Chapter 26: Let’s Go Out Together

"So, whose name were you screaming while you were fucking yourself?"

All I did was stare at the girl in the robe, my mind going to different places as I thought of an answer.

My heart gave a sudden, violent leap against my ribs, my face instantly flushing a deep, hot crimson that had absolutely nothing to do with the leftover fever of my heat cycle. Angel was leaning casually against the marble countertop, her wine-red hair messy around her shoulders and a smug, knowing smirk locked onto her lips as she watched me struggle.

I wondered if she heard my voice last night. All the moaning and screaming.

Please dear lord.. that would be embarrassing...

But I made sure the door was closed, and unlike her, who makes sure the entire mansion knows she is having sexual intercourse in her bedroom...

She never cared about volume when she brought her random partners home, her dominant Alpha presence always taking up every single inch of the hallways without a single ounce of shame.

But how loud was I last night?

The terrifying thought made my knees tremble under the table, my fingers fumbling blindly as I tried to find something else to look at.

I adjusted my glasses, made a small scoff, and locked my eyes onto my plate like it was the most interesting piece of art in the whole world.

Suddenly, the French toast and scrambled eggs were so fascinating.

"I asked a question."

Her deep, husky voice dropped a second time, the lazy drawl carrying an absolute command that vibrated right through the quiet space.

That girl just wouldn’t ignore me.

I wish this was like the old days when Angel didn’t talk to me at all.

It was so easy then...

Then I stood up and headed for the front door.

"I have to go to work... have a nice day."

My feet were already moving rapidly toward the high archway of the living room, my voice coming out in a small, breathless rush that sounded incredibly guilty.

Wait.... did I just tell Angel to have a nice day?

"You don’t have work today," Angel’s voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Yes, I do. I have the morning shift at the library."

"Well, you don’t."

"Yes, I do."

"I called your workplace and told them that you need bed rest because of your cycle, so just go back to sleep. Sleeping during the day is the best," Angel said casually, sipping her morning coffee. Then she grabbed a piece of toast and ate it.

"I have to go to work. If I don’t go to work, I won’t get paid. I need the money."

That’s right.

I need to work today so I can get my complete salary. I can’t afford to be short because I need the money for something important.

Every single hour on the library clock counted toward my goal, a slow accumulation of funds that would eventually buy my way out of this territory for good.

"Your mother is married to my mom. Why do you need money when you can just call her and ask for some? After all, you are her daughter."

Angel tilted her head to the side, her crimson eyes tracking the fierce flush on my cheeks with a genuine, mocking curiosity that made my blood boil.

I forced a smile, trying not to say anything. I knew she was teasing me, but I didn’t want to have a long conversation with her.

That’s right.

My mom is married to a billionaire. Icould just call her anytime and ask for whatever I wanted.

A simple text message would drop the funds into my bank account within minutes, erasing my small worries with a single stroke of a pen.

But I know my mom.

The cold reality of her voice always lingered in the back of my mind, a sharp, regular lecture that kept me from ever reaching out for her assistance.

Everything she has done for me until this day, every chance she gets, she reminds me of it.

Every dollar spent was a heavy token of obligation, a list of sacrifices that she held over my head like a weapon whenever I tried to speak my mind.

You have no idea what I had to go through just to give birth to you.

You have no idea what I had to face with your father just so I could give you a proper family.

You have no idea what I had to do just to buy you your first bicycle.

You have no idea what I had to do so you could go to a good school.

The mansion you are living in right now... you should be grateful for that because people would do anything to be in your position.

So I need to earn my own money, so that when I move into my own apartment, the woman who gave me life won’t say I am living because of her.

I needed a clean break, a small space of my own where every single piece of furniture belonged entirely to my own hard work and sweat.

"I don’t need to tell you anything. And you have no right to call in for me. I am going to work, and that is it," I said.

"So this is the thanks I get... Well, you look better now, so go to your fucking job. See you by six tonight for movie night."

Angel lowered her coffee mug onto the counter with a dull click, her tone shifting back into that cold, nonchalant drawl within a fraction of a second.

She picked up empty plates and moved toward the sink, completely ignoring me while the little orange cat crunched on her breakfast in the corner.

I was about to go to my so-called workplace, but then I stopped where I was.

Not because of what Angel had said.

The stubborn anger in my chest slowly deflated, replaced by the logical reality of how the library scheduling system actually worked on the weekends.

If Angel really did call my workplace, then someone had already filled in for me, and my next shift would probably be tomorrow.

If I went to work now, I would just end up sitting in a corner like some patron.

I would be wasting the bus fare just to browse the shelves aimlessly, an awkward, unnecessary presencein that place...

I also have plans this evening.

Benny will be expecting me at the orphanage for the reading session, and it’s my first official day..

Instead, let me use my free shift to go on a date with Angel.

I mean... movie night.

I turned back around slowly, clearing my throat to find my voice as I marched back into the breakfast room where she stood.

"Angel... let’s have movie night now. Let’s go out together."
