Chapter 41: Chapter 41: THE TIDE OF OBSIDIAN

The war cries of three thousand elite regional Hunters were swallowed alive by the deafening, apocalyptic roar of the shadow tide.

At the epicenter of the Northern Gate highway, Shadow General Ignis fought like a dark meteor crashing through fragile glass. Its eight-foot frame shattered the Coalition vanguard with terrifying, mechanical efficiency. Every sweeping strike of its abyssal broadsword released violent waves of blackened dragon-fire that instantly melted heavy tower shields into bubbling, white-hot slag, burning through the magic-resistant plate armor of Rank-A Hunters as if it were brittle parchment.

CRASH!

"Hold the line! Tankers, cast your defensive barriers immediately!" shouted an Ironclad Guild officer, his face pale with cold sweat as he shivered behind his heavy tower shield, shoving it forward into the gloom.

Before the magical barrier could fully materialize, Shadow Gregory—the extracted former Association Director—stepped through the thick, acrid smoke. Shadow Gregory slammed his massive black-iron barrier shield directly into the officer’s chest with crushing momentum, the blunt kinetic force fracturing the man’s ribs instantly and launching his body thirty feet backward into his own advancing spellcaster division.

Behind the vanguard, five hundred Shadow Knights moved in silent, horrifying synchronization. They did not scream, they did not bleed, and they felt no fatigue or fear. Whenever a Coalition spellcaster managed to sever a Shadow Knight’s arm with concentrated holy magic or pierce its spectral chest with high-density mana arrows, viscous dark miasma immediately swirled around the gaping wound, restoring the shadow soldier to full fighting strength in less than a single second.

To the three thousand Hunters of the Regional Coalition, they were no longer fighting an army of undead soldiers; they were trying to drain an infinite, violent ocean with broken cups.

"They’re not slowing down! Their ranks aren’t breaking!" a frontline tactical commander screamed frantically over the static-filled radio channels. "Our heavy artillery shells are just empowering their barrier! We’ve lost over two hundred frontline men in less than five minutes!"

"Fall back! Re-form the second defensive line at the toll gates!" another officer yelled into his comms.

"We can’t fall back! The shadows are coming from directly underneath us!"

Panic spread through the Coalition ranks like wildfire across dry timber. The paved asphalt beneath the boots of the rear-guard divisions softened, turning into deep pools of pitch-black, bubbling liquid. From the dark shadows cast by the military trucks and armored artillery tanks, dark, spectral hands reached up, dragging panicked archers and mages down into the pitch-black abyss before driving shadowy blades cleanly through their throats.

High above the slaughter, hovering on crackling platforms of black-and-purple lightning, floated the newly extracted Shadow Commander Elena.

Her spectral eyes burned with cold, fanatical violet fire as she raised both hands toward the dark storm clouds. The very sky answered her call—not with the pure white lightning of her former Eastern Tempest Guild, but with thick, corrupted arcs of necrotic thunder that hissed through the air like striking serpents.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

A dozen black lightning bolts rained down from the sky, striking the twenty mobile mana-artillery tanks stationed along the perimeter highway. The high-density plasma fuel cells inside the heavy vehicles detonated simultaneously, engulfing the entire Coalition artillery division in a series of towering, apocalyptic fireballs that lit up the purple horizon. Shattered metallic chassis and burning debris rained down upon the screaming, disoriented infantry.

Standing in the absolute center of the highway, unmoving and untouched by the chaotic carnage, Renan watched the massacre unfold with cold, unyielding composure.

His dark coat swayed gently in the hot wind created by the burning artillery tanks. Status interfaces flickered rapidly across his field of vision, recording every kill, every drained mana core, and every fallen soul with flawless precision.

"Rise," Renan commanded, his voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying the resonant, layered weight of an absolute Monarch’s decree that vibrated through the earth beneath their feet.

The blood spilling across the eight-lane highway suddenly stopped flowing down into the drainage grates. Instead, the crimson liquid turned black as ink, seeping back into the shadows of the corpses scattered across the ruined pavement.

One by one, the fallen Hunters began to twitch violently.

Dark, viscous miasma erupted from their fatal wounds, coating their broken armor in pitch-black steel and turning their lifeless eyes into burning pools of violet flame. Within seconds, nearly two hundred newly slain Coalition Hunters pushed themselves up off the ground, turning around to face their former comrades with dark steel weapons raised.

"No... no, God please no..." a young Rank-B Spearman stammered, dropping his polearm onto the road as he recognized the dark, armored form standing directly in front of him. "Captain Jackson...? Is that really you...?"

The shadow entity that was once Captain Jackson did not answer. It raised its dark steel spear and lunged forward with ruthless, inhuman speed, driving the point through the young spearman’s visor.

Despair, absolute and total, gripped the heart of the Regional Coalition.

Watching his vanguard collapse into absolute chaos from the center ridge, Marcus "The Blood Blade"—the Guild Master of the Western Ironclad—felt a cold, suffocating terror he had never experienced in his thirty years as an S-Rank Hunter. Beside him, the remaining three Regional Guild Masters from the Northern Frost, Central Aegis, and Shadow Fang Syndicate stood completely frozen, their hands trembling over their weapon hilts.

"This isn’t a battle..." the Guild Master of Central Aegis stammered, his face ghastly pale as his heavy tower shield slipped an inch toward the ground. "We brought three thousand elite men to seal off a Calamity... but we just brought him a fresh slaughterhouse."

"Shut your mouth!" Marcus roared, his veins bulging along his neck as his crimson S-Rank aura flared wildly around his body, cracking the pavement beneath his boots. "We are S-Rank Hunters! We represent the martial strength of this entire nation! If we break here, Sector 1 falls, and there will be nowhere left on this continent to run!"

Marcus pointed his massive crimson broadsword directly at Renan, who was slowly walking forward through the field of corpses, flanked by Shadow General Ignis and Shadow Commander Elena.

"Focus all remaining heavy divisions on the caster!" Marcus bellowed into his command headset. "Guild Masters, charge with me! We take his head right now, or we die on this highway!"

Renan stopped ten paces away from the oncoming storm of S-Rank aura shockwaves, a cold, razor-sharp smirk curving on his lips as his golden eyes flared with absolute, unyielding dominance.

"Come," Renan murmured into the howling gale, stepping forward as the shadows behind him expanded to swallow the sky. "Show me if your souls are worth adding to my throne."
