Chapter 27: Chapter 25: Now, the Entire Building 1 Is Our Turf

Shen Xinyi was a nurse at Yanhai Second Central Hospital.

She was a minimalist, never adding anything to her home unless it was absolutely necessary. Anything useless was immediately decluttered.

She lived in apartment 502 of Building 3 in the Xiangti Bay Community. It was only 46 square meters, but it was enough for her to live alone.

Her home had no kitchenware because she never cooked. She would either eat at the hospital cafeteria or order takeout.

Minimalism had made her life very convenient, allowing her to travel light, until...

After a week of day shifts, the world changed with a SNAP.

The zombie outbreak began. She was trapped in her home. The police line was dead, and calls to her friends wouldn’t go through. Outside in the hallway, there were always the sounds of running and roaring...

Overnight, the world had isolated her in this 46-square-meter apartment.

She had received the government’s text message and followed the experts’ advice, filling every container in her home with water before it was shut off. At least now she had cold water to drink.

But she had no food at all.

The last thing she’d ordered, a large pizza, had made it to the community’s entrance. She had watched with her own eyes as the delivery guy turned into a zombie right at the gate.

From the start of the viral outbreak three days ago until now, Shen Xinyi hadn’t eaten a single bite... She was dizzy with hunger.

The zombies constantly roaming the hallway kept her from leaving. She was truly out of options now. Her only hope was that there were other survivors in the community who could come and save her—or at least give her something to eat.

She dug out a pair of binoculars she had bought on a trip to a scenic spot once.

Building 3 was parallel to Building 2, so from her position, she could only see Building 1.

She saw an old man hiding in his bedroom get rescued by a man wearing full Delta Force-style body armor.

This ignited a spark of hope for survival!

’I have to get the attention of those people in Building 1 and ask for their help...’

...

"Codename: Workhorse. Before the apocalypse, she was a punctual office worker. Besides being beautiful with long legs... no other memorable features."

Yu Dong gave his assessment.

"Senior, you really love giving people nicknames!" Liu Ye’ye grumbled.

"It makes them easier to remember."

Just now, the team had used the ancient method of writing messages to communicate with Shen Xinyi from a distance and gather some information about her situation.

Zhou wanted to voice his own opinion, but seeing that Yu Dong hadn’t spoken, he swallowed his words.

After a moment of thought, Yu Dong made his decision.

"If we have the ability, we must rescue her. I have two reasons."

"First, she’s a nurse. A nurse’s knowledge of medicine, wound dressing, and general care... will be a huge help to us in the future. It’s a rare skill in the apocalypse."

After hearing this, Zhou’s face showed a hint of embarrassment.

’A university chemistry teacher... who can’t do anything. I’m really not that valuable.’

"Second, and more importantly... she’s a living person. One of us. In this era, we are naturally on the same side."

Zhou nodded vigorously at this!

The useless man was overjoyed.

Liu Ye’ye stuffed a whole-wheat cracker into her mouth.

"That’s easy to say, but to save her, we have to go to Building 3. The zombies on the community grounds, plus the zombies inside Building 3... it’s too complicated and dangerous. We’ll die..."

Yu Dong nodded. "You’re right. That’s why we will save her, but not right now. We’ll make our move when we’ve created the right opportunity."

Hearing this, Zhou Jian Country felt even more relieved.

"But... can she hold on until then?" Liu Ye’ye’s heart softened as she looked over at the little nurse trapped at home.

"That’s where you come in."

"Huh?"

"Use your drone to send over some humanitarian aid."

With Yu Dong’s simple suggestion, it was as if a light bulb went on for Liu Ye’ye.

"Oh, right! My drone can carry a little bit of food. I’ll just have to make a few trips."

"Besides, there’s so much food here that will just go bad if we don’t eat it. It’s no big deal to give it all to her."

Liu Ye’ye brought over the portable cassette stove from the third floor and used the ingredients from the old man’s apartment to whip up some food. She simply boiled some frozen meat and wontons and used the drone to deliver them over several trips.

From a distance, she fed Shen Xinyi until she was full.

When Shen Xinyi took a bite of the hot wontons and meat, she was so moved she broke down crying.

’I never thought wontons could taste this good...’

That meal was her salvation.

After eating, Shen Xinyi took out a piece of paper and wrote a large, two-line message.

[YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!]

[I’LL WAIT FOR YOU!]

Yu Dong glanced at it but didn’t pay it much mind.

He had his own pace. In his plan, Shen Xinyi was just someone he would rescue along the way.

In the process, he would save many more people.

"Let’s go. We’ll continue clearing out zombies."

The three-person team went all out!

Cut the door, block the door, stab the zombies.

The classic door-breaching tactic. Yu Dong used it 18 times in a row without a single mistake!

To speed things up, they stopped collecting supplies from the apartments and focused on killing zombies quickly.

The three-person squad’s teamwork was getting better and better.

Liu Ye’ye handed over tools and provided support, Zhou used the angle grinder to cut the doors, and Yu Dong used the impact drill to make holes.

After opening the door, the two men would immediately stab the zombies to death.

Their efficiency skyrocketed!

In a single day, the three of them cleared out every zombie in Building 1!

That evening, the three of them sat in Liu Ye’ye’s apartment.

Each of them held a can of ice-cold beer they had found in one of the other apartments.

"Cheers!"

"Today’s zombie-clearing operation was a complete success!"

"I declare Building 1... secure!"

Yu Dong was thrilled. He hadn’t expected to clear out Building 1 so quickly.

"A toast to the door-breaching tactic! I finally understand what they mean when they say one good trick is all you need."

Liu Ye’ye raised her beer, her almond-shaped eyes squinting with a smile. Her gaze was fixed on Yu Dong, full of adoration.

She never imagined that, at a time when world order had collapsed, her senior, Yu Dong, would step up and act so decisively, nipping all danger in the bud.

Especially the main gate of the community building’s first floor—Liu Ye’ye didn’t even know when Yu Dong had locked it.

Now, she was filled with a sense of security.

Zhou’s mood today had also gone through three stages: from fear to relief, and then to excitement. His mindset had completely changed!

He raised his beer and shouted, "To Dongzi!"

Yu Dong raised his can as well. "To the team."

"Cheers!"

CLINK!

The three of them clinked their cans. The cold beer went down, and the day’s exhaustion was washed away by the bubbles.

"Now, all of Building 1 is our territory..."

Although they hadn’t inventoried supplies later in the day, the 18 households they had cleared out all had some food. After all, minimalists like Shen Xinyi who didn’t stock up on anything were rare.

Most people were used to keeping some food at home, especially married couples, whose supplies were quite plentiful.

"We won’t be short on food for the next few months..."

They could even live comfortably, worrying every day that they had too much food to finish.

Yu Dong’s own long-shelf-life food could be saved for later.

As for Shen Xinyi... Yu Dong planned to keep feeding her with the frozen goods from the various refrigerators. It would be a waste not to eat them anyway.

After resting for a night, the three-person squad gathered again on the morning of the fifth day of the apocalypse.

"Today, we’re going to inventory and organize all the supplies in Building 1. We’ll consolidate everything and establish a warehouse for our team."

Killing zombies was easy; organizing was hard.

Yu Dong had realized how difficult organizing could be even before the apocalypse.

Fortunately, Building 1 was now completely secure, so they had plenty of time to organize everything slowly.

"Once we’ve finished organizing the resources in Building 1, we’ll start clearing the zombies on the community grounds..."

Yu Dong was playing the long game, gradually planning to turn all of Xiangti Bay into a safe zone.

While they were working with fiery enthusiasm, the property management office was also a hive of activity.
