Chapter 11: 11 I Robbed a Bank, Okay?

Lara POV

I couldn’t deal with all the questions right now.

"Listen." I held up a hand and they both stopped, which was its own sort of miracle. "I can’t explain everything right now. I need you to trust me and I need you to move it quickly."

"You cannot just drag me out of a card game and tell me to pack and not explain—"

I ignored mom’s screeching voice, focusing on the priorities.

I pulled out the card burning a hole into my pocket. My card, which I had already transferred all the money into at the ATM. I took Chloe’s hand, and folded her fingers over it. All my years of savings, plus the fortune that Emmanuel Sagres just gave me.

I looked into her wide, terrified blue eyes and held her hand tight.

"That’s for Clarinton Academy," I said. "All of it. Enough for all four years and accommodation and whatever else you need. Wire them the tuition first thing tomorrow morning. Got it?"

"What?! Lara, no—"

Chloe’s hand was already open, trying to give it back. I shoved it back toward her, harder. The card pressed into her palm.

"You need to guard this card with your life, I mean it. Keep it down the back of your pants if you have to. And under absolutely no circumstance—" I flicked my eyes to mum for half a second "—do you let anyone else take care of it for you. Are we clear?"

"Lara! I told you that you don’t have to–"

"We have it now, so you might as well use it. Put it away now." Chloe was no match for me in the push and shove game. I soon managed to shove it into her pocket.

"Where did you get this?"

"Where did you get that kind of money?" Mom said at the same time.

"I robbed a fucking bank," I said, rolling my eyes.

"Lara!" Chloe exclaimed.

I threw up my hands. How was I supposed to explain this while keeping the actual, crazy truth confidential?

"No, you’re right. It was actually Mr Malone’s pawn shop on Needle Street."

"Lara, be serious!"

"I’m joking. Okay, I dug up an old tomb. Pharaonic curse situation, the Feds will be after me inside a week, best to stay moving."

I quickly moved on before I had to invent any more outlandish sources for my unexpected windfall.

"Listen up, mom. Get the coach tonight. Go to Jean Knightley in South Hartlow and tell her Lara sent you, and she’ll rent you a flat for a good price. Do not come back. Don’t look for me. And for fuck’s sake, do not ask any more questions."

Mom’s expression did something strange. All of a sudden, the wrinkles in her face were much more prominent, and it didn’t help any with her looks.

"I thought we was done with this life when Sammy went to jail," she said roughly.

"Lara?!" Chloe stared at me in disbelief. "What does that mean? Are you...are you involved with the mafia?"

"I can neither confirm nor deny and oh god, please shut up and leave."

I put both hands on my sister’s shoulders and turned her bodily toward the front door

If she asked any more questions, she might come too close to the truth. And I really was not in a state of mind to come up with a better cover story, especially not to the people who knew all the tells in my cover story technique.

"Coat," I said, pulling hers from the hook and holding it out. "Bag. Coach station is on Merchant Street, you know where that is, it’s two buses or fifteen minutes in a cab and you’ve got plenty of money for the cab."

I pressed the coat into her arms. "Take mum. Look after her. Don’t let her near the card."

"I am standing right here," mom said.

"I know you are." I looked at her over Chloe’s head. "Go, mom. Please."

"But Lara," Chloe said, her voice turning high. "What about you? Why aren’t you coming with us?"

"I’ll come soon," I said, with more confidence than I felt. "There’s just something I have to do first. A job. It won’t take that long, a year, maybe."

Chloe’s brow furrowed in concern.

"An illegal job?"

"Stop asking, Chloe," said Mom. Her lips were set into a thin line, looking more clear-headed than I had seen her in a long time. "Sounds like the kind of thing, the littler we know the better."

"Exactly," I nodded. "Now go, you’ll miss the coach."

Mom dragged Chloe away, out of the house and down the path.

– –

Once the house was empty, I threw myself down into a kitchen chair and put my head into my hands.

Step 1. Get Chloe and mom out, done.

Step 2.

Step 2...?

What did Emmanuel Sagres say again?

Settle your affairs. I’ll send a car for you in the morning.

Well, I guess that I should pack too.

I started throwing clothes into an overnight bag. Toothbrush. Phone charger. Hair brush.

What, exactly, do you pack for being a personal breeder to the mafia king?

Is he even going to let me wear clothes?

I wasn’t exactly going to bring my own sex toys. He could pay for those.

Then again, who knew how many other whores he might have used his toys on?

I threw my pink bullet vibrator into the bag.

At that point, I knew that I had been awake for far too long and the events of the past twenty-four hours were truly getting to me.

I changed into my threadbare pajamas and crawled into bed. It still smelled like Chloe’s coconut-scented shampoo.

For a while, I cycled through emotions like it was a ferris wheel.

I thought that I was going to have a baby for some rich, handsome stranger who would raise the child in luxury. I thought I was okay with that.

But there was no way in hell I wanted to have a baby for Emmanuel Sagres.

From tomorrow, my only job in life would be to spread my legs for my worst enemy.

Oh, God.

But even in the worst of situations, there could be a silver lining.

Think about it this way.

Never before could I have had the opportunity to get so close to Emmanuel Sagres. He was more of a distant ghost with a name, a scary story that parents used to threaten their kids into behaving. Not a real person.

Now I would get close to the human being behind the mafia king mask. And humans have weaknesses. In fact, I would be close to him in a man’s most vulnerable moment, no clothes between us.

Any man would let his guard down after a really good orgasm.

What’s more—

He didn’t understand me. He underestimated me.

Men always do.

If I played my cards right, I could find the weakness in the mafia king and get my revenge.
