Chapter 17: Kill
Chapter 17: 17: Kill
Roderic swung his Azure Blade up with every ounce of strength he had left.
CLANG!
It sliced straight through the approaching knife as though it were made of butter.
Before the mercenary could even react, the blade continued and sliced through four of his fingers.
The mercenary’s eyes went wide with shock.
Without hesitation, he threw himself backward.
The Azure Blade narrowly missed his neck by a fraction, leaving only a shallow cut.
Only then did Roderic stumble back himself.
The awkward swing from an even worse position had thrown his entire body off balance.
’Damn it...’ he thought, gritting his teeth. ’That should’ve killed him.’
He shook his head, snapping back into concentration.
His eyes locked onto the mercenary.
The man had long since turned his back on him, fury in his eyes as he ran toward his greatsword.
’I need to finish him!’ he told himself. ’Right now!’
Without hesitating, he raised his right hand with his blade.
Just as the mercenary was about to reach his greatsword...
Thud!
A blue blade roughly buried itself in the back of his skull.
The man’s eyes lost all signs of life in an instant, his body collapsing lifelessly onto the ground.
Several yards away, Roderic remained still for several seconds, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
’I hit it,’ he thought, letting out a deep breath.
His legs wobbled beneath him, completely drained of energy.
Roderic bit down hard on the inside of his cheek until he tasted blood.
’Stay awake!’ he shouted internally. ’If I pass out now, I’ll die from blood loss... or an infection.’
He staggered forward.
His vision blurred in and out as he slowly made his way over to the campfire.
’Just... a little further...’ he thought desperately.
By the time he reached the fire, he was panting heavily.
The flames had grown much stronger, heating the metal pole he’d used to cook his food earlier.
After confirming it was still there, his attention immediately shifted to the arrow lodged in his shoulder.
As his hand wrapped around the arrow’s shaft, he let out a deep breath.
’’Now!’’ he shouted, closing his eyes.
Roderic ripped the arrow free in one violent motion.
A muffled groan escaped through his clenched teeth.
Fresh blood immediately poured from the wound, soaking what remained of his shirt.
There wasn’t a second to recover.
Roderic immediately grabbed the metal pole and slammed the glowing iron against the wound.
Ssssssss!
Excruciating pain shot through him.
The smell of burning flesh instantly filled the air.
Even then, Roderic refused to pull the iron away.
’Compared to getting my new physique...’ he thought, his head growing light. ’This is nothing!’
Only after his wound had completely seared shut did he drop the metal rod.
Roderic collapsed onto all fours, gasping for breath.
’Infection... need to prevent...’
The world around him slowly spun as he crawled toward his bag.
His fingers fumbled through the supplies before grabbing the small pouch Edmund had left him.
Without bothering to identify it, he scooped up a large amount of medicinal paste and pressed it against the burned wound.
A cooling sensation spread through his shoulder.
’Good enough...’ he thought, smiling.
With that thought, Roderic’s strength completely faded.
Thud!
He collapsed beside his bag, completely unconscious.
Time rapidly passed.
Eventually, even the crackling of his campfire disappeared, leaving Roderic lying there in complete silence.
...
A deep breath left his mouth as his eyelids fluttered open.
For several seconds, Roderic just lay there.
The memories of before slowly started returning to him.
’Ugh,’ he thought groggily. ’How long was I out for?’
With a groan, Roderic pushed himself off the ground into a sitting position.
Surprisingly, he barely felt any pain while doing so.
His expression changed immediately.
’My shoulder!’ he thought, eyes widening.
As he glanced at his left side, his torn shirt was still there, stained dark red with his own blood.
Yet underneath it... the wound had completely closed.
Only a faint, ugly scar remained, looking almost like a bullet wound rather than one left by an arrow.
’’Huh?’’ he muttered, brows furrowing.
Roderic cautiously rolled his shoulder.
Apart from some stiffness, there were no sudden spikes of pain.
’’It healed?’’ he muttered in disbelief. ’’But how?’’
Before he could figure it out, a blue system screen popped up in front of him.
[One Aura Seal Mercenary Slain: +2 Throne Coins.]
[Current Balance: 752 Throne Coins.]
Roderic blinked several times.
Then, a small grin began spreading across his face.
’’Right,’’ he said, flicking the screens away. ’’There’s only one reason that wound could’ve healed so quickly.’’
It had to be because of the Supreme Aura Physique the system had given him.
Anything else simply didn’t make sense!
’’Well... unless there’s, like, a beautiful church saint hiding in these bushes.’’
Roderic deliberately said it loudly enough for the entire forest to hear, half praying for such a saint to step out.
But alas, his luck wasn’t that good.
With a disappointed sigh, Roderic pushed himself off the ground.
’’Moving on,’’ he muttered, glancing around his camp.
His eyes landed on the mercenary’s corpse and stopped.
’’What am I going to do with you?’’
Roderic slowly made his way over to the corpse, his eyes narrowing.
The mercenary lay face-first in the dirt, completely motionless.
His own Azure Hook Blade still sat deep inside the back of the man’s skull.
’’I’m going to need that back,’’ he muttered.
Planting a foot against the corpse’s back, he grabbed the hilt and pulled his blade free.
He stared at it in disgust.
The blood had already begun to harden.
’’For 250 Throne Coins, this material better be resistant to rust,’’ he mumbled, shaking his head.
Then his gaze shifted back to the mercenary’s corpse.
There was not a hint of guilt, pity, or fear in his eyes.
Death wasn’t something he was unfamiliar with, whether from his memories of Earth or those of the previous Roderic.
If anything, he was simply irritated that he’d been caught by surprise in the first place.
’’It won’t be long,’’ he said, kicking the corpse toward the river. ’’Then I’ll send your employer to accompany you in hell.’’
There was no doubt in his mind about who could’ve done this.
The only people who stood to benefit from killing him right now were his stepmother, Margaret Deres, and her family.
And sooner or later, they would all meet their end.
