Chapter 29: Pix, the System Pixie
Chapter 29: Pix, the System Pixie
The mountaintop descended into chaos.
The only Dark Condor chick that had escaped the nest was charging toward Liam on its three legs, letting out those awful screeches that no longer sounded like cries for help, but the shrieks of a hungry predator.
From the opposite end of the sky, the enormous Dark Condor spread its massive black wings as it dove toward them at incredible speed.
Its three eyes burned with fury.
It had watched its chicks fall over the cliff.
Now it was coming for the ones responsible.
Liam raised his pistol, unsure which of the two enemies he should aim at first.
Then, another window appeared before his eyes.
It wasn’t like the previous ones.
[Pix: I’m sorry...]
A sad-face emoji appeared at the end of the message.
Liam blinked.
"Pix?"
Lydia, still keeping several tentacles extended around him to protect him, sent him a message.
[Lydia: Honey... what do we do about these birds?]
Liam was still staring at the strange window.
"Who the hell is Pix?"
At that exact moment, a small circle of light appeared right in front of them.
The light began to condense.
From it emerged a tiny creature barely six inches tall.
She had shoulder-length green hair, long pointed ears, delicate transparent wings like those of a dragonfly, and a tiny round hat that barely stayed balanced on top of her head.
The little creature yawned, looked one way, then the other, and squinted.
"Where are...?"
Liam stared at her in complete confusion.
The tiny creature finally turned toward them and smiled.
"Hi!"
She raised one hand.
"I’m Pix."
Then she pointed at one of the floating windows.
"Well... actually... I’m your system."
Liam took several seconds to react.
"My... system?"
The tiny fairy nodded enthusiastically.
"Yep! I’m an administrative pixie."
Then she sighed.
"Although..."
She scratched her cheek.
"...I’ve made a few small mistakes."
Liam crossed his arms.
"Small?"
Pix gave him a nervous smile.
"I lost my glasses a few weeks ago..."
She leaned forward, trying to focus on Liam.
"I can’t see very well."
Liam slowly opened his mouth.
"Are you telling me you mistook a dragon for a bug because your eyesight is bad?"
Pix lowered her head.
"More or less... Sorry."
Before Liam could answer, the chick was already only a few yards away, and the gigantic condor was diving straight toward them.
Lydia extended even more tentacles around Liam.
[Lydia: Honey! They’re almost on top of us!]
Liam looked back at Pix.
Then he noticed something.
The little pixie was swaying from side to side.
Her cheeks were flushed.
And she gave off the unmistakable smell of alcohol.
Liam frowned.
"Are you... drunk?"
Pix raised a finger.
"Not drunk. Just a little tipsy."
She pulled out a tiny cup carved from a mushroom.
"Mushroom wine is really good."
Liam pressed a hand against his forehead.
"This is not the time to look for your glasses or get drunk."
He pointed at the two birds that were practically upon them.
"If you can do something, then do it!"
Pix slowly turned toward the condor and squinted.
"Where?"
Liam sighed.
"No... forget it."
He tightened his grip on the pistol.
"Lydia."
[Lydia: Yes, honey?]
"Use your Acid and aim for the wings. We need to bring them down."
[Lydia: Got it!]
Lydia’s tentacles spread apart.
A bright green substance began flowing from each one.
The chick was hit first.
The acid burned through the few feathers covering its wings.
Its exposed flesh began to sizzle.
The monster let out a blood-curdling screech.
"KRRRIIIII!!"
It tumbled across the rocks, unable to keep running.
"Now!"
Liam shouted.
"Consume it!"
Lydia’s body launched forward.
In barely a second, she completely enveloped the little monster.
It struggled to escape.
But it was already too late.
Its body slowly dissolved inside the slime.
As that happened, Pix summoned a tiny magical keyboard in front of her.
The keys floated in midair.
The pixie began typing with both index fingers.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
A new window instantly appeared.
[Your Slime has consumed a Dark Condor Chick.]
Another line appeared beneath it.
[Your Slime has reached Lv. 38.]
Liam slowly raised his eyes toward the pixie and watched her type.
"...So it’s you."
Pix smiled proudly.
"Of course! I write all the notifications. Hic."
Liam let out a long sigh.
’Now I understand why this system works so badly.’
’It’s being run by a nearsighted fairy who’s also drunk.’
He didn’t have time to think any further.
The Dark Condor was already above them.
Its enormous talons descended, ready to tear Liam apart.
"Lydia."
She was already prepared.
Several tentacles shot forward.
Instead of trying to consume the bird immediately, they unleashed another wave of acid.
The monster was drenched across one of its wings.
Its feathers began dissolving.
The condor lost its balance.
It tried to regain altitude.
But it was too late.
With a tremendous crash, it slammed into the mountaintop.
"Now!"
Liam shouted.
"Don’t let it get back up!"
Lydia’s entire gelatinous body crashed down over the gigantic monster.
The bird thrashed wildly inside.
Its three legs clawed desperately at the ground.
Its enormous beak pierced Lydia’s body over and over again.
But she refused to let go.
Her acid continued weakening the monster’s feathers and thick hide.
Its movements gradually slowed.
Until they stopped completely.
Pix placed her hands back on her keyboard and typed rapidly.
A new notification appeared.
[Your Slime has consumed a Great Dark Condor.]
Several more lines immediately followed.
[Lydia Davis has reached Lv. 40.]
[Lydia Davis — Shapeshifter Slime Lv. 40.]
Lydia’s green body began radiating an intense light.
Her entire gelatinous mass trembled.
Then it began to change.
First came a pair of slender legs.
Then her figure continued to lengthen.
Her silhouette no longer resembled a sphere.
Arms took shape.
The green colour slowly faded away, giving way to human skin.
Long black hair fell over her shoulders.
Her face gradually came into focus.
The same eyes.
The same nose.
The same gentle smile Liam remembered.
Standing before him was no longer just a slime.
Lydia stood there.
She had regained her human appearance.
She slowly lowered her gaze to her own hands.
Opening them.
Closing them.
She took a deep breath.
Then she lifted her head.
Her eyes immediately searched for Liam.
He remained frozen.
It felt as though time itself had stopped.
After everything they had been through.
After seeing her transformed into a tiny gelatinous blob.
After surviving one dungeon after another together.
He was seeing her again.
And she was exactly as he remembered.
Every feature of her face.
Every expression.
Every tiny detail he had treasured in his memory.
Lydia smiled, her eyes glistening with tears.
"Honey..."
That single word made Liam’s chest tighten.
His lips trembled.
"Lydia..."
His wife was standing before him once again.
