Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Emergency Quest
"Oh? It’s you, Erness."
Professor Erlina, the one responsible for the support class, immediately recognized her most cheerful and accomplished student.
"Hehe~ helloo~"
Seeing Erness perfectly fine, showing no sign of any distress whatsoever, made Professor Erlina smile with relief and satisfaction.
"Are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere? Let me take a look."
Then, before he could even register it, Professor Erlina had already closed the distance and was carefully cupping Erness’s face, handling her as if she were something incredibly precious.
Was that genuine concern for Erness?
"Ah... Thank goodness that gorgeous face of yours didn’t get damaged."
It seemed to lean more toward someone obsessed with appearances. Professor Erlina, a woman with pink hair and a mature look about her, genuinely had some kind of fixation on how people looked.
She hugged Erness, her expression melting completely.
"Aigoo... Why are you so pretty? How can someone even be born with this kind of beauty?"
Watching Erness just giggle adorably, acting like any ordinary girl, left Eiros genuinely at a loss for words.
Then, right then, a faint tremor shook one of the room’s walls, making everyone turn, followed by a scream.
"UWAAAGHHH!!!"
Explosion—!!
An explosion erupted, tearing a sizable hole clean through the wall. There, emerging from the dust with a grim, exhausted expression, was Valkas, apparently having avoided getting caught.
"Oh... Look at that, we ended up in exactly the right spot."
Then, peeking out from behind him was Alen.
"Oh? What technique was that? Incredible, haha. You’d make a great human drill."
"Is that supposed to be an insult?"
"Of course not."
Then, Valkas and Alen’s gazes landed on Eiros. All three of them stared at each other for a moment, frozen in awkward silence.
Eiros stayed quiet, unable to believe those two had actually managed to escape the black slime. Meanwhile, the two of them seemed distracted by something else entirely...
"Insane! What the hell is that sword?! Why is it so huge and... hideous?"
Meanwhile, Alen...
"Truly an extraordinary support role. My respects."
He clapped, deadpan, nodding occasionally.
Then, arriving from a spot slightly further away from the laboratory was a large-bodied student.
His face looked grim and flat.
It was Godon.
Staring at each of them as if he’d just found his worst enemy of all time.
"You people, you traitors. I swear, I’ll—"
Punch—!!
"Uwagh?!"
"What’s this big guy even saying?"
His words were suddenly cut off by a girl appearing out of nowhere. It was Lovia, her face genuinely looking like a mess.
Godon winced and glared at Lovia.
"You guys abandoned me! That’s basically betrayal!?"
Hearing that, Lovia turned her face away, a fixed smile plastered on it.
"It’s not like that..."
"Then what?"
"...Um, how about three chickens?"
Godon’s face froze, and the darkness slowly faded from his expression. Still, he shook his head.
"I wo—"
"Five chickens."
"F-five?"
Whatever resolve he’d built up crumbled under the sheer power of fried chicken. He swallowed hard, then sold off his pride for the price of:
"Seven pieces of chicken."
"Deal!"
Godon’s face lit up instantly.
"If you ever need someone to betray again, just call me. The rate’ll be higher next time, obviously."
And just like that, they all regrouped together. Except for two people missing, which made Eiros ask:
"Where’s the Saintess and that supervisor?"
"Ah, we haven’t seen them."
"Same here, we didn’t either."
Hearing that made Eiros’s heart pound hard. He fell silent, scanning his surroundings for any sign of the Saintess.
Finding no one, Eiros felt a deep sense of dread crawling across his face.
’The quest hasn’t failed yet. The Saintess isn’t dead yet.’
He steadied his thoughts, forcing himself to stay positive.
Right then, the professors had already gathered everyone together. Praising this and that, expressing how relieved they were that it wasn’t just Eiros and Erness who’d managed to keep their heads in a situation like this.
That was when Eiros suddenly saw a pale blue screen appear before him, freezing him in place.
[EMERGENCY QUEST]
Objective: Save the Saintess and the Imperial twins.
Failure: The World Will Head Toward Ruin.
His face went completely rigid, cold sweat crawling across his skin.
’What? What... Where? How?’
From that moment, Eiros’s mind started racing at full speed, spiraling into a chaotic mess of his own thoughts.
His heart pounded harder than he’d ever heard it before. Everything around him grew increasingly hazy, until he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"...You’re looking pale again. Seems like you really are feeling sick."
It was Erness, watching him with an expression completely still, no trace of a smile.
But that lasted only a moment before that sweet, attentive smile returned to her face once more.
"Did something happen, darling?"
After looking at Erness.
A particular thought crossed his mind.
In this situation, where he had no idea where the Saintess or the Imperial twins even were, wasn’t Erness the only one who could actually help him?
Given that Erness was the only one capable of teleporting around and exploring with ease.
But could he actually ask her for help?
Could he trust Erness?
"I’m your girlfriend, you know? Tell me, don’t just bottle it up. I’ll definitely help you."
Erness whispered into his ear.
’Right... if it’s Erness... she’d definitely help me, at least given that she currently has no intention of killing me, since she knows it’d be pointless anyway, right?’
"So, how about you tell me what’s actually got you looking this pale?"
Eiros bit his lip.
Whether he was thinking rationally or not, in the end, he decided to ask Erness for help.
And the result?
Erness smiled at him. A smile so unusual that, strangely enough, it made Eiros start questioning his own decision.
But well...
"I’m getting a reward for this, right?"
"...."
"Don’t get so stiff about it. I’m not asking for anything difficult, just a date, just the two of us. How about it?"
***
"You really are stubborn, you know."
In a dark cave, far from all that slime. The supervisor stood there, his body covered in wounds.
Blood seeped out everywhere, whether from his head or the rest of his body. His left arm had been twisted at an unnatural angle, one eye completely blind, and he’d started coughing, spitting up blood.
The healing artifact the Saintess had given him, still on his wrist, had already stopped working.
Standing right in front of him was a man with neatly combed-back hair. His pupils were pitch black, his body wrapped in a pristine black suit.
He wore white gloves, biting down on one to straighten it out. His body showed no real signs of injury, just a few parts of his outfit looking slightly disheveled.
"Let them go."
The supervisor spoke weakly, his unfocused gaze fixed on the Imperial twins and the Saintess, their bodies pinned to the stone wall by a dense, blood-red ruby crystal.
"Why would I do that? It’s honestly strange, seeing you give me orders when I’m clearly the one with the upper hand here."
Biting down on his lip, he drew his axe, which now only sparked with faint blue lightning, weaker than before.
First, of course, he couldn’t let the man get any closer to the Saintess and the Imperial twins.
Because the moment the man closed the distance, his power could kill them all in an instant.
Second was the question of just how much longer he could actually buy time.
The supervisor’s heart pounded hard, his vision genuinely blurring. If he closed his eyes even once, he was certain he’d pass out right then and there.
Then... the moment he saw the man in front of him take one step forward. The supervisor didn’t hesitate for a second.
