Chapter 20: 20: Darrel And Rick

Roderic lightly shoved aside the crowd.

The moment the civilians noticed him, murmurs and whispers rang out all around him.

’’Isn’t that the young master?’’

’’Didn’t he get sent to the Southern Forest?’’

’’I can’t believe the young master survived...’’

The sudden commotion quickly drew Darrel and Rick’s attention away from the man they were taunting.

Darrel turned his fat body around first.

The moment his eyes landed on Roderic, he froze.

’’You!’’ he shouted, his eyes widening.

Rick frowned, immediately following his gaze.

For a brief second, confusion flickered across his face.

Then his expression twisted into one of pure anger.

’’You little bastard!’’ he snarled. ’’Don’t think I’ve forgotten about the damn sand you threw!’’

His hand immediately shot towards the hilt of his blade.

’’I’m going to carve yo—’’

’’Relax,’’ Darrel interrupted, stepping in front of him with a wide grin. ’’Leave this one to me.’’

He slowly cracked his knuckles before drawing his sword.

’’Last time you got lucky,’’ he chuckled, glancing at Roderic. ’’You played dirty and scurried away with your tail between your legs.’’

He pointed the tip of his sword straight towards him.

’’But now?’’ he sneered. ’’You won’t be able to run away.’’

Roderic stared at Darrel for a moment, his eyebrows slowly raising.

’’Just out of curiosity,’’ he started, genuine confusion written across his face. ’’How would you stop me from running away?’’

Pointing at his body, Roderic couldn’t help but chuckle once.

’’You’re still just as fat as last time,’’ he continued with a smirk. ’’So tell me... you don’t actually believe you’d be able to catch me, do you?’’

For a brief moment, the entire street fell silent.

Several civilians instinctively looked at Darrel’s stomach, causing some to chuckle faintly.

Darrel’s face immediately flushed bright red.

’’Y-You...’’ he growled, his grip around the sword tightening until his knuckles turned white. ’’You think you’re funny?!’’

Roderic shrugged lightly.

’’A little.’’

Darrel’s face only grew a deeper shade of red.

’’YOU BASTARD!’’ he roared as he raised his sword and charged straight at Roderic.

The surrounding civilians immediately cried out in alarm, scrambling out of the way.

A very thin, almost transparent blue aura appeared around Darrel’s sword, flickering uncontrollably.

’Weak,’ Roderic thought, gathering his own aura around his right fist. ’He’s barely got control over it.’

A bright blue aura wrapped around his fist.

Darrel slowly closed the distance, sweat already beading down his forehead.

Finally, his sword whistled through the air as he swung it roughly towards Roderic’s shoulder.

Roderic reacted immediately.

He lowered his body and stepped forward.

Without hesitation, he swung his fist with all his strength.

THUD!

The fist drove straight into Darrel’s stomach, sinking into the countless fat rolls.

Darrel’s eyes bulged as every bit of air was forced from his lungs.

His feet left the ground instantly.

BOOM!!!

His round body flew back like a cannonball, smashing straight through the store’s wooden window before disappearing inside.

Wood splinters and dust exploded into the street.

For a moment, everything fell deathly silent.

The civilians all stared at the gaping hole in the store’s window, their eyes wide with shock.

Rick remained frozen in place, his mouth hanging wide open.

’’D-Darrel?’’ he called out.

Several seconds passed by... but no answer ever came.

Rick slowly turned his head towards Roderic.

Seeing the calm smile on his face, Rick trembled like a leaf as he pulled out his own sword.

’’S-stay away,’’ he stuttered as he took a few slow steps back.

Roderic stared at the lanky man for a moment.

His expression slowly began to shift into something far more serious.

’’By the way,’’ he said, his voice low. ’’You do know what you are doing right now, correct?’’

Rick didn’t respond.

All he could do was swallow hard while taking another step back.

But Roderic didn’t mind. After all, these words weren’t directed towards Rick in particular.

Instead, they were for everyone watching.

’’You’ve threatened a noble, attempted to murder a noble, and openly insulted the Whitemane family,’’ Roderic said, his voice echoing across the silent street. ’’Even now, you’re still pointing a sword at a member of the barony’s ruling family.’’

He slowly looked around at the surrounding civilians.

’’According to the kingdom’s laws, each of those crimes is punishable by death.’’

Rick’s face instantly turned deathly pale.

As much as he wanted to say something, his mouth refused to open.

Clang!

His sword dropped to the ground.

Then, without another word, he turned around and ran.

The surrounding civilians watched in stunned disbelief as Rick sprinted down the street, disappearing around the nearest corner without looking back once.

’’He... he’s running?’’

’’The young master... beat them?’’

Whispers rang out all around instantly.

Roderic only smiled as the aura dissipated from his hands.

’’Smart decision,’’ he muttered quietly. ’’But that doesn’t mean it’s over yet.’’

He’d seen people like this countless times back on Earth.

They may run away, apologize, use excuses, or try to gain sympathy some way or another.

But if given the chance to do the same, they’d instantly do so.

’Which makes them the perfect people to make an example out of.’

Roderic turned to the whispering civilians with a soft smile.

’’Can someone call the guards?’’ he asked. ’’I’ll personally keep watch over this criminal here.’’

The surrounding civilians looked at one another, still shocked and unable to process his words properly.

Then an elderly man stepped forward and bowed deeply.

’’Right away, Young Master,’’ he said before hurrying toward the manor.

Roderic nodded faintly before walking past the shattered window.

Inside the store, Darrel lay buried beneath broken shelves and splintered wood, groaning weakly as he struggled to move.

’’Let’s see,’’ he muttered, tilting his head. ’’You two were from prominent knight families, huh.’’

The smile on his face only grew wider as he thought about it.

He watched Darrel try to push himself up, only to collapse back down straight away.

’’Heh,’’ he chuckled, folding his arms. ’’Now let’s see how much their families value them.’’
