Chapter 2: [2] Fuck Off
Ark hissed in his mind.
’This idiot.’ It was clear what his intentions were. He had introduced himself, and regardless of how discourteous he was, ironically, courtesy demanded that Ark introduce himself as well.
Among the awakened, your race was basically like an identity card. With everyone watching them, he wanted Ark to call out his race so that they could all have a good laugh.
And it was all because of a petty grudge. Throughout their time in the academy, Ark had always ranked in the top five in all events.
Despite being a commoner, when it came to combat classes, he had repeatedly dusted most of the so-called nobles.
It was clear that most of them hated him for it, but Cain had taken it to another level, and now that Ark landed a useless race, he was all too willing to dig his claws into him.
Ark shook his head and turned to leave. "I don’t have time for this..."
He was not a fool that had to sit around when Cain’s intentions were as clear. That was protagonist type character, and thankfully, he was not the protagonist of some power fantasy novel.
But the moment he turned around, Cain’s nostrils flared with anger.
He had taken out his precious time to talk to a nobody, and yet he was walking out on him?
He grabbed Ark’s shoulder blade, his eyes were cold, yet he forced out a strained smile.
"Hey, I’m pretty sure I just introduced myself. Courtesy demands you do the same—"
Ark glanced at him from over his shoulder, the azure blue light in his eyes glowing like a raging flame.
"Fuck off."
The student body became dreadfully quiet, but it barely lasted for a second before the whispers began.
— Did he just put off Cain?
— He must have a death wish talking to a member of the Lancelot family in that manner!
— I like his guts, but man, that was foolish. Even the hero wouldn’t dare insult Cain to his face...
Ark could understand their reservations. After the cataclysm that ravaged Venaris centuries ago, those that rose out of the embers became something like nobles.
These families were called the first generation players, and most of the top guilds till this very day were run by them.
But honestly? Ark didn’t give a rat’s ass about who he was, or if he had a big daddy in Eden.
These so-called first generation families were just greedy Players, whose only goal was to amass as much power and influence as possible, while keeping each other in check.
They did not care about their purpose as Players. If they did not get a fat check from the government, they would sit back in their castles while the world burned.
A vein ticked on Cain’s forehead, his grip on Ark’s shoulder blade tightened.
"What did you say?" His voice came out strained.
Ark would have raised a brow if he had one. "I know your kind is hard of hearing, but I didn’t know you were deaf."
Once again, the crowd was beyond shocked. Some people even stepped away, afraid to be caught up in whatever mess would ensue.
"Read my teeth. F-u-c-k o-f-f. Or would you like me to write it on a card for you?"
Cain could no longer hold it in. "You bastard!"
With just one hand, as though Ark was a sack of feathers, he hoisted him up into the air, the wind rushing through his eye sockets and fleeing through the cracks in his skull.
Cain drew his arm back and Ark prepared himself for the punch. Cain had already awakened a class, this was sure to hurt like hell.
But just as the punch came flying, someone just as imposing as Cain came between them.
With one simple move, he unhooked Cain’s hand from Ark, Ark landing roughly on the floor.
The boy’s hair was golden like the sun, and his intense blue eyes sparkled with electricity. He had a solid frame, hollow cheeks and an exasperated look on his face as he shot Ark a glare.
Darius, the hero.
"This is neither the time nor the place." Darius’ voice was stern as he glanced between the two of them, his very presence commanding respect.
Even though Cain was clearly irritated, he did not push the matter further, because even he knew not to cross the hero.
Darius was not from a particularly high ranking family. His family was well off, but not at the level of the first or even second generation families.
The reason he commanded that much respect was due to one reason alone, his class.
Generally, classes were not ranked, but that didn’t mean there was no hierarchy in terms of power, or special classes.
The hero class in particular was one of a kind. Among the hundreds of students participating in the trials on the continent, there could only be one hero.
As such, the hero was often the de-facto leader of the student body.
"Boys will be boys. You should let Cain have his fun, if the regulars do not know respect, then it should be beaten into them." A snarky voice came as a girl stepped forward.
She had wavy orange hair that was unnaturally long, going down to her waist, emerald green eyes that sparkled with mischief, and freckles dotting her cheeks.
But the features that stood out the most were the white wings—with red highlights—sprouting out of her back, and her feet that ended in eagle-like claws.
Olivia Harrow, harpy and the class’ resident vixen.
Darius shot her a calm glare. "Teamwork is essential for our survival, what would happen if we were to start fighting here?"
’He says that, but all he wants is absolute control.’ Ark sighed.
Why was he so unfortunate to have such a terrible set of classmates?
The only redeeming quality about them was their skills. The rest was zero. Ark had played enough RPG games to know what happened when a team was chaotic...
Before Olivia could argue, the mic chimed as the principal’s voice came. "Gather around, gather around my little duckies. Class leaders, to the top of the stage!"
Cain hissed through his teeth as he walked past Ark, stopping when he got to his side. He glanced at him, his face contorting into a crazed look.
"See you in Eden."
Then he joined the hero as well as the other class leaders that were gathering in front.
Ark clicked his tongue, watching as he left, his eyes glowing even brighter. "I’ll be waiting for you."
Something white flashed in his vision, and Ark turned around to see a girl walk up to the crumpled pack of his calcium pills.
She picked it up with foxy grace, three large tails swerving in the air as she grabbed the box and lifted it to the light.
"C-calcium?" Her voice was soft but icy, not a drop of emotion in her words.
Hair longer than Olivia’s swayed when she stood straight. They flowed down like strands knitted out of snow, framing her face, a few of them running in front of her shoulders.
Her fox ears twitched, crimson eyes narrowing with confusion. Then she raised her gaze to meet his own, a second passing between them.
"You... dropped... this."
Ark could not bring himself to speak.
’What is she doing here?’
