Chapter 34: Chapter 32: Strange Zombie
"We need to contact Shen Xinyi immediately!"
Yu Dong couldn’t solve this problem on his own. Liu Ye’ye’s illness was getting worse.
Her high fever wouldn’t break, and she was coughing constantly. She looked extremely weak.
Zhou took out his binoculars and looked outside. He could see Building 3 clearly, but the curtains on the fifth floor were still drawn.
"Dongzi, it’s 6:30 in the morning. Shen Xinyi probably isn’t up yet. What do we do?"
It was still raining lightly outside, making it dangerous to fly the drone.
Besides, Yu Dong had never flown it before. Liu Ye’ye was always the one who did. He was afraid he’d just break it.
"You keep an eye on Shen Xinyi’s window. I’m going upstairs to get something..."
Yu Dong returned to the fourth floor, found a steel slingshot in his storeroom, and grabbed a bag of steel ball bearings.
Then he climbed up to the sixth floor, aimed at the window of apartment 502 across the way, and pulled back lightly... THWACK!
The ball bearing fell short of Building 3.
Yu Dong increased the force slightly... THWACK!
It hit the wall of the fourth floor of Building 3.
Yu Dong tried a few more times and finally managed to hit the wall of apartment 502.
Then, he increased the force.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Shen Xinyi’s eyes shot open. She sat up in bed, startled by a sound coming from outside her wall.
She went to the window, looked through her binoculars, and realized it was Yu Dong shooting at her building.
The two of them quickly communicated by writing on small whiteboards.
[Got food?]
[Ye’s sick.]
[Symptoms?]
[High fever, won’t break. Delirious. Weak. Coughing. It’s been a day.]
Seeing what Yu Dong wrote, Shen Xinyi immediately realized this was a major problem.
’She was fine the day before yesterday. I haven’t seen her for a day and she’s already deteriorated this rapidly... It’s most likely a sudden bacterial infection.’
She wasn’t a doctor, but she was a nurse in the internal medicine department of a Grade A Tertiary hospital. She had treated many patients according to doctors’ orders and was very familiar with certain conditions.
Then, she asked for more details about Liu Ye’ye’s condition over the past day and finally made her assessment.
[It’s most likely bacterial pneumonia. The onset is very rapid, and it can worsen quickly within a day. If not treated promptly, it can develop into sepsis. At that point... she can’t be saved without a proper hospital.]
Yu Dong’s hands clenched into tight fists when he saw that.
[How do we treat it?!]
[Advanced broad-spectrum antibiotics. An injection of Ceftriaxone. That can bring the condition under control quickly.]
[Don’t have it!]
’How would I have injectable drugs?’ Yu Dong thought. He didn’t know how to give injections or anything about medication. He had bought his medical supplies based on a list he found from some expert on Zhihu.
[Levofloxacin. Oral. Full dose.]
[Have it!]
Yu Dong had bought that antibiotic!
[Continue using Ibuprofen for the fever. Take Ambroxol for the cough. Give her oxygen; she’ll have trouble breathing.]
Seeing that Shen Xinyi wasn’t writing anymore, Yu Dong memorized everything and hurried to the fourth floor to find the medicine in his medical kit.
"Levofloxacin... Ambroxol... oxygen tank, got it!"
Yu Dong ran downstairs and shouted, "Zhou, figure out how to use this oxygen tank."
He quickly gave the medicine to Liu Ye’ye. He noticed then that her breathing was indeed labored. The constant coughing and phlegm made her gasp for air.
After he fed her all the medicine, Zhou had already set up the small oxygen tube and nasal cannula. They quickly put it on Liu Ye’ye.
As a white mist slowly appeared, Liu Ye’ye’s breathing became much easier.
Yu Dong stayed by Liu Ye’ye’s side for an hour. Her high fever subsided, her breathing gradually stabilized, and her coughing lessened significantly.
"It’s working..."
Yu Dong, who had been on edge all day, finally let out a sigh of relief.
「Around noon, Liu Ye’ye gradually woke up.」
She saw Yu Dong sitting by her bed and managed a weak smile, like a little kitten.
"Senior, you’ve been watching over me this whole time..."
"I was afraid you’d die and turn into a zombie."
"And here I was, feeling all touched..."
"Come here, let me check."
"Huh?"
Yu Dong touched her forehead and found her temperature was normal, which finally set his mind at ease.
"Good, the fever’s gone... Sit up and eat something. You haven’t eaten for most of the day."
"Oh."
With the correct medication, Liu Ye’ye was out of danger.
At noon, the rain stopped, the sky cleared, and the sun came out.
After a few bites, Liu Ye’ye suddenly smacked her forehead and rushed to get her drone.
"Xinyi hasn’t eaten yet!"
Because of the heavy rain yesterday, they hadn’t been able to deliver any food to Shen Xinyi for a whole day.
"Today, besides the hot meal, let’s send some packaged food over too..."
"If only my oven still worked... I really want to bake a tray of cookies for Xinyi. Hey! Can I borrow a little power from your solar battery? I’ll just bake one tray... just one, pleeeease!"
"We really should thank her properly, but a tray of cookies... isn’t that a little inadequate?"
"It’s the best thing I know how to make."
"Then wait until she’s here, and you two can make them together."
"Huh?"
"Alright, let’s vote. All in favor of bringing Shen Xinyi into Building 1, raise your hands."
As soon as Yu Dong finished speaking, all three of them instantly raised their hands, then looked at each other and smiled.
"Alright, then let’s start planning the mission to rescue Shen Xinyi."
At noon, after Liu Ye’ye sent the food over, Shen Xinyi gave her some more instructions and advice on subsequent medication.
Liu Ye’ye took her medicine and went back to rest. Her condition was gradually improving.
This whole ordeal made Yu Dong realize just how important it was to have a medical professional on the team.
Even if she wasn’t a doctor, just a nurse, Shen Xinyi’s medical knowledge far surpassed the other three’s.
If anyone got sick, at least she would know which medication to use and how to provide care.
Yu Dong and Zhou were discussing the rescue plan.
"According to Shen Xinyi, the hallways in her building, Building 3, are extremely dangerous. There are a lot of zombies running back and forth. It’s incredibly risky."
"If we want to rescue her, we first have to figure out a way to lure the zombies in the hallway out and kill them..."
"So here’s the problem: how do we kill zombies we can’t see while ensuring our own safety?"
Yu Dong’s words made Zhou Jian Country ponder for a long time.
After a while, he said, "You keep thinking on it. I’m going to look around the building... maybe I can find something useful."
He couldn’t build any large contraptions right now, but he remembered there were some materials here. If he made the most of what was available, he might be able to rig up a few small gadgets.
Yu Dong actually already had two rough strategies in mind, but both carried a certain degree of risk.
Shen Xinyi could die on the way to Building 1.
Fortunately, he had plenty of time to slowly refine and test his plans. Shen Xinyi wasn’t in danger of starving or dying of thirst for now. They would rescue her, one step at a time.
’It’s a good thing it rained, or a lot of people would have died of thirst...’
The rain had also been a great boon for Yu Dong and his group.
After securing all of Building 1, the rooftop had become their territory.
They had already placed a large number of water storage containers on the roof, just waiting for it to rain so they could collect a large supply of clean water.
Their needs for both daily use and drinking water were solved.
Yu Dong stood on the third floor, surveying the post-rain community through his binoculars, trying to come up with a perfect rescue strategy.
"Huh? Why are there three more zombies on the ground?"
"These zombies... they don’t look like they’re from the Xiangti Bay Community."
