Chapter 25: 25: Unhinged

The next few minutes left Roderic in utter disbelief.

Several civilians had genuinely started patching up Rick and Darrel, even rubbing herbs into their wounds just to wake them up again.

Then they happily continued pelting them with stones and rotten tomatoes.

’This barony might be a little more unhinged than I thought...’ Roderic thought in awe.

Behind him, Captain Harris struggled to hold back Sir Roland.

’’Young Master! This is too much!’’ he shouted. ’’This is pure, dishonorable torture!’’

Captain Harris immediately tightened his grip on Sir Roland’s arm.

’’Please calm yourself, Sir Roland,’’ he said firmly.

Roderic only quietly watched on, unable to hide his admiration.

After a few seconds, he finally turned back to Sir Roland.

’’Just wait,’’ he said calmly. ’’The punishment time is almost over.’’

Sir Roland bit down on his bottom lip, his breathing heavy.

After staring at his son for several long seconds, he slowly lowered his head.

’’I understand,’’ he said hoarsely.

A couple more minutes ticked by slowly.

By now, Rick and Darrel had long stopped screaming.

Their bodies hung limply against the wooden posts, covered in bruises, cuts, rotten tomatoes, and dried blood.

After the civilians had run out of rotten tomatoes, they gradually stopped throwing stones as well.

The anger that had filled the central square just minutes ago had completely faded away, as though a switch had been flipped in their minds.

Civilians stood around, talking and laughing with each other, feeling safer and prouder than ever before.

At last, a loud bell echoed across the central square.

DONG! DONG! DONG!

Roderic immediately walked back toward the podium.

’’Time’s up!’’ he shouted, clapping his hands.

The conversations throughout the square gradually came to a halt as hundreds of eyes locked onto Roderic.

A faint smile grew on Roderic’s face as he glanced through the crowd.

’’Has your anger been quelled?’’ he asked loudly.

It didn’t even take a second.

’’YES!’’

Hundreds of people answered him all at once.

Many raised their fists into the air, large smiles on their faces.

’’Thank you, Young Master!’’

’’Justice has finally been served!’’

’’Those damn bastards got what they deserved.’’

Roderic’s smile only widened.

’Perfect,’ he thought. ’They’ll remember this for a long time.’

He slowly raised his hand once more, calming down the cheering.

’’Good,’’ he said. ’’Then let us put this matter to rest.’’

Not a single civilian complained.

’’As promised, everyone who’s suffered losses under Rick and Darrel may report them to Captain Harris. You will receive full compensation if proven truthful.’’

The crowd erupted into cheers once more.

Many bowed deeply toward the podium, large, relieved smiles clearly visible on their faces.

Roderic quietly accepted their gratitude before turning around.

His gaze settled on the two battered, almost unrecognizable figures still tied to the wooden poles.

Without another word, he pulled one of his azure hook blades off his back. A thick blue aura immediately wrapped itself around the blade, attracting everyone’s attention.

SHING!

His blade moved through the air in one fluid arc.

SNAP!

The thick ropes binding the two boys snapped apart instantly.

As Roderic put his blade back on his back, another loud noise echoed out behind him.

CRACK!

Both wooden poles were cleanly severed in two.

For a brief moment, the entire square fell silent.

’’Guards,’’ Roderic called out casually. ’’Take these two away.’’

Snapping out of their daze, two knights immediately stepped forward. Each picked up one boy before hurriedly getting off the podium.

Roderic turned back toward the civilians one last time.

’’Thank you all for coming today,’’ he said. ’’I take justice very seriously. As long as I stand here, no one is above it.’’

The crowd immediately erupted.

’’Thank you, Young Master!’’

’’The Third Young Master is completely different from what I thought!’’

’’Safe travels, Young Master!’’

With that, Roderic turned and stepped off the podium.

Several knights instantly surrounded him as they guided him back through the crowd.

By the time Roderic arrived at the town clinic, Rick and Darrel had already been laid on separate beds.

Several physicians hurried around the room, cleaning wounds, applying medicinal herbs, and wrapping bandages around their battered bodies.

Standing near the entrance were Captain Harris, Sir Benjamin, and Sir Roland.

The moment they noticed Roderic enter, all three immediately turned toward him.

’’Young Master,’’ the three bowed politely.

Roderic gave the three men a small nod.

’’How are they?’’ he asked, glancing at the two beds.

One of the elderly physicians stepped away from Rick and bowed respectfully.

’’Their injuries are severe, Young Master,’’ he replied quickly. ’’Several fractured bones, countless cuts and bruises, and significant blood loss.’’

The elderly physician hesitated for a moment.

’’If their wounds aren’t treated properly, they’ll likely become infected. At that point... their deaths would be guaranteed.’’

Both Sir Roland and Sir Benjamin winced at the words.

Roderic remained silent for a moment before looking back at the physician.

’’Then make sure that doesn’t happen,’’ he said calmly. ’’Use whatever medicine you need. I’ll cover the cost personally if necessary.’’

The elderly physician nodded immediately.

’’Yes, Young Master!’’

Roderic slowly turned toward the two fathers.

Before he could speak, both men lowered themselves onto one knee.

’’Young Master...’’ Sir Benjamin said hoarsely. ’’Thank you for sparing our sons. We know they brought this upon themselves. This kindness... we will never forget it.’’

Sir Roland nodded in agreement.

’’No matter what becomes of them after today, they will answer for their actions. We will make sure of it.’’

Roderic gave a small nod.

’’Good,’’ he said simply.

A brief moment of silence fell between them.

That’s when Sir Benjamin finally glanced up slightly with an ashen expression on his face.

’’There is... one more matter, Young Master,’’ he said, his voice having grown even more hoarse. ’’The compensation for the civilians... we will do our utmost to repay them, even if we have to sell our estate—’’

Roderic shook his head right away.

’’That won’t be necessary at all,’’ he said, a faint smile on his face.

Both fathers glanced up in surprise immediately.

’’The compensation will be paid by the Whitemane family,’’ Roderic said calmly. ’’Consider it our way of repaying the years of loyal service you’ve given this barony.’’

Sir Benjamin stared at Roderic, momentarily speechless. Sir Roland was no different.

Neither had ever expected such a response.

Sir Benjamin lowered his head immediately.

’’Thank you, Young Master. Truly,’’ Sir Benjamin said, his voice cracking. ’’Our families will never forget what you’ve done for us today.’’
