Chapter 26: Holes and Circles

Dion didn’t have to use much strength to hoist himself up the edge of the wall, through the broken window.

Once he had brought his feet to the ground and the blood no longer needed to serve its purpose, he brought it back to himself, wrapping it around his wrist.

He had largely consumed all of the mana that had been used to maintain the third wrist band of blood, and so he urged it to combine with the second one, bringing them together to form one that he added a little more mana to, allowing it to solidify well.

Glass crunched beneath his shoes, and his eyes slightly widened at the sight of the four people that had been shot accurately through their heads with one or two shots being used to kill them.

’A family of four?’ He wondered briefly, ’No... One should have been a friend of the parents... Maybe they had come over for dinner tonight?’

There was a mother and father, then another woman, about the mothers age, and a younger boy who looked to have just entered his teens. Their corpses were sprawled over the living room floor that he had entered.

Blood had spattered across the walls and especially pooled over the floor. From the smell and they way that the blood looked, he knew, without having any kind of forensic knowledge that they should have been killed a long while ago.

Dion walked deeper into the room, glancing around at the dinner table with cold, half eaten food laid over it. Then at the corpses once more, though this time only briefly.

’The person might have left the building by now if this is the case. They might potentially be awakened, and may have been a police officer.’

Even though he said this, he knew that perhaps once more that was only his own thinking that had brought about the conclusion. The individual could have easily remained in the building. So, before he did anything else, while he was still in a somewhat heightened state, he used his senses to listen in on the floor for any more zombies.

’Nothing... But there are heartbeats in the building.’

Be that as it may, he didn’t want to have himself believe that just because he couldn’t hear them then there couldn’t have been something that might threaten him were he to take the time to go bath. So, he walked himself over to the door, blood squelching beneath his shoes.

The door itself had scratches and a few indents on it, from the zombies having tried to escape. He opened it gradually as he deliberately gave attention towards calming himself. If the person that could shoot so well was still in the building if they saw his eyes, they could very easily decide not to wait for him to spin his feasible lie.

’I really don’t want to find out if I can survive a bullet hole through the head.’

Dion thus only walked himself out of the room, into the hallway once he was sure that his eyes had returned to a normal human shape.

The hallway was strewn with zombie corpses sparsely from its back to front. There were at least just over a dozen only at first glance when he looked down both ends.

Here, unlike in his own apartment building, there were rooms across from each other, and all of the doors on the other side, as well as those on his side had been closed. Within them there were a number of heartbeats, with some of them agitated. They should have woken up because of the damage that he had caused.

Nevertheless, a part of Dion considered if he might be able to meet the person that had shot the zombies within this apartment and throughout this hall. However, that was only a thought to the back of his mind. right now, he had other priorities.

Dion walked himself towards the end of the hall where he had seen the staircase was and he tried to listen in again, though this time, warily and without enhancing his senses too much.

If he did then his eyes might change, and he didn’t want to bet that the people who’s hearts were currently racing in those other apartments were not associated to the shooter, or the shooter themselves. He wasn’t yet confident that he could very swiftly control the change of his eyes, silently hoping that there might come a time when he was able to use his senses and abilities without the damn things changing.

’I don’t hear any zombies down there nearby. It should be clear enough for now.’

So, he turned back towards the room he had broken into. He knew from what he had heard that there were zombies on the lower floors, but thankfully not on these two immediate ones. Thus, Dion shut the door behind himself, and before heading over to the bathroom, he walked over to the couch.

In his travels, since he had fully recovered his mana, he had spent somewhere between five to ten percent of his mana. It was a frustrating estimate that he had made.

Part of his brain had been trying to work out how he had used so much, and really the only conclusion was that it was a result of both his lack of precise control as well as what the system judged to be low mana, so in part he didn’t couldn’t justify his complaints.

That being said, for what he wanted to do, he didn’t know how much he would need, so he chose to replenish it to full.

He took out the gnoll blood that he had preserved with a flash of red, from his treasury. His attention simmered on it for a several seconds, where his jaw tensed, and then he took a breath to calm himself.

Then he drank about a half’s of it to bring himself back to full mana.

It was an unreasonable amount that he needed, honestly.

The bottle disappeared, and he quickly, without allowing himself to linger on the satisfaction of it, called for his Vassal Summoning.

The red circle, mixed with black and those strange intricate runes crafted themselves out of nothing ahead of him then.

A wind brushed through the room, especially colder than anything that he had felt. But, it felt familiar, so, pleasantly familiar.

And from a gurgling mass of darkness, he watched as a head of white hair began to emerge.

"Good evening, My Lord. I trust that the night has graced you well?"
