Chapter 17: The Echoes of the Sovereign
Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Echoes of the Sovereign
The storm over Sector 1 did not clear with the dawn.
Instead, a heavy gray mist hung low between the glass skyscrapers, carrying the lingering smell of ozone, scorched concrete, and dried blood.
By eight in the morning, the perimeter around the ruined Apex Guild Headquarters was sealed off by three layers of military-grade razor wire. Tanks from the National Defense Force lined the surrounding avenues, their long turrets pointed nervously at the fifty-story building. Yet not a single soldier dared to step past the shattered marble lobby steps where forty mercenary helmets still lay scattered in the mud.
In the subterranean command center of Sector 4, three hundred feet beneath the city, the atmosphere was a stark contrast of chaotic efficiency.
Holographic displays projected real-time financial maps, gate ownership certificates, and supply logistics across the damp concrete walls. Dozens of former syndicate operators worked frantically at their terminals, their fingers blurring across mechanical keyboards.
Boss Victor stood before a massive central holo-table, his hands sweating as he adjusted his spectacles. He looked exhausted, but his eyes burned with a mixture of terror and feverish ambition.
"Sector 1 financial accounts have been completely absorbed," Victor reported, turning toward the shadow-draped corner of the room. "We’ve seized ninety-two high-tier dungeon gate licenses previously held by Apex Guild. The regional banks have frozen their legal challenges after receiving... a demonstration of our shadow network’s reach."
From the darkness of the alcove, Renan stepped into the dim neon light of the command center.
He wore a clean, dark high-collar combat coat, his hair slightly unkempt, his appearance calm and remarkably refined. Yet the ambient pressure radiating from his frame made the air in the room feel thin and metallic.
"And the corpse supply?" Renan asked, his voice low, measured, and cut with absolute precision.
Victor swallowed hard, pulling up a secondary logistics map that highlighted green transit corridors stretching across three neighboring provinces.
"My contacts in the Underground Alliance have worked through the night," Victor explained, tapping a holographic node. "With Guild Master Richard gone and the Association in total disarray, every illegal dungeon disposal unit in the eastern territory is dumping their inventory directly to us. They’re afraid if they don’t sell to the Ominous Faction, they’ll be visited by the Shadow Knights."
Victor paused, taking a shaky breath before bringing up a massive vault inventory counter.
"As of twenty minutes ago, three subterranean storage facilities in Sector 1 have been filled to capacity," Victor said, his voice dropping into a reverent whisper. "We have accumulated four thousand two hundred unrefined monster carcasses—ranging from Tier-B Magma Drakes to Tier-A Iron-Hide Behemoths."
Renan looked at the glowing green counter floating in the air.
[Current Corpse Inventory: 4,200 Units.] [Estimated Attribute Gain: +1,800 Strength / +1,600 Vitality / +2,100 Mana.]
A faint, cold smile flickered across Renan’s lips.
"Four thousand," Renan whispered. "A acceptable starting foundation for the next phase."
"L-Lord Renan," Victor hesitated, pulling a encrypted black data slate from his coat pocket. "There’s... another matter. The Capital hasn’t remained silent."
Renan didn’t look surprised. "Speak."
"An hour ago, the National Hunter Association issued an official decree to all five major Regional Guilds," Victor said, handing the data slate to Renan. "They have formed the Regional Coalition Task Force. Five S-Rank Guild Masters—including ’The Blood Blade’ Marcus from the North and ’The Iron Empress’ Catherine from the West—have mobilized their primary assault divisions. They are massing three thousand Rank-A and Rank-S Hunters at the border of Sector 1."
Renan swept his thumb across the slate, scanning the profiles of the five S-Rank Guild Masters.
Marcus Vane (S-Rank Offense Specialist): Known for his brutal blood-magic blades and clearing twelve Class-S gate breakouts.
Catherine Vance (S-Rank Shield Sovereign): Leader of the Western Vanguard, possesses an indestructible diamond-elemental aura.
Kaelen Voss (S-Rank Elementalist): Master of wide-area lightning spells.
Jared Drake (S-Rank Assassin): Head of the Shadow Division in the Southern Coalition.
General Ironclad (S-Rank Military Vanguard): Commander of the Association’s heavy mechanized unit.
Three thousand elite Hunters. Five legendary S-Rank Guild Masters. Supported by the entire logistical machine of the National Government.
To any ordinary Hunter, this coalition represented an absolute, unstoppable tidal wave of destruction.
To Renan, it was simply an oversized delivery of high-grade raw components.
"They think numbers will grant them courage," Renan said dryly, tossing the slate back onto the holographic table where it shattered into fine plastic dust under his passive aura. "They believe that by pooling their weak titles together, they can stand against an absolute entity."
