Chapter 39: Kick him out of here
Adeline woke up to a nightmare where she saw Janessa was laughing at her for being beaten up by her father. It was a memory when she was quite young... Twelve or thirteen and the scene would come to her mind as a nightmare.
She sat up with beads of sweat on her temples.
"You’re no longer in that house," she whispered to herself while caressing her chest.
Turning her head, she didn’t find Gideon in the bed. Her eyes quickly checked the time but it 6:15 am. Leaving the bed, Adeline went to her own bedroom and freshened up first before heading downstairs in the hope she would see Gideon.
"Did he already leave for the work? I wonder what’s the situation here? I didn’t even ask him," she murmured while descending the stairs slowly.
"Adeline!"
The name echoed through the hall, and she froze. She recognized that voice instantly. It was Gideon’s half-brother, Ensley.
"It is a pleasure to see you so early in the morning," Ensley said, a sharp smirk cutting across his face as he watched her from the base of the stairs.
"Wh-what are you... I mean, what is the Prince doing here?" she stuttered, quickly correcting her tone to show the proper respect for his rank, though her heart was hammering against her ribs. Why was he here at the Western Border?
"I thought it best to help my brother," Ensley answered, spreading his hands wide in a gesture that felt entirely theatrical. "That’s why I’m here. Aren’t you happy to see me, my soon-to-be sister-in-law?" He mused, his eyes trailing over her with an unsettling intensity.
Before Adeline could even draw breath to reply, Ensley blurred. He appeared directly in front of her on the steps, his sudden proximity startling her so much that she gasped and lost her footing. As she began to fall backward, Ensley’s hand shot out, catching her by the waist.
Just then, Gideon entered the hall with Micah. The moment his gaze landed on Ensley’s hand on Adeline, his eyes bled into a deep red.
In a blur of motion that defied the human eye, Gideon was across the hall. He shoved Ensley away with such brute force that the younger prince was sent flying, hitting the bottom of the stairs before skidding across the floor. Gideon didn’t look at him; he simply kept a firm, protective hold on Adeline’s back, pulling her flush against his side.
Ensley groaned as he balanced himself, dusting off his clothes with a nonchalant air. "Is this how you treat your younger brother, Your Highness?" Ensley’s tongue poked into the side of his cheek as he ran a hand through his hair, his eyes dancing with a dangerous deep blue light.
Gideon ignored Ensley’s taunt entirely, his focus remaining solely on the trembling woman in his arms. He scanned her face.
"Did he hurt you in any way?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that barely concealed his rage.
"No. He didn’t," Adeline replied breathlessly, her hands clutching the fabric of Gideon’s coat for stability.
"Kick him out of here," Gideon ordered. His voice was cold, devoid of any familial warmth. Micah didn’t hesitate, stepping forward to execute the command.
"Brother, wait. Before you do something reckless, let me show you a decree our father issued last night," Ensley stated, his tone dripping with mock concern.
He remained where he stood, his hand lowering to his side as he watched Gideon’s reaction. "The Alpha King wants me to assist you here in the Western Borders. As per his command, I am to stay here. If you kick me out, you’ll be defying the Alpha King himself. That would be considered treason, wouldn’t it?"
Gideon’s grip on Adeline tightened, his jaw locking so hard a muscle pulsed in his cheek.
"Micah, do exactly what you were told," Gideon asserted. "I don’t care what paper he holds. I don’t want to see his pathetic face in this villa. Get him out."
"Your Highness, please... this way," Micah said as he gestured toward the entrance, his body positioned to physically usher Ensley out if necessary.
"Adeline, you’re a smart woman. Why don’t you tell my brother to listen to reason?" Ensley asked, his gaze sliding back to her with a look that felt like a physical touch. "I merely caught you from falling. I didn’t have any ill intent. Besides, I despise Omegas for a reason; you aren’t exactly my type."
The comment made Adeline’s brow furrow in a sharp frown. The insult to her rank was expected, but his feigned innocence was not.
"The way you suddenly appeared in front of me didn’t seem like good intentions either, Prince Ensley," she retorted, her voice regaining some of its strength as she leaned into Gideon’s solid frame.
Gideon could feel the slight tremor in her hands; she was still shaken. He turned his head slowly to look at his brother, his eyes flashing with a promise of violence. "I swear to you, Ensley, I will bury you alive if you ever put your hands on her again."
"I won’t," Ensley said, lifting his hands in a mock gesture of surrender, though his smirk never truly vanished. "I apologize, Adeline, for scaring you like that. It was never my intention to startle such a... delicate woman."
"You are not staying here. Get out. I don’t want to fight you, Ensley," Gideon pronounced. "Since you are here to ’help’ me, then you can live in the tents among the warriors. That is the best place for a warrior, isn’t it?"
Before Ensley could open his mouth to protest, Gideon’s eyes narrowed further. "Your mother isn’t here to intervene and whisper in our father’s ear. Here, my word is the only rule that matters. Get out of my sight while I am still asking you nicely."
Ensley’s jaw tightened, a flash of genuine resentment crossing his features. He turned toward the door, but paused at the threshold, glancing back over his shoulder.
"Adeline, I have a feeling we will be seeing quite a lot of each other," Ensley said with enough provocation to ignite the room.
Gideon’s muscles coiled like a spring; he was ready to lunge and grab him by the throat, but Adeline’s fingers suddenly clamped around his forearm.
"Don’t," she whispered, shaking her head at him.
