Chapter 20: [20] Black Mountain (2)

Soo-Jin’s pupils had become distended stars, every single hair on her body had risen with vulpine aggression, and her muscles contracted.

She immediately turned around, launching her fan in Nolan’s direction, while simultaneously racing towards Bella.

There was no way of telling if she would make it to them in time, but she had to try.

Isabella groaned as the worm’s teeth sunk so deep into her thighs, that hot tears burned in her eyes. Acidic slime burned her skin like rubber, while her blood gushed out in waves, soaking her skirt.

She gritted her teeth so hard that she thought they might crack, a low groan escaping her lips.

Her head was foggy, so it had hard to form coherent thoughts, and her body was aching as a result of the worm that had slammed into them.

But she could not die, not here, and certainly not before her mistress!

Isabella had a job to do, protect Soo-jin. She would fight till her dying breath.

She waved her hand forward and three blood spikes exploded through the worm’s head, blood drifting down to her face.

But it was not enough.

Its weak point was at the sides of its head, but there was no way to reach it from her current position.

The worm wrapped its tongue around her waist and hands, and squeezed so hard that her bones groaned.

She could no longer hold it in, she screamed out in pain and the worm seemed to enjoy her suffering, the tongue tightening even harder, just before it began to pull her deeper into its mouth.

Isabella struggled to free herself, but she could not summon her strength in this position, and she had lost far too much blood.

Her eyes dimmed as her face approached its maw. Was this the way she would die? Forgotten at the belly in a worm?

Memories flashed through her mind, promises she had never fulfilled, dreams they were still too far to reach.

But just as she was neck deep into its mouth, its teeth coming down to detach her head—-

"Spirit art, howling tempest!"

Wooosh!

The entire top part of the worm’s head was suddenly blown apart by a gust of wind, the attack so expertly done that she was left unscathed.

Her eyes widened as a large, fluffy tail wrapped itself around her aching waist, pulling her out of its maw and carrying her along.

"Miss Soo-jin?" Her eyes widened with disbelief, and then her expression fell. "I’m sorry, miss..." she stuttered, her eyes blurring with tears.

"Sorry for what?" This is not your fault we are in this mess."

"But—"

"Be quiet, I need to focus." Soo-jin cut her off, her vulpine eyes locked on Olivia. Two worms were stalking behind her, and from the looks of it, this one did not like to play with its food.

Olivia would be dead within minutes.

As annoying as the harpy could be, she was a vital part of their team, and her firepower was one that could not be easily found.

Soo-jin could not afford to lose her, but at the same time, she was far too slow. She would not make it in time.

If she arrived at her current pace, she would only be able to take care of one of them, while Olivia was gobbled down by the other.

"Tsk!" She clicked her tongue, knowing the only possible solution.

She had hoped she would not have to use her special skill because of the stress it would place on her body.

She was still a young Kitsune who had barely leveled up, so she could not even maintain it for more than thirty seconds, but it was her only option.

"Hold tight, Bella."

Bella’s eyes widened. "Wait, are you going to—" her question was answered a second later.

Soo-jin’s clothes vanished into thin air, and then her body suddenly expanded. There was an audible sound of snapping and twisting bones, as her entire skeletal structure was rearranged to suit her form.

Each twist, each bend filled her with intense agony. She bit down so hard that she tasted iron. It was worse because of how she rushed the process, completing everything all while running!

Her hands transformed to paws, nose to a snout, and fur sprouted out of every inch of her body. In a fraction of a second, Soo-jin was gone, and what remained was a hulking beast in the shape of a fox, a Kitsune.

Olivia staggered forward, her mind blank.

’What happened?’

It was hard to remember, all she could feel was pain and the warm blood that slid down her head.

A pounding sound reached her ears and she raised her gaze, only to see a gigantic fox changing towards her.

She blinked and cocked her head to the side.

It took a good second for her to realize what was going on.

"Ahhhh!" Olivia screamed and covered her head with her hands as the fox swiped its claws at her.

She had expected the pain to completely consume her, but when nothing came, she opened her eyes to see a massive worm get torn to pieces.

That was when she remembered what was happening.

The fox then pinned another worm to the ground and ripped out its neck, before turning to face her.

Olivia got up to run, but the fox grabbed her in its mouth and began running.

"Let me go, let me go you beast!" She squirmed around. The fox grunted, and strangely it sounded far too human?

Olivia was flung into the air and she landed on the soft back of the fox. Sitting behind her was Isabella, who gave her a blank stare.

"Wait, what are you doing here? Don’t tell me the fox got you too—"

"Enough with the nonsense. We are still in the middle of a war!" A guttural, but familiar voice reached her ears.

"S-Sooo-jin?!" Olivia gasped.

"I’m going after the worms, you two cover me!" She said as she charged forward.

Although Soo-jin had gone after Bella first, making it look as though she abandoned Nolan, that was in fact the opposite of what had truly happened.

The first person she saved was Nolan.

Her fan had sliced right through the tongue of the corpse worm, causing it to bleed all over their spear man and giving him room to escape.

Throughout, she had kept an eye on him as he tried to push the worm back, just in case anything happened, and now—

Soo-jin leaped into the air and landed atop the worm, crushing its head beneath her claws.

’Twenty seconds left...’
