he could ask anything else, a system window appeared.
[Your Slime has absorbed Hard Material.]
Liam tilted his head.
"Hard material?"
Another window appeared.
[Your Slime has learned: Harden.]
For several seconds, there was silence.
Then Liam burst into laughter.
"No way."
[Lydia: What’s wrong?]
He shook his head, amused.
"Apparently, this crazy system considers this sand a hard material."
He looked at the white sand that seemed like dust.
"When I can literally sink my hands into it and barely feel like I’m touching anything."
Lydia began moving.
Her body trembled slightly, as if she was laughing.
[Lydia: I guess the system has a pretty strange definition of things.]
Liam smiled.
But the smile quickly disappeared.
Because they were still inside a Dungeon.
And they still had no idea how to escape.
[Lydia: So...]
[Lydia: What do we do now?]
[Lydia: What are you thinking about doing to get out of this Rank D Dungeon?]
Liam raised his head.
He looked around.
Nothing.
White sand.
A purple sky.
Thousands of eyes watching them from above.
There were no monsters.
No structures.
No paths or doors.
It was a completely empty place.
He placed a hand on his chin.
"We can’t stay here waiting."
Lydia remained attentive.
"If this really is a Dungeon... and if it works like a tower..."
He looked upward.
"Then this should be the final floor. Maybe we can descend. Find some kind of door."
He thought about the sand beneath them.
"Maybe we can use this."
He looked at Lydia.
"If you keep absorbing the sand, we might be able to go down."
But he frowned.
"The problem is, I don’t know how much you can absorb. Or how far we would have to descend. And if this goes all the way to the bottom..."
He paused.
"...you could get exhausted."
Lydia remained silent.
Then Liam had an idea.
"Lydia."
[Lydia: Yes?]
"How far can you stretch?"
She seemed confused.
[Lydia: I don’t know.]
[Lydia: I’ve never reached my limit.]
[Lydia: I don’t feel pain when I stretch.]
One of her small tentacles extended several inches to demonstrate.
[Lydia: Why?]
Liam smiled.
"Because maybe we have another option."
She waited.
"Can you stretch enough to cover my entire body?"
Silence.
[Lydia: ...]
Liam continued.
"If you can completely cover me, you can prevent the sand from drowning me."
The response arrived with a small laugh.
[Lydia: That’s the clever husband I know.]
Liam smiled.
[Lydia: Yes.]
[Lydia: We can try.]
He looked at the system window.
"Besides... you learned a skill called Harden. According to the system, you can harden the outer part of your body. Maybe that will help."
He thought for a moment.
"I’ll try to hold my breath."
Lydia took a few seconds.
[Lydia: So... am I going to be your diving suit?]
Liam burst into laughter.
"Don’t look at it that way. It sounds much stranger when you say it like that."
[Lydia: But technically...]
"Yes, technically you’re right."
He sighed, amused.
"I just think this is the best way to handle this."
Both of them remained silent.
Then Lydia wrote.
[Lydia: Alright.]
[Lydia: Let’s try it.]
[Lydia: Get ready.]
Liam took a deep breath.
Then he inhaled as much air as he could.
And Lydia began to move.
Her body rose.
It stretched.
The gelatinous mass began covering his legs.
Then his torso.
His arms.
His shoulders.
His head.
Within seconds, Liam was completely surrounded by his wife’s body.
It was strange because he could see the outside perfectly, since his wife’s body was translucent.
Now he didn’t feel afraid.
Then he felt a change.
The mass surrounding him no longer felt as viscous.
It became firmer.
More stable.
[Skill activated: Harden.]
Liam slowly moved one arm.
He expected himself to sink.
But nothing happened.
He could move.
He could breathe the air that remained trapped inside.
And he remained inside Lydia’s body without breaking through her.
Surprised, he closed his eyes.
’Lydia...’
Using the Call skill, his thoughts reached her directly.
’Lydia, it seems like it works.’
The response came immediately.
[Lydia: I knew it.]
[Lydia: I knew it would work.]
Liam smiled.
[Lydia: You’re a genius.]
He let out a small laugh.
"Don’t exaggerate."
[Lydia: No.]
[Lydia: I’m serious.]
Liam looked around.
Even though they were still trapped.
Even though thousands of eyes were watching them.
Even though they had no idea what they would find after descending...
He felt like they had a chance to survive without having to wait for hunters to come and rescue them.
’Then...’
He thought.
’Let’s go down.’
The sand began moving beneath them.
Liam threw himself into the sand as if it were an ocean, beginning to descend and be swallowed by it.
But this time, he wasn’t falling alone.
He was inside his wife.
And together, they were heading into the unknown.
