Chapter 15: Proof by Boiling

Leon began with the pots.

The Reed River people had six suitable clay vessels at the spring camp. Two for drinking water, one for medicine, two for food, and one for something nobody wanted to describe through gestures.

Leon moved that one a very long way away.

Nayra watched him reorganise her camp with the expression of a woman allowing a stranger to demonstrate exactly how wrong he was prepared to be.

He drew the process in the mud instead of explaining it.

Cloudy water into the first pot, and left alone.

Clear water off the top, above the settled sediment, into a second vessel through folded cloth and fibre.

Filtered water into a third pot, boiled, cooled under a cover, then moved into a clean storage jar that no dirty hand and no dirty cup would ever enter.

Nayra understood the separation immediately.

Then she changed it.

Instead of pouring from the first pot and stirring the sediment back through the whole thing, she pushed a hollow reed in above the mud line and started a siphon by drawing on it. Leon caught her wrist before she swallowed any, and she gave him a look that suggested she had been doing this since before he was born and had not yet died of it.

The method moved the clear upper layer without remixing the bottom. It was better than his.

He stared at the reed for a moment.

Nayra raised one eyebrow.

"Your patent," Leon said, "is going to be extremely annoying."

She did not understand the words. The eyebrow remained correct.

Tala collected dry fuel from under an overhanging rock while two others shaped a small clay hearth. Leon specified a narrow firebox with a controlled air opening. In ordinary air the design would have burned efficiently.

The atmosphere here was 23.4 percent oxygen.

He remembered the number. He had underestimated what the number felt like.

The tinder caught before his hand was fully clear. Flame went through the dry grass, into the split wood, and up above the pot in a single bright sheet that made a sound like tearing cloth.

Leon reached for the fuel.

Tala hit his wrist away and threw a slab of wet clay across the air opening. Nayra dropped a flat stone over the top. The flame collapsed into smoke.

Everyone looked at Leon.

He wrote a new word in his notebook.

Too much.

A useful phrase, applicable to engineering, to money, and to Leon.

He rebuilt the hearth with a smaller opening, less fuel, and more thermal mass around the pot, and the second fire behaved.

Water started to heat.

Nayra put a hand flat against the outside of the vessel and shook her head. There was a hairline crack running up from the base.

He had chosen a pot made for cool storage, not for repeated heating.

She replaced it with a darker vessel whose clay held crushed fired material and fine sand — temper, to spread the thermal stress — and warmed it gradually beside the flame before she centred it over the hearth.

Local expert. Again. He was going to have to stop being surprised by this at some point.

The water came to a rolling boil.

Leon held it there long enough to build a rule that could survive without a clock: when the whole surface moves and steam is coming off steadily, keep going for the length of one familiar work song.

A woman started singing.

The melody was simple and low, and others came in on the repeated line, and by the third repetition two of them were adding a handclap that was not in the original.

Leon had intended to establish a timing standard.

They turned it into culture inside thirty seconds.

He covered the pot and moved it to a clean raised mat. Nayra marked the storage jar with a stripe of pale clay so nobody could confuse it with untreated water.

While the second pot heated, Leon pointed at the fire and asked for the word.

"Esh," Tala said.

He wrote it down beside the one he had learned for water two days earlier, in a reed shelter, from a young man who turned out to be named after it.

Aru got there first.

He was flat on his back with a splinted leg and he had been listening to every word anybody said all afternoon, and he put the two together and pointed at the marked storage jar.

Esh-aru. Ember-water.

Nayra repeated it. Then the woman who had been singing repeated it. By the time the jar was full it had stopped being a joke and had started being the name of the thing.

Leon wrote it down and left it alone, because the word was better than anything he would have built. Water that has been through fire. It said exactly what it was, it could be taught to a child in four seconds, and nobody would ever need to be told about microorganisms in order to use it correctly.

He looked at the boy who had invented it, currently trying to reach a ration bar with a stick.

"Congratulations," Leon said. "You have just written the first line of a public health code."

Aru did not understand a single word, and accepted the compliment anyway.

Dirty side. Clean side. Separate cups. No hands inside the storage jar.

The rules were considerably less impressive than a membrane filter, and considerably more important, because every part of them could be rebuilt by anyone who had watched it done once.

He prepared microscope slides from four stages.

Untreated seep water: suspended debris, algae, and a great many things moving under their own power.

Settled and fibre-filtered: better. Still busy.

Charcoal-filtered: better again.

Boiled: no visible movement in the sample he examined.

He did not call it sterile. The sample was tiny, the microscope was limited, and recontamination was one careless cup away.

Nayra looked through every slide. Then she made each adult in the camp look as well, one at a time, and stood behind them while they did it.

Aru argued from his carrying frame until she let him crawl close enough.

His face at the eyepiece went completely still.

