Chapter 13: 13 Preparations

Lara POV

Vienna was a busty, dark-haired woman dressed in a black bodysuit. She stared at me for a long moment, her lip curling, dark eyes filled with venom that made the back of my neck prickle.

I was supposed to let this woman strip search me?

Maybe I would have been better off with one of the male guards with their eyes stuck to my boobs.

"Strip."

I didn’t move.

"Unless you want me to do it for you?"

She arched her brow and took a step towards me. I eyed her up: solid muscle. No softness anywhere. I was unlikely to win against her in a fight.

"Fine. Let’s get this over with," I huffed.

I pulled off my clothes quickly and then spread my arms.

"Go ahead."

Latex gloved hands patted down my bare skin, down my arms and legs, not lingering.

"Turn around."

Then:

"Bend over."

And the cherry on top of the sundae:

"Spread your legs."

I gritted my teeth. Cold fingers thrust in and out of me, not bothering remotely to be gentle.

"Ow! Do you fucking mind?"

The moment I jerked away from her, Vienna’s hand locked around my wrist like a steel cuff. One sharp twist and I was pinned face-first against the wall, her body pressed close, her strength terrifying in how effortless it felt.

"Shit," I muttered.

I wished briefly that she could teach me that skill, because the woman was not so much bigger or taller than me. But she moved like someone who had broken men twice her size.

I had won a street fight or two when my back was up against the wall, but my understanding of combat was basically, go straight for a kick to the balls before my opponent could react.

"Don’t think you can attract more attention from Mr Sagres by making a fuss," she said coldly, taking off the latex gloves and throwing them away.

I pulled my shirt over my head again with a sharp tug.

"Excuse me?"

She curled her lip and laughed, a short, mocking sound.

"You whores are all the same," she muttered under her breath.

Who died and crawled up her ass? I narrowed my eyes.

"Do you think Mr Sagres should be fucking you instead?" I asked blandly.

Vienna’s head whipped around. Those dark eyes narrowed, brows pulling tight.

Ouch, did I hit a nerve?

Usually, I would say a lovely lady who could kick men’s asses was far too good for Emmanuel Sagres. Scratch that, any woman was too good for the man whose crimes had destroyed countless families. But why was she being a bitch to me rather than taking it up with him? She could have this job instead any time.

"Quiet," she said icily. "You know nothing, little whore."

She grabbed me by the back of my collar and marched me along to the next humiliation of the day. The medical exam.

----

The medical exam was even more over the top. The clinic looked like that kind of private, high end space that I had never set foot in. The closest I’d come to medical care in years was the free clinic near The Red Door, where the nurses always had shadows under their eyes and the painkillers were always out of stock.

This place was all gleaming, state-of-the-art equipment, neatly ordered shelves, and brisk, busy doctors and nurses.

It made me itch to swipe a box of painkillers just out of habit, but the knowledge that the clinic belonged to Emmanuel Sagres made me keep my hands to myself.

I didn’t want to get murdered for something as stupid as that.

"So what have we got here? Miss Lara Brinson. Twenty-one-years-old. Blood Type AB, no history of allergies to medication–" The doctor read off his computer screen in the tone of a television presenter as I sat in the plastic chair across the desk, legs crossed. He had straw blond hair in a neat side-part, with a name tag that read ’Dr. Larinson, M.D.’

"How do you know all that already?"

I narrowed my eyes, my brows knitting into a deeper frown as he spoke.

"Your medical history was transferred from your previous clinic," said the doctor, waving a hand dismissively. "But you need the full check up nevertheless. You have not had a health check in over a year, tut tut."

He lifted his eyebrows, disapproval radiating from under his blue clinical mask.

"I’ve not been sick," I muttered. "And I’ve been to the clinic to renew my birth control."

"You need a more comprehensive pre-natal health check."

"A–" I blinked. "A pre-natal check?"

The printer whirled, spitting out a printed table of examination types that the doctor immediately started scribbling on with a ballpoint pen.

"Start with the blood test - Room 2A. Then the X-ray, Room 7C. Nurses will direct you if you don’t know where to go. Come back here when you’re done. Ta!"

He turned away.

"Wait a minute," I said. "What is a pre-natal check?"

Dr. Larinson sighed.

"It’s to ensure that you are in good health to conceive a child, no underlying medical conditions, genetic risks, or infectious diseases that could pass on to the baby," he said slowly.

I paused for a moment.

Hmmm.

"Actually I’m not in such good health."

I coughed. I put my hand behind my waist and winced.

"I’ve always had back pains. Irregular periods. Probably not going to be a good time for conception–"

The doctor stared at me for a moment and chuckled.

"Are you trying to ’sick note’ your way out of a deal with the devil?"

I dropped my hand from my waist.

"So you know about the deal," I said.

"Well, duh."

Dr. Larinson shrugged, making a gesture in my direction as if to remind me of the very fact that I was sitting in his office.

"Everyone you come into contact with has to be cleared. Now, and especially after you’re pregnant."

I nodded thoughtfully.

"So you know Emmanuel Sagres well? You’re close to him? You’re, what, his personal physician?"

"That’s confidential."

"Oh, but you’re going to share my confidential medical information with him, right?"

"He’s the boss."

"But don’t you think this is crazy?" I implored. "You’re a doctor, hey? Shouldn’t you advise him to have all of these checks done before he picks a damn...breeder...rather than picking a random girl like me?"

Dr. Larinson shook his head.

"Are you kidding? I’m not here to tell the boss what to do. I’m here to make sure what he wants gets done. So you better hope your results come back in perfect health, or it’ll be my job to fix that."

He turned away again.

I stood still, my mind still working furiously, trying to find an angle.

"Do I need to call Vienna back to accompany you?" he asked.

"No!" I snatched up the printed list. "I can find Room 2A just fine."

I slammed the door on my way out.

It was hours of being bounced from room to room before I brought the results back to Dr. Larinson.

He read through my much thicker medical file, muttering words to his nurse, too fast and jumbled for me to keep up. Something about fertility or sexual health.

I said, "What was that? Is something wrong with me?"

"No, no. Your reproductive function is normal. Congratulations!"

I smiled tightly. It didn’t feel particularly like a win right now.

"What birth control have you been using?"

"The pill."

I always used a condom with my clients, but I took the pill as well just in case.

The doctor nodded, typing something onto his computer.

"You should be capable of pregnancy within a few weeks, now that you have stopped taking the pill."
