Chapter 35: I Can’t Feel My Legs
Chapter 35: I Can’t Feel My Legs
Tera had woken up to discover that everything below her waist had filed for resignation.
Her legs felt too heavy to move, and there was a dull ache resonating from her lower back.
Tera stared at the canopy of trees above her, then slowly looked down at her legs as if they had personally betrayed her.
"Why can’t I move my legs?"
[Why are you asking me?]
[( ͡ ͡º - ͡ ͡º )☕]
[After all, Host is the one who wanted to experience the natural consequences of attempting to match a bear beast-man’s stamina with a frail, shiftless body]
Tera remembered going a few rounds with Xavi, and she lightly blushed at the thought of how his cock had filled her so completely. Then the more she remembered, the more she realised she wasn’t sure how she had gotten here.
She had come a few times, and he had kept on going and then...
"Oh, wow. Did I actually pass out while we were doing it?"
[( ◕▿◕ )]
[This system will give Host three guesses]
"Never mind."
Tera groaned and let her head fall back against the fur beneath her. She then shifted and noticed she was also dressed in a change of clothes, and they smelled like Xavi.
Had he dressed her, too?
She fought back a smile, feeling oddly refreshed despite how sore she felt.
Tera pushed herself up, and she could finally move her legs just a little, but it had taken some effort. Her legs trembled, her thighs ached, and her hips felt like they’d been rearranged by a very determined sculptor.
There was a pleasant, deep soreness between her legs that reminded her exactly how thoroughly she’d been—
[Xavi’s Favourability: 40% → 51%]
[Xavi’s desire to protect and provide for Host has intensified]
[He has presented coupling gifts]
Tera blinked. "Coupling gifts?"
She looked around for the first time and noticed the grapes. A small pile of them, round and purple and glistening with morning dew, had been placed on a broad leaf right beside her. There were also slightly larger blue fruits.
[In beast culture, a male who leaves food for a female after mating is expressing serious courtship intent]
[Xavi has provided:]
[Fruits: grapes and urim fruits]
[His personal hide (scent marked)]
[And fresh meat]
Tera stared at the grapes, then at the hide she was wearing, then back at the grapes.
’He’s... courting me?’
[This system believes the human equivalent would be breakfast in bed]
[Except the bed is the ground, the breakfast is raw fruit, and the potential mate in question rearranged your internal organs roughly nine hours ago]
[ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ]
Tera ate a grape. It was sweet, and sweeter than anything she had tasted since arriving in this world. The juice burst across her tongue, and she had to press her lips together from doing something embarrassing like crying over fruit.
Her body was so depleted that the burst of sugar had almost made her tear up.
She ate five more before she remembered the system had mentioned Xavi had gotten her meat, but there was no meat near her.
Then she registered the smell after a few seconds.
The breeze was carrying over the unmistakable scent of meat being smoked over fire.
Multiple fires, by the smell of it.
Tera looked up to see that she was near the plateau where the clan had moved to so they could freely make the fires in the clearing. But the smell was terrible.
It smelled like someone had set fire to a pile of wet leaves and then, for reasons unknown, had decided to cook meat over it.
Three fire pits had been set, and groups of beast folk were gathered around them.
And from the look of things, several beast folk had clearly attempted to replicate her smoking technique. Two beast males were hunched over a smoking rack, arguing loudly about whether the green leaves they’d added were the ones the shiftless female used.
Someone here had apparently decided that if a few leaves made the meat taste better, then all the leaves would make it taste incredible. One had smeared his meat with such a thick paste of random greenery that the slab looked like it had been dragged through a swamp. The smell coming off it was so aggressively bitter that even the beast man next to him had scooted several feet away.
Another group sat in a miserable huddle, chewing with expressions of deep personal betrayal. Their meat was coated in a thick, dark green paste that smelled faintly of rotten vegetation.
Tera clapped a hand over her mouth in shock. They couldn’t just put any leaf they saw on the meat!
[Several clan members have attempted to replicate Host’s cooking methods]
[Success rate: 0%]
[This system is amused]
A cub nearby took one bite of his mother’s creation, spat it out, and immediately grabbed a piece of raw meat instead, apparently deciding that uncooked flesh was preferable to whatever crime had been committed against his portion.
Several others had simply given up on the experiment entirely and were eating their meat raw in their beast forms, casting judgmental looks at the smokers as if to say, ’We told you so.’
[This system would like to inform Host that three clan members have already left to wash the leaf paste off their meat at the stream]
[One of them was crying]
[ꉂꉂ◟(˃᷄ꇴ˂᷅๑)༡]
Tera pressed her hand over her mouth to stop the laugh from escaping. Her stomach hurt—partly from hunger, and from the effort of not howling at the catastrophe in front of her.
But the fact that they were trying at all made Tera smile sadly.
Her amusement faded as a more practical question surfaced. Where was all this meat coming from?
The clan had been short on food since she arrived. Xavi had hunted once and brought back more than she had seen when she first encountered the clan.
Before she could ask the system, two figures approached her, and they were coming with a very questionable object in their hands.
