Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Sorry, but I’m a support type
"GYAERRRHHHHH!!!"
"S-shut up! Bastard! Stop screaming!"
"UWAAAAAA?!!!"
Watching the chaos unfold, now that they were being chased by a monster whose head was as massive as the cave tunnel itself and hideously ugly to boot, Eiros felt his face drain of color from sheer terror.
’How did everything turn into such a mess?’
At first he’d thought everything would be fine once he finally joined up with Alen’s group. But nothing was going well at all.
That giant boulder pressed against the corner had turned out to be a sleeping monster. And the moment they’d all met up and started talking loudly, the thing had woken up.
"GYAAAHHH!!!"
Eiros bit his lip, feeling genuinely dizzy hearing Valkas scream, his face gone completely white.
He’d figured Valkas might struggle to run while carrying the unconscious supervisor on his back, but true to what you’d expect from a dragon, Valkas was incredibly strong.
Well, except for that screaming. He wished Valkas would do something about that.
"THIS IS INSANE! WHAT THE HELL?! I DON’T WANT THIS! WHY IS ITS FACE SO UGLY?!"
And, apparently, that answered the question of what exactly he was screaming about.
Baam—!! Baam—!! Baam—!!
An explosion!!
With an enormous face, and four arms sprouting from each side of its head, the monster was, in essence, a four-legged spider with a hideously ugly human face.
Its hands slammed into the cave walls with every stride, shaking the tunnel violently. Several other monsters even fled in terror, trying to get away from the ugly-faced beast.
Valkas, running with a look of pure trauma on his face, glanced at Lovia.
"Hey!"
"H-huh?! Hey! Damn it! You, what are you doing?!"
Lovia flinched as the unconscious supervisor’s body came flying straight at her. She scrambled to catch it, though it wasn’t heavy thanks to her Soul Essence.
She was about to curse Valkas out, but realized he’d already stopped running.
"Damn it! I can’t take this anymore, I’m going to smash that face in before I throw up!"
"Wow, is that guy insane?"
"No, don’t even ask, he’s genuinely lost it right now."
Godon and Lovia stopped running and decided to hold position several steps back, just to make sure Valkas was okay.
Eiros, the Saintess, and Alen did the same.
"Can you still run, Lady Saintess?"
"I’m fine, you know that well enough. Soul Essence really helps with stamina."
Hearing that, Eiros nodded slightly, then turned his gaze to Valkas.
Kwaang—!!
A long, pale white spear materialized in his hand, wrapped in white clouds dancing along its blade.
His red hair lifted slightly, as if a strong gust of wind had picked up right around him.
On his back, faintly visible beneath his torn uniform, the glow of his Stigmata flickered.
An aura of freedom, of open sky, something refreshing radiated from Valkas’s power. A moment later, Valkas raised his empty hand, thrusting it straight toward the monster.
"Eat this! You ugly bastard!"
Wrench—!! Crush—!!
Boom—!!
"...!"
"Wow?!"
For a moment, the monster’s body seemed to warp under some crushing pull of gravity, and the next instant, its face slammed straight into the ground, unleashing an explosion powerful enough to make the creature let out a whine that sounded like a woman’s scream, twisted and off-key.
"Ugh... Even its voice sounds terrifying."
Valkas muttered, his face scrunching up, before shaking his head, a question mark practically hanging over him.
"H-huh?!"
Of course, this wasn’t going to be that easy. The monster shrieked, a piercing sound, forcing itself back up, and Valkas gradually started losing control over his own power.
As his face darkened, he caught sight of a red sash sweeping past, followed by falling red rose petals. It carried a scent so distinct, so intoxicating.
Then, shooting straight toward the monster’s face was Lovia, wielding a thin rapier. Her expression, fully focused on the fight, revealed just how different she was from her usual self.
Especially with that red sash dancing around her blade and body.
Slash—!!
A deep cut tore straight through the monster’s face, right through its right eye, and at the exact same moment, the creature broke free from Valkas’s control.
Watching the monster open its enormous mouth, about to swallow Lovia whole, her entire rapier suddenly dissolved into thin rose petals.
Her red sash lengthened, wrapping around her body, and the motion wasn’t rough or brutal at all. Instead, it was a soft, natural kind of dance. The sash bound her and lifted her straight up toward the ceiling.
Lovia clenched her fist through empty air, and once again, amid a scatter of red rose petals, her rapier materialized back in her hand.