DING!
A crimson system panel flared open directly in front of Renan’s vision:
[System Notice: Regional Coalition Threat Detected.] [Main Quest Unlocked: The Slaughter of the Five Pillars.] [Objective: Neutralize the 5 Regional S-Rank Guild Masters.] [Reward: System Evolution to Tier-3 (Monarch Awakening) & Unlimited Shadow Army Limit.]
Renan’s purple pupils burned with a violent, predatory radiance as he read the system prompt.
Unlimited Shadow Army Limit.
Currently, his Tier-2 Sovereign System capped his shadow army at fifty soldiers. But if he triggered the Tier-3 Evolution by consuming the five Regional Guild Masters, he would no longer be limited by human vessel constraints. He could raise an army of ten thousand shadows directly from the battlefield.
"Victor," Renan turned his back on the command table, stepping toward the subterranean vault entrance.
"Y-Yes, Lord Renan?!"
"Seal the subterranean vault doors for the next twelve hours," Renan ordered, his voice echoing down the dark stone corridor. "No one enters. No one leaves."
"Understood, my Lord! Are you... preparing for battle?"
Renan stopped at the heavy iron doors of the storage vault, his dark combat coat fluttering as a storm of dense violet shadow energy began to leak from his skin.
"I am going to eat," Renan replied softly.
BOOM!
The four-ton iron doors of the corpse vault slammed shut, locking Renan inside with four thousand dead monsters.
Inside the freezing darkness of Subterranean Vault 3.
The room was vast, chilled by blue ice runes, stretches for two hundred yards in every direction. Stacked on massive iron racks were thousands of monstrous carcasses—scaled beasts with razor-sharp talons, giant winged reptiles, and armored drakes that still radiated faint traces of wild, unrefined mana.
Renan stood in the exact center of the frozen hall.
He didn’t bother using a single carcass at a time. He slowly raised both hands into the air, throwing his head back as his purple pupils burned through the pitch-black darkness.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: MASS EXTRACTION (RANK-S)]
RUMBLE-RUMBLE-RUMBLE!
The entire subterranean cavern shook as if struck by a massive earthquake.
A terrifying, seventy-foot vortex of pitch-black and dark violet shadow energy erupted from Renan’s chest, expanding violently across the entire room. The dark mist slammed into the thousands of frozen carcasses, tearing through ice blocks, dissolving dragon scales, and stripping the flesh and residual mana straight from the bones of four thousand two hundred monsters.
CRACK-CRACK-CRACK-SHATTER!
Thousands of glowing energy rivers—crimson, emerald, violet, and electric blue—erupted from the decaying carcasses, rising into the air like a magnificent aurora of pure power.
The energy rivers spiraled wildly above Renan’s head before plunging directly into his chest.
"NNNGH!"
Renan’s veins bulged against his skin, glowing with incandescent purple light. His bones clicked, reorganized, and hardened to a density that transcended human biology. His heart beat like a heavy iron drum, vibrating through the concrete floor of the vault.
DING! DING! DING! DING!
[Mass Corpse Extraction in Progress...] [Strength +1,200!] [Agility +1,100!] [Vitality +1,400!] [Mana +1,800!]
[Physical Attribute Threshold Crossed: 3,000 Points!] [Vessel Refinement Completed: Skeleton Reinforced with Abyssal Density!] [Passive Skill Evolved: Aegis Shell -> Sovereign’s Armor (Rank-EX)]
BOOM!
A shockwave of pure, unadulterated kinetic force exploded outward from Renan’s body, pulverizing the metal racks and turning four thousand monster carcasses into fine, weightless gray dust that swirled around his feet like a desert sandstorm.
Renan slowly lowered his hands, taking a single deep breath.
He opened his status panel:

Renan flexed his fingers. He felt as though he could punch a hole through the continental crust with his bare fist without using a single skill.
Suddenly, a sharp, urgent ping echoed from his communication device.
"LORD RENAN!" Victor’s panicked voice cut through the static speaker. "THE REGIONAL COALITION HAS BROKEN THE BORDER! Three thousand Hunters led by S-Rank Guild Master Marcus have just crossed into Sector 1’s Northern Gate! They are executing every Syndicate member on sight!"
Renan stepped out of the gray dust cloud, his dark eyes glowing in the pitch-black vault with an unholy, absolute desire for war.
"Marcus," Renan whispered, stepping into his own shadow as his body dissolved into black smoke.
"Thank you for bringing your army to my front door."
At the Northern Gate of Sector 1, S-Rank Guild Master Marcus stood atop a pile of burning Syndicate vehicles, wiping blood from his red broadsword as he looked up at the sky—only to watch the sun instantly vanish behind a hundred-mile-wide storm of dark violet lightning.
