Chapter 304: The Cruel Witch in the Flames
The maggot-people’s movements stiffened. Bestial, mournful wails escaped them. And then— “GROOOOAAAAAR————!!!” A more berserk, more furious roar erupted from the depths of the street!
This time, it wasn’t a psychic attack. It was a direct, savage counterstrike! The maggot-people, as if driven utterly mad, abandoned the pretense of humanoid shape. One after another, their bodies began to violently convulse and swell. And then—
Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! The sound of balloons bursting, one after another, in rapid succession. The maggot-people were detonating themselves! Their bloated, pallid bodies exploded, dissolving into countless smaller maggots—white, thumb-sized, writhing things!
They poured out from every shadowed corner of the street, from every crevice. They converged, merging into a nauseating, skin-crawling sea of maggots—a heaving ocean of white, ceaselessly writhing, tangling, crushing against each other!
And that grotesque ocean began to form waves. Not waves of water—but waves composed of countless squirming maggots, cresting over two meters high!
The wave surged, aimed straight at Pandora, crashing down with obliterating force! The stench of decay in the air intensified tenfold in an instant!
Pandora watched the oncoming tsunami of pale worms, and for the first time, her brow truly furrowed. A wave of visceral revulsion surged through her.
Against a tactic like this, she had absolutely no intention of simply toughing it out. In the next heartbeat, her silhouette vanished from where it stood.
The churning white wave slammed down onto the spot she’d just occupied, swallowing the shredded remains of the maggot-people into its depths.
………………
“Miss Pandora! Miss Pandora! Where are you?! Help! Help me! P-Please, help meeeee!!!” Miss Anomaly’s shrieking, tear-laced voice rang out from the far end of the street. She was clinging to an old-fashioned cast-iron lamppost for dear life. The lamp had long gone dark, its housing smeared with a coat of sticky, dark-red filth.
She looked like a terrified koala, arms and legs wrapped in a death-grip around the freezing metal pole, hanging about three meters above the ground. And directly beneath her... was him.
The silent Gunman. The one who never spoke, never stopped hunting. He, too, had grabbed hold of this very same lamppost—just a bit lower than her, at a height of roughly two meters.
Which meant... the surging ocean of white maggots that had nearly drowned the entire street was already crawling up his body.
Countless pale worms wriggling up his legs, swarming over his torso, burrowing into the folds of his black trench coat.
They bored in, and they bored out, leaving hideous holes behind.

The Gunman’s already rigid movements grew even more sluggish. His body began to “melt” at a visible rate, consumed and decomposed by the maggots from the inside out.
It didn’t take long.
The Gunman’s hand—the one gripping the lamppost—loosened.
His entire body toppled into the churning white ocean below.
Not even a ripple.
Just the maggots in that patch of sea churning with what seemed like a little extra excitement.
Then silence.
As if he’d never been there at all.
Miss Anomaly stared down at the shifting sea of white worms below, then at the patch of sea where the Gunman had just vanished. Raw, choking terror flooded her heart.
This time, she wasn’t scared of being killed by the Gunman. She was scared of this. Of being eaten alive by these writhing, disgusting things.
She was almost starting to regret it. If the Gunman had killed her—a bullet through the head—at least she’d have died clean. Quick. Over in an instant.
But falling into this maggot ocean... the thought alone made her body tremble uncontrollably. The more she thought, the paler her face grew.
She squeezed the freezing lamppost even tighter, her knuckles bone-white. But the harder she tried not to fall, the more everything seemed to conspire against her.
The surface of the lamppost—she didn’t know when it started—was now secreting a slick film of dark-red slime.
Miss Anomaly’s grip was slipping. Millimeter by millimeter. Uncontrollably. Slipping.
She could feel it so clearly—the slow, inexorable slide downward! She might, maybe, perhaps... this time... really die?
Despair, like a gnawing parasite, coiled through every inch of her body.
“What are you thinking, little one?” A familiar voice came from somewhere diagonally above her. Miss Anomaly whipped her head up, her tear-blurred eyes straining to focus. “Miss Pandora!?”
Following the sound, she finally spotted her—standing at the edge of the roof of that dessert shop they’d briefly rested in earlier. Pandora.
Her figure was a bit disheveled now. Stains of ichor clung to the hem of her skirt, strands of her hair falling loose.
The dessert shop below her was also flooded, writhing with countless white maggots. They were piling on top of each other, climbing higher and higher in a frenzied wave, mere inches from reaching the roof’s edge, from reaching Pandora’s feet.
But Pandora, unlike her, showed not a shred of fear. Instead, her face bore something Miss Anomaly could not comprehend at all. A... smile.
Miss Anomaly didn’t understand. How could Pandora smile at a time like this? She herself certainly couldn’t. She was crying so hard even snot bubbles were forming—and she couldn’t even wipe them away! Letting go meant falling!
But then, the next instant, she understood. Pandora raised her right hand. Thumb and middle finger met—and rubbed together. Snap!
A crisp, clean snap.
And then— FWOOOOOOOOOOSH————!!!! Fire! An eruption of fire!
Crimson flames licked with eerie, unearthly violet surged upward like a volcanic eruption, exploding from the interior of the dessert shop, from every corner of its rooftop!
The fire seemed alive. It kissed the walls, devoured the wooden frame, yet left Pandora entirely untouched.
And it lunged—hungrily, greedily—for the white maggots!
The moment the maggots met the flames, a sizzling, crackling hiss erupted. Their bodies convulsed, shriveled, popped, and turned to drifting ash!
The fire spread with horrifying speed. In the span of a blink, the buildings along the entire food street were wrapped in a raging, roaring inferno!
And there, in the heart of the flames, stood the girl at the roof’s edge—her eyes reflecting the blazing light in brilliant, dazzling sparks.
She looked like a cruel witch, born straight from a fiery hell.
Countless maggots, trapped in the unquenchable agony of that unearthly fire, twisted and thrashed madly before dissolving into clouds of drifting ash.
The flames lit half the street in blazing crimson. And they lit Miss Anomaly’s tear-streaked, shock-frozen face.