Afterwards he looked at the ordinary cup of water sitting beside him as though it had betrayed a personal confidence.

Leon understood that exactly. The first time the invisible becomes visible, reality does not feel more trustworthy. It feels less.

Nayra went back to the patients while the next pot heated. Small repeated amounts, rather than letting them drink until they vomited it all back. Leon mixed oral rehydration solution from clean water, salt, and measured sugar out of his rations.

He knew the approximate ratio. Approximate was not good enough, because too much salt makes dehydration worse and he was about to hand this recipe to people who would still be using it after he was dead. He got the gram scale out of the tool kit, weighed it properly against the reference he had memorised — half a level measure of salt to six of sugar in a litre of water — and then translated the proportions into local measures. One level shell of salt. Twelve of crushed sweet root. One standard jar of water.

Nayra tasted it and added more sweet root, then showed him that its moisture content changed with the season. Leon let her move that number and would not let her touch the other one. The sugar was forgiving. The salt was not, and a shell too many of it would take a dehydrated child in the wrong direction faster than the illness would.

So they built two formulas. The modern emergency mixture, while the supplies lasted. And a local one, calibrated by taste, by vessel volume, and by how the patient responded.

The child kept the second small cup down.

Nayra waited before giving another. Leon nodded approval, and then understood that his approval was not a component of the system. She was watching breathing, alertness, pulse, and the return of moisture to the mouth. When one of the sick adults demanded a whole jar, she refused and divided it, and absorbed his anger without any visible interest in it.

The process mattered as much as the formula. Clean water in a dirty vessel is dirty water. A correct mixture given too fast comes straight back up. And a method only Leon understood would evaporate the first time he walked out of camp.

So he had Aru repeat the whole sequence in gestures.

Aru deliberately reversed the clean and dirty jars. Nayra hit the carrying frame with a spoon. On the second attempt he got it right, still grinning.

Teaching had begun the moment mockery turned into a test.

That was progress. It was not a cure.

By late afternoon the rain reached the leaves above them.

The first drops were warm and widely spaced. Then the sky opened.

Water sheeted off the limestone, went into the crack above the seep, and turned the collection basin brown inside two minutes.

Leon looked down at the river.

Its surface had come up against a pale mark on the bank. Floating branches were moving faster than they had been an hour ago. The gathering point stood above ordinary water level — but there was a line of flattened reeds further up the slope showing where the river had been before, at least once, within living memory of the reeds.

And the camp sat on the inside of a bend.

Bad geometry. Flow velocity increases around the curve. Debris collects against the bank. Half a metre more and the lower path was gone. A full metre and the spring station became an island with sick people on it.

He pointed uphill. "Danger. Water. Move."

Tala looked at the river and shook her head. Her people had seen storms. The bank had held before.

So Leon drew the bend in the mud, and then drew the arrows. He showed water striking the outer bank and curling back into their lower path. He stacked three stones at the current water level and moved a fourth one up.

Nayra was not watching the drawing. She was watching the debris.

A branch hit the bank below them hard enough to break in half.

She gave the order.

The camp moved. Sick people, clean jars, medicine, and the microscope went up to a limestone terrace twenty metres higher. Leon and Tala went back for the last pot while the rain cut visibility down to a grey curtain.

The river reached the lower path before they climbed back.

Brown water went through the spring station. The reed channel disappeared. Two empty jars spun against the rocks and burst.

The Sarcosuchus did not appear.

The river had become large enough on its own.

On the terrace they rebuilt the hearth under an overhang. Leon set stones to protect the smaller flame from the wind. Tala had already cut drainage channels before he thought to suggest them.

Nayra went through the patients again. The older woman’s pulse was still fast. The child was exhausted and had not vomited for nearly an hour. Aru’s wound was clean and warm, with no spreading redness.

No miracle. No death.

For one day, that was a result worth defending.

The rain went on into the dark. They sat around a controlled fire drinking water that had come through a process every person present now understood well enough to run without him.

Tala pointed at Leon. Then at the pot. Then she used a word he did not have.

Aru translated it in gesture — both hands apart like walls, then brought together.

Builder.

Leon repeated it. "Varu."

Tala nodded.

Leon Varu.

Not a surname. Not yet. A description of what he had done that day, which was, he was beginning to understand, how every name here started.

Nayra was looking east, where the river had disappeared behind the rain. She said something to Tala, and they argued quietly. Aru interrupted twice and was ignored both times with real professional consistency.

Eventually Tala turned to him.

She pointed east. Then she drew many people under a roof.

Retha. The Reed River settlement.

Nayra tapped the microscope case, then the water pot, then Leon’s chest.

They were taking him to the village.

Not as a guest. Not as a prisoner.

As a dangerous instrument nobody had yet decided how to hold.
