Chapter 2: My Wife Is a Slime?
"Lydia..."
The light was still pouring out from the bedroom.
Liam stood frozen in the hallway, his heart pounding so hard against his chest that he could hear every beat ringing in his ears.
"Lydia, can you hear me?"
No answer.
The green window continued floating before his eyes.
The text changed once again.
[Beast obtained.]
Beneath it, a small green icon appeared, depicting the silhouette of a gelatinous creature.
[Lydia Davis — Simple Slime Lv. 1]
"...What?"
Liam felt his stomach twist.
"No... no, wait."
He read it again.
Lydia Davis.
There was no mistake.
It was his wife’s name.
"What the hell is going on?"
For a brief moment, he wondered if the System had made some kind of error.
Or if there happened to be another Lydia Davis somewhere.
But that was ridiculous.
He didn’t know anyone else by that name.
And the light was still coming from the bedroom.
Without another thought, he ran to the door.
He knocked hard.
"Honey! Are you alright?"
Silence.
"Lydia."
Nothing.
He knocked again.
"Answer me!"
Once again, complete silence.
A terrible feeling crept through his entire body.
He grabbed the doorknob, took a deep breath, and opened the door.
The room was...
Normal.
The bed was perfectly made.
Freshly folded clothes rested neatly on a chair.
The furniture gleamed as if it had just been polished.
There was no sign of the strange flash of light.
No explosion.
And no Lydia.
"What...?"
His eyes swept across the room once more.
Then he saw it.
Resting in the middle of the bed was a small green blob.
It was only slightly larger than a football.
Translucent.
Gelatinous.
Its glossy surface reflected the light filling the room.
It looked...
Like an enormous glob of slime.
Liam frowned.
"Where did that come from?"
Instinctively, he took a step back.
Leaning beside the door was the broom Lydia had been using to clean.
He grabbed the handle with both hands.
"I hope you don’t mind. I’m just going to find out what the hell you are..."
He slowly extended the broom.
The tip touched the green surface.
Plop.
The wood sank into the blob with surprising ease.
As though it were pushing through an enormous bowl of jelly.
Liam’s eyes widened.
"Huh?"
He quickly pulled the broom back.
The blob returned to its original shape with a gentle ripple.
It wobbled several times before becoming still again.
At that exact moment, another window appeared before him.
This one was different.
It looked like a chat window.
[Lydia: Hey, that tickles.]
"..."
Liam let the broom fall to the floor.
"What?"
Another message appeared immediately.
[Lydia: It’s completely dark... I can’t see anything... What’s happening?]
Liam felt as though the entire world had stopped.
"No..."
He took a step backwards.
"It can’t be."
He pinched his forearm as hard as he could.
"Ow!"
It hurt.
He waited to wake up.
Nothing happened.
He looked around the room again.
The broom was still lying on the floor.
The green blob was still sitting on the bed.
And the strange chat window still floated before him.
"I’m not dreaming..."
he muttered, his voice trembling.
"This can’t be some nightmare where I get fired... and my wife turns into a blob of slime..."
He took several deep breaths, trying to calm himself.
It didn’t help.
The window flashed again.
[Lydia: Hey, this isn’t funny. I can’t feel my legs or my arms. What’s happening?]
A lump formed in Liam’s throat.
"Lydia..."
Before he could reply, another window appeared.
This one was clearly a System message.
[As a Slime Tamer, you can synchronise your senses with your beast, allowing it to see and hear.]
[Would you like to do so?]
[Yes] [No]
Liam didn’t hesitate for even a second.
He selected the option.
"Yes."
The window disappeared.
Nothing happened for a moment.
Then another message appeared.
[Lydia: Who left that thing on the bed? I just finished cleaning.]
Liam blinked.
"That thing?"
He looked around.
There was nothing unusual.
Only...
Her.
He slowly approached the bed.
"Lydia..."
[Lydia: Yes?]
"...I think that thing is you."
Several seconds passed in silence.
Then another message appeared.
[Lydia: ...]
[Lydia: Liam?]
[Lydia: Is that really you? What’s happening?]
He swallowed.
"I don’t know."
He carefully picked up the small gelatinous blob with both hands.
It was surprisingly light.
And warm.
Like holding a water balloon filled with warm water.
He walked out of the bedroom.
Then he stopped in front of the hallway mirror.
"Can you see now?"
A couple of seconds passed.
Then new messages appeared.
[Lydia: Yes... wait...]
[Lydia: That’s you.]
[Lydia: I’m looking at your face.]
Liam let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Then it worked."
She was silent for a few moments.
Then another message appeared.
[Lydia: Why am I inside your body?]
Liam shook his head.
"No."
He tried to organise his thoughts.
"You’re not inside me. The System synchronised your senses with mine. You’re seeing what I’m seeing."
A pause followed.
[Lydia: ...That doesn’t answer the important question.]
Liam let out a nervous laugh.
"You’re right."
He looked down at the small green blob resting in his hands.
"This is... complicated."
He took a deep breath.
"I think I awakened a power."
The words sounded absurd even to him.
"Like the Hunters."
He glanced at the green window still floating nearby.
"A window appeared in front of me. It said I’d activated something called the Beast Tamer System."
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
"Then it tried to summon my contracted beast. After that, it gave me an error. Then..."
He fell silent for a few seconds.
"...Then it said it had selected the nearest compatible target."
He gently raised the little slime.
"And when I came into the room... I found you like this."
Silence.
Then another message appeared.
[Lydia: ...Like what?]
Liam closed his eyes for a moment.
He knew the next part would be difficult.
"According to the System... for some reason... it turned you into my beast."
He waited.
No response.
He looked at the floating window again.
The same status remained displayed.
[Lydia Davis — Simple Slime Lv. 1]
With a mixture of guilt and disbelief, he finished explaining.
"The System says you’re now... a Simple Slime Lv. 1."
The chat remained motionless for several long seconds.
So long that Liam began to wonder if Lydia had simply stopped existing.
Then a single line appeared.
[Lydia: ...Are you telling me I’m a green slime now?]