The monster’s mouth closed around nothing but the air where Lovia had been standing, and from above, she spun down gracefully, her speed enough to stir up a swirl of wind.
"Eat this."
She murmured lightly, then shot forward.
Slash—!! Slash—!!
"Ugh...! Its skin is so tough."
The cuts did leave deep wounds, but the problem was they weren’t nearly enough to bring the monster down.
Lovia was about to pull back for a moment, but she stopped short as the monster opened its mouth.
"Huh?"
At first, nothing seemed to happen, but then the effect became real. The monster began sucking in air, and along with it came a stench from its mouth so overpowering it made Lovia gag.
Before she even realized it, that powerful suction had torn through the air around her, dragging her body forward.
"D-damn it...!"
Luckily, Valkas was right there. The wind curved beside him, sending Lovia flying off to the side, slamming into a cluster of rocks instead.
Baam—!!
"Egh...!?"
Fortunately, it wasn’t fatal enough to keep her from getting back up properly. Across the way, she caught sight of Valkas flying through the air near the ceiling, closing in on her.
"Wow, you’re okay after inhaling that whole stench at once?"
Hearing that, Lovia suddenly felt violently nauseous.
"Shut up."
Valkas chuckled.
The monster’s level seemed to sit right at the edge, dangerously close to climbing into Radiant tier.
It would’ve been a serious problem if it were already Radiant-tier, but fortunately, that hadn’t happened yet—they still had a chance here.
"Grttt...!!!"
While the monster’s attention stayed locked on Lovia, Godon suddenly appeared from somewhere, thick, sturdy gauntlets on his hands, raising both fists before slamming them down onto the monster’s eye.
Explosion—!!
A devastating shockwave of impact sent the monster reeling, letting out a shrill scream of pain.
Thanks to Lovia’s earlier attack, the monster had gone soft in a few spots, and that was exactly what Godon had been aiming for.
Black blood sprayed out as the monster stumbled back several steps, sending a low tremor through the tunnel.
Turning its gaze toward Godon, the monster’s mouth opened again, ready to do the same thing it had done to Lovia before.
But before it could, Valkas, his face completely drained of color, charged forward at maximum speed. His entire body turned as light as a feather, and he shot forward like lightning, appearing right in front of the monster.
"Shut your damn mouth! I don’t want to smell your breath again for the rest of my life!"
Explosion—!! Detonation—!!
Valkas’s spear slammed into the monster’s face at incredible speed, nearly piercing straight through its thick hide, and at the very same moment, that feather-light spear suddenly turned unbearably heavy.
Heavier, and heavier, and heavier still, until finally—
Crack—!!
Something cracked apart from within.
The monster, sensing the danger, resorted to something reckless. Its arms began smashing apart the rocks lining the tunnel around them.
As a result, chunks of stone began raining down from the ceiling, forcing Valkas and Godon to fall back, their faces twisted in frustration.
But well, this wasn’t only their fight to handle.
"Show it! Show me! Damn it, Eiros! Show me your power, why are you just standing there watching?!"
With that thunderous shout, Valkas tensed up, narrowly avoiding a falling chunk of rock over and over—no, actually, he didn’t avoid it. Right after finishing that sentence, one of the boulders slammed straight into his body, knocking him down and pinning him to the ground, vanishing from sight entirely.
Eiros, the one being addressed, scratched his cheek.
’Me? Don’t we have a protagonist standing right here?’
So, Eiros glanced over at Alen.
"....."
Their eyes met.
"Why are you looking at me?"
"Aren’t you going to help your friend?"
"That was the plan, but Valkas told me you’ve already awakening, so how could I possibly miss this? I want to see it—your Stigmata."
Right then, they suddenly heard a muffled scream.
"You. Damn it. Bastards. That monster’s about to drag me straight into its rotten mouth, do something!!!!"
Oh, that was Valkas, right behind the standing monster.
"..."
Letting out a long sigh, Eiros met Alen’s gaze, which seemed to say ’good luck.’
Then, after a moment of silence, Eiros said:
"Sorry, but I’m a support type."
"Huh?"
"Valkas is going to die if you keep standing there like that."
Hearing that, Alen’s face went pale.
"S-seriously?! Damn it! Say that sooner!!!!"
Panicking, he immediately shot off toward where Valkas was.
Eiros smiled, amused, as he heard the Saintess’s voice beside him.
"You’re a liar."
"...I’m just tired, I did just fight, didn’t I?"
"But you’re lying."
"....."
