Chapter 37: [37] Not Your Typical Monsters
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Darius screamed out in fury as he charged towards the monster, it was a careless move, one that was fueled by his frustration.
But regardless of his careless act, Darius was skilled, and the goblin champion was already half dead.
The monster threw Diego’s body at him, trying to use his trauma against him, but Darius sliced the body in half, then he darted to the side, evading another blow, before slicing the goblin champion’s head clean off its shoulders.
"Maintain the formation at all cost!!"
Only twenty eight players were left, but the nightmare was far from over, it was only just beginning.
The attack had shaken the frontline, and now the goblins were pouring in, trying to take advantage of their misfortune.
A goblin suddenly sprang forward like a monkey, latching itself onto a player’s face. It did not use weapons, instead it sunk jagged teeth into her neck, causing her screams to drown in blood.
But just as the player fell, an arrow sunk into the eyes of the undead goblin, shattering its head and killing it on the spot.
Darius kicked an undead in the gut, sending it back. Then his sword flashed and he swung in a horizontal arc, his sword splitting through rotten bones and flesh, before bursting out of the other side.
Three goblins were felled with that one attack.
He was about to turn to the next group, when a goblin suddenly leaped at his face out of nowhere, but a chubby boy immediately stepped in front of the goblin.
Miguel blocked the attack with his shield, then swung his mace, crushing its head into crumbs.
The chubby boy glanced at Darius with a wide smile on his face. Darius nodded to show his appreciation.
Swish-!
Soo-jin raced past him, her figure a blur of motion. Her fingers moved with destructive force behind them, shredding undead into ribbons.
Isabella was not far behind her, she was cleaving any goblins that would come close with daggers made of blood, her reflexes swifter than that of a cat.
They managed to take out multiple goblins before they threatened to swarm around them.
"Soo-jin, Isabella, behind me! I need a few seconds!"
Darius raised his sword above his head and the blade suddenly grew in size, transforming from a long sword into a great sword.
Hearing his order, Soo-jin and Isabella immediately returned to the safety of the formation, while Darius frowned at the undead.
His sword sparked with energy, the golden part of the weapon glowing intensely.
The battle remained chaotic, the mages were launching faster spells now, and the melee fighters were managing to keep the bird at bay.
Daffodil remained alert, activating their shields when they were about to be overwhelmed...
But Darius waited.
[Threat detected! Undead Goblin Champion, Level 7 x 1!]
Darius smiled. "I knew there wouldn’t be just one of you bastards!"
He had played long enough to know that the tutorial was not fair.
Without wasting time, the goblin charged forward like a maniac, its armoured body poised to break through their tanks.
Dariau took in a slow, steamy breath, his eyes sharp with focus.
And then he brought his sword down.
"Dawn of glory!"
Soo-jin, Isabella and the tanks immediately left his path in haste as Darius swung, but they barely made it in time.
There was an intensely bright golden glow, and everything right from the front of Darius’s feet forwards was reduced to dust.
There was nothing left of the goblin champion but its limbs that had been burned off its charred body.
Darius was breathing heavily due to the drawbacks of using the attack. He wiped off the sweat from face and stared at what was left of the goblins.
"Cain...."
A sinister chuckle came from behind him, and then the darkness in the room dimmed as foul magic poisoned the atmosphere.
"I thought you would never ask..."
Cain brought both palms together, and within it, a purple-black ball of chaotic energy was formed.
He flung the ball at the goblins, and right as it landed, it began to pull the undead goblins into the hole.
"Abyssal glare!"
Some of the goblins were trying to escape, but Soo-jin used her wind magic to force them into the pit which closed up a second later, swallowing up the last of the goblins.
Finally, peace was restored to the hall.
Darius sighed as turned to look at the group. "Is everyone alright?" Apart from a few wounds that Daffodil was already healing, many of them seemed to be okay—
He noticed a few players laying on the floor, motionless and slowly shook his head, gritting his teeth hard.
He had been so busy focusing on that last attack that he must have missed their notifications.
After doing a head count, Darius realized that they already had three casualties. Three people died, and they hadn’t even met the king!
While he was brooding over his failures, someone placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Do not cry over the loss of parasites my friend, we are stronger as a group because they are gone." Cain said with a straight face.
He glanced at the bodies and shook his head. "Survival of the fittest... that is simply the way of the world."
How did that make sense? Does that mean only the strong had the right to live while the weak should lay down and be treated like rags?
Sure they may have not been very powerful, but everyone standing here worked hard to be in that very spot.
Darius knocked Cain’s hand off his shoulder and began walking forward. "Let’s move, we still have to deal with the boss..."
But as he walked away, Cain stared at him with a bitter look in his eyes.
’So the gutter blood now thinks he can shine like gold, huh?’ Cain’s jaw tightened, and something dangerous flickered in his expression.
He had only bothered to speak with a third generation nobody like him because his class seemed useful, but now—
’Let’s see how long your arrogance will last...’
Unlike before where the hall seemed to go on endlessly, after walking for a few seconds, almost as though it was a mirage, a large door appeared before them.
Darius waited for all the players to be healed, which nearly drained Daffodil of what was left of her reserves.
She had already run out of mana potions, so she would not be as effective in their coming battle.
Darius walked up to the door and held its handles, taking a moment to compose himself.
Just before he pushed the doors open, revealing the inside of the boss room.
