Chapter 16: Chapter 15: I Have a Boyfriend
Chen Lin was a little speechless.
’You can recognize me from a picture that blurry?’
’Is this the legendary, irrational sixth sense women supposedly have?’
He complained internally, but his face remained calm as he decided to play dumb.
"What post? No idea." Chen Lin said without batting an eye. "Who’s Shen Yan? Don’t know her."
He projected an air of unwavering confidence.
However, Yunqing was clearly not so easily fooled.
Instead of being put off by his attitude, a gossipy glint sparkled in her eyes.
She waved her phone, the WeChat contacts screen flashing for a moment. "I have Shen Yan as a friend, you know. Or... should I ask her right now if she went for a walk last weekend with a handsome, physically fit guy who has a soft spot for cats?"
Chen Lin’s heart skipped a beat, and a hint of panic set in.
It wasn’t that he was afraid of what Shen Yan might say. He was mainly worried that someone with Yunqing’s overly familiar personality would actually go and send some weird messages, causing unnecessary trouble for Shen Yan.
"No," he instinctively tried to stop her. "Don’t just randomly message her. I’m not dating her. We just happened to run into each other that day and talked about something."
As expected, this time it was Yunqing’s turn to be surprised. Her bright eyes widened.
"Whoa! So it really was you!"
Chen Lin: "? You were just guessing?"
"Well, not a complete guess," Yunqing said with a grin, making no effort to hide her little trick. "The photo is blurry, but your height and build really match the guy in the picture. And I was just bluffing about asking Shen Yan. For a cold, top student like her, even if I wanted to get to know her, she probably wouldn’t give me the time of day!"
Chen Lin was completely speechless. "Then how do you have her on WeChat?"
"I’m on the student council." Yunqing tilted her chin up matter-of-factly, a hint of pride in her voice. "When your class of freshmen enrolled, I basically added all the pretty girls as friends. It makes it easier to network for future student council events, you know."
’A social terrorist!’
Chen Lin silently slapped a label on Yunqing in his mind.
Yunqing seemed completely unaware of Chen Lin’s internal grumbling. Instead, she leaned a little closer with that same teasing tone and lowered her voice.
"Junior Chen Lin, since you’re not dating Shen Yan, are you single or do you have a girlfriend?"
She gave him a playful wink. "Depending on your performance from now on, if you help your senior out a lot, and I’m in a good mood, I’ll introduce you to a beauty on the same level as Shen Yan."
Chen Lin found this amusing.
’She’s only a year older than me, and her real-world experience might not even be as rich as mine, yet she’s already putting on the airs of a boss.’
’Besides, do I need someone to introduce me to girls?’
He currently had the "Little Love Saint" halo. Once the system stepped up its game and gave him a few more titles, how hard could it be to chase pretty girls?
He couldn’t be bothered to argue with Yunqing any further and tossed out a casual reply.
"No need, Senior. I have a boyfriend."
Yunqing: "?"
The smile on her bright, charming face froze instantly.
Seeing her expression, Chen Lin’s mood inexplicably improved. He waved his hand and turned to leave.
"Just kidding."
He left her with that one cool line and walked away without looking back, continuing toward the computer science section of the bookshelves.
Behind him, Yunqing stood stunned for several seconds before realizing she’d been had.
Watching his retreating figure, she didn’t get angry. Instead, she let out a PFFT of laughter, her beautiful, crescent-shaped eyes filled with even deeper curiosity.
’This junior is kind of interesting.’
Chen Lin paid no mind to the gaze from behind him and quickly found the book he was looking for.
Python Mathematical Programming.
The cover featured a snake writing mathematical formulas on a blackboard, which seemed right up his alley.
He really didn’t need the kind of beginner books that held your hand from scratch, teaching you how to install the environment, define variables, or write a loop function.
His goal wasn’t to become a true programmer, but to apply the mathematical abilities of the "Little Mathematician" to solve real-world problems through programming.
The content of this book was a perfect match for his needs.
Standing in front of the bookshelf, Chen Lin quickly flipped through the table of contents.
There were seven Chapters in total. Chapter 1: "Working with Numbers," Chapter 2: "Visualizing Data," Chapter 3: "Statistical Characterization of Data"... The later Chapters were about more specific applications in algebra, Calculus, and probability theory.
’Great. This is the one.’
He glanced at his watch. It was just after nine in the morning, and he had an elective class at 2:30 PM.
He decided to finish the first two Chapters before class.
Carrying the book, Chen Lin turned and went back to his private study room.
「Modu. 2:30 PM.」
At that same moment, on the seventeenth floor of an office building, Sun Yu finally typed the last line of comments into the document.
Running on only four hours of sleep, he had finally managed to organize the incomprehensible scribbles from the two sheets of scratch paper that the great "CL" had given him yesterday into a reasonably neat PDF document.
Although he still didn’t fully understand more than half of the formulas and theoretical derivations, he had truly given it his all. His brain had turned to mush.
Sporting two huge dark circles under his eyes, he walked over to his team lead’s desk with his phone in hand.
"Um, Team Lead," his voice was faint. "For the new project’s spatial-curved reticulated shell roof structure, I’ve finished the new calculation plan for the linear buckling analysis. I just sent the PDF to your email. Please take a look when you have a moment."
The team lead was a typical middle-aged man, wearing a pair of round-framed glasses, his hairline already showing a distinct "Mediterranean" pattern.
He was looking down, his fingers flying across the WeChat chat box. A greasy smile was on his face; there was no telling who he was chatting with.
Hearing Sun Yu, he didn’t even lift his head, just grunted an "Mm" through his nose and gave a perfunctory reply, "Oh, okay."
And that was it.
An indescribable sense of disappointment washed over Sun Yu.
But he was simply too exhausted and didn’t have the energy to say anything more. He could only drag his weary body back to his own desk, planning to put his head down for a quick nap.
Just as he sat down, his phone screen lit up with an incoming call.
"Hello, your package has arrived. It’s been placed in the delivery locker on the B1 floor. The pickup code is..."
Sun Yu’s spirits lifted. He remembered—his custom phone case had arrived.
He forced his body to go downstairs and found his package in the delivery locker. Tearing open the packaging in a flash, a brand-new phone case appeared before him.
He took the phone case back upstairs, finally feeling completely drained. He didn’t even have the strength to put it on his phone.
He collapsed at his desk, head cradled on his arms, and fell asleep instantly.
The new phone case slipped from his limp hand, landing silently beside his arm.
The back of the phone case was printed with his favorite anime character.
Chestnut-brown hair, a cool and intelligent gaze, and a white lab coat.
Makise Kurisu.
