Chapter 35: [35] Tower Objectives
Even after waiting for thirty additional minutes, only a handful of players met up with the group. Out of nearly two hundred players, twenty-nine students were left to confront the boss.
Darius felt his heart sink at the loss. Did he make a mistake by telling them to split up? What would have happened if another person led the group?
These thoughts attempted to plague his mind, but he swiftly banished them. He could not doubt himself, not at this point.
Although two hundred people in one group was a force to be reckoned with, it may have led to significantly more problems if they had banded together.
Two hundred players were far too conspicuous, and if they ran into one of the greater horrors in the forest, they may have all been wiped out...
’The Grace Keeper for example...’ Darius thought.
He had only seen it from a distance, but he knew for certain that if they had fought it, neither of them would survive.
’I need to remain sharp...’ Darius cautioned himself inwardly. They were at the final stretch...
Clasp!
Warm hands suddenly wrapped around his neck, and a soft body pressed into his own. "What has got you so bothered~?"
Darius was shocked at first, but after hearing her voice, he calmed down. "You’re going to give people the wrong impression." He said in an exasperated tone.
"Hmm~? Let them think what they want. You’re mine after all."
"Vanessa..."
She laughed heartily and let go, walking next to him. Darius glanced at her and smiled warmly.
Vanessa was one of the class leaders, the only Grand Mage that had awakened in their class.
Her violet eyes were always filled with mischief, it had been that way since the day he met her many years ago.
Dark brown hair the colour of oak was left free, restrained only by the pointy hat that sat on her pretty head.
Vanessa was like a flower, her beauty was without doubt, but there was something about her that caused a sense of calm to flood over him whenever he saw that cute oval face.
"What? Did my face alleviate your worries?" She teased.
"Shut up."
"Heh..."
Darius turned to the students that had gathered behind him. He had given them sufficient time to rest, now it was about time they ended this nightmare.
He was not one for speeches, but he had to give them one anyway, so he decided to be as brief as possible.
"My fellow classmates." He spoke, allowing his words to settle over them.
"We came here as Awakeners, a mere example of what could be, but right now, beyond that door is what WILL be."
"We have all lost a lot. We have holes in our hearts that cannot be filled. Burdens that would eat at us for as long as we draw breath..."
Those words hung heavy on his tongue, and bitter tears threatened to slip out of his eyes. Darius could remember every single face that was not here, their last words, the faith they had put in him.
He had failed them all.
"Let us redirect our anger, our sorrow, our anguish, our pain! We shall pour it into this fucking boss fight! We will show them that we are not maggots to be trampled under their feet!"
The tutorial was beyond unfair. They were meant to be the hunters, but it seemed as though to the monsters, they were nothing but food that had wandered onto their plates.
They were an elite class, ranked in the top ten! This was not meant to be their fate!
As their hero, the blame rested on him. But not anymore... These twenty-nine, he would make sure that not a single one was lost.
"For our brothers, for our sisters, for all those who gave their lives to see this horrid tutorial cleared..."
He gritted his teeth and raised his hand high up into the air. A sword with a gold core and crystal blade appeared in his hands, and then his tone grew cold and bitter and intense.
"Win."
The players erupted into a battle roar that shook the entire forest. Darius watched them with steely eyes, his resolve solidifying in his heart.
Then he turned around to the large double door that led to the dungeon and placed his hand on it.
[For the sake of mortal’s heretical nature the towers were formed. For by rising, one may yet fall, and by falling one may yet rise.]
[Do you wish to ascend the tower?]
It was the custom notification that always came up at all towers. Many scholars had argued what the true meaning was, but at the end of the day, it changed nothing.
He glanced at the other class leaders and clicked. [Yes]
The moment he clicked the tab, a soft voice began to speak, detailing the tower’s history.
[King Summus once harboured hatred in his heart, hatred for those who claimed his beloved, hatred for the Supreme.]
[Though his people begged for reconsideration, King Summus would not be consoled, and so he sought vengeance at the cost of his people.]
[A sacrifice of blood, an oat to transcend mortal flesh, a bid at divinity.]
[War broke out, a chaotic battle that saw the realm torn from within. And on the final day of the war, the army born from rebellion broke into his castle before his experiment could reach fruition.]
[Alone with five of his most loyal guards, King Summus held back the entirety of his kingdom for thirty days and thirty nights, and by the end of it, there was nothing left of his kingdom.]
[Not even ashes remained]
[Quest objectives]
[INFILTRATE THE CASTLE OF HARROWS]
[REBUKE EVIL]
[PURGE INIQUITY]
[SLAY THE KING]
There was a loud click as the heavy doors swung open. A cold wind blew out of the dark space, causing a chill to settle deep in their bones, and then torches lit up inside it, one by one, brightening up the place.
Darius swallowed as their figures blurred and they all appeared within the tower, the door shutting behind them...
The final battle had begun.
