Chapter 31: The Rabble
Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The Rabble
A day and a night had passed since the zombies from the entire street gathered below Lin Fan’s building. Just as he’d predicted, the horde was beginning to disperse.
Instead of being packed tightly together, they were now spread out over a radius of several dozen meters.
Lin Fan turned and retrieved two pairs of binoculars from a cabinet. He handed one to Su Qing. One pair was his, and the other he’d found on the sixth floor.
The sky was growing dim, and at this distance, he could only make out vague human shapes, even through the binoculars.
It wasn’t just one person. After the first figure emerged, three more followed in quick succession.
All four were bundled up, covering themselves completely. They moved with extreme caution, clearly not a group of reckless amateurs.
After slipping through the fence, the group scanned the zombies in the distance, then made a beeline for the small supermarket across the street.
The row of storefronts over there mostly had glass doors. Even though they were secured with chain locks, it probably wouldn’t be hard to break them open.
Their objective was crystal clear; they must have planned this. With most of the zombies on the street drawn to Lin Fan’s building, they had the perfect opportunity to make their move.
Lin Fan had wondered before. ’There’s no way Su Qing and I are the only two people left alive in this entire complex, right?’
But he hadn’t seen anyone else in the past two days. The only things moving below were zombies.
’So, the other survivors are all hiding in their homes, too scared to go outside.’
’Then again, it made sense. Even with my Superpower, I myself have been confined to the building for the past two days. Forget leaving the complex; just stepping out the lobby door is an enormous risk.’
It was like the cockroach theory: if you see four, it means there are plenty more hiding in their homes throughout the complex.
The rash, the impulsive, and those forced to venture out after their food ran out had, for the most part, already joined the horde downstairs.
But those with a decent supply of food, who were lucky enough not to have been turned or eaten, would have no problem holding out for five days.
A normal household usually has at least four or five days’ worth of food.
These people, on the other hand, had clearly run out of food and were forced to go searching.
You could tell they’d been starving for at least a day; each person’s Life Value bar was only a little over half full.
But scavenging right under the zombies’ noses was never that easy, even with most of the horde gathered below Lin Fan’s building.
The group had just crossed the sidewalk and hadn’t even made it to the street yet when a few distant, wandering zombies began shuffling toward them.
"Ah!"
Su Qing let out a soft gasp, having clearly spotted the approaching zombies.
Lin Fan, too, felt a cold sweat break out on their behalf.
Although they were armed with clubs and other makeshift weapons, Lin Fan knew the zombies were still too far away to have locked onto them as prey.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t be shuffling over so slowly. Lin Fan knew firsthand how fast enraged zombies could move.
But the group grew nervous seeing the zombies approach and unconsciously huddled together.
Their faces were all covered, so he couldn’t see them communicating, but one of them pulled a shiny, silver object with a cord attached from his pocket... ’A slingshot?’
As if to confirm Lin Fan’s suspicion, the person raised the object, pulling back on it with his other hand. It was, indeed, a slingshot.
And he was aiming... directly at the densest part of the horde below Lin Fan’s building.
The man pulled the band back as far as it would go and suddenly let it fly.
"CRACK!"
The rear window of a sedan parked on the street below Lin Fan’s building suddenly shattered!
The car’s lights began to flash wildly as its alarm started blaring: "BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!"
The immense noise sent the hundreds of zombies, which had just begun to disperse, into a collective frenzy. They swarmed the blaring sedan!
The sedan couldn’t possibly withstand so many zombies. Its doors and windows were battered and shattered. A few zombies even scrambled into the car through the broken glass!
The more furiously the zombies attacked, the louder the car alarm blared.
Before long, the sedan was completely buried under layers upon layers of zombies.
The zombies that had been drawn to the group of survivors were, naturally, distracted by the much louder commotion behind them and turned to charge toward the source of the noise.
Seizing the opportunity, the group sprinted across the street, smashed the lock, and slipped into the supermarket.
Watching the zombie horde reconverge below because of the car alarm, Lin Fan’s expression darkened.
’Damn it... and to think I was actually worried about them.’
It was a good solution, just one that completely screwed someone else over.
Cursing aside, Lin Fan could understand their actions. After all, they had no way of knowing if anyone was in his building.
Besides, if luring the horde to another building meant saving his own life, even Lin Fan would do it without a moment’s hesitation.
Under the zombies’ relentless assault, it wasn’t just the one car; the alarms of the cars in front of and behind it started going off as well.
Listening to the incessant car alarms from below, Lin Fan knew that two days ago, he would have been incredibly anxious. Now, however, he was indifferent.
Too many lice, and you stop scratching. Too much debt, and you stop worrying.
Su Qing, however, was still far more nervous than he was.
She knew that no matter how much of a racket the zombies made downstairs, they couldn’t possibly climb to the third floor.
Still, she couldn’t help but retreat a little, her body practically shrinking behind Lin Fan. Her soft chest pressed tightly against his back as she peeked out from one side, raising her binoculars to watch nervously.
About five or six minutes later, two figures carrying large bags burst out of the supermarket.
But in contrast to their earlier caution, they now seemed particularly frantic.
Lin Fan didn’t understand why until a few more figures burst out after them.
Four people went in, but six came out...
Six figures were now running down the street, four of them carrying bags.
The first four were in a sorry state, their heavy shopping bags banging against their knees and shins as they ran. The last two figures, however, moved with much more ease, relentlessly gaining on them.
Clearly, the two empty-handed figures bringing up the rear were zombies.
Seeing this, Su Qing, who was still behind him, grabbed his arm, her grip unconsciously tightening.
’They’re in danger...’
Lin Fan noted silently. He, however, no longer felt the initial anxiety he’d had for them.
He had only ever fought zombies indoors, so he wasn’t clear on their mobility and perception in open spaces.
This was a rare opportunity to observe them.
But as the old saying goes, you don’t have to outrun the tiger; you just have to outrun your friends.
The zombies’ movements seemed stiff, but when enraged, their sprinting speed was clearly greater than that of the four people burdened with bags.
The four survivors were probably already starving, and after the burst of intense activity, their Life Values had all dropped by two points.
Meanwhile, the zombies behind them showed two bright red [300/300] Life Value bars, completely unchanged.
The distance between them was closing fast. It looked like the person at the back of the group was about to be caught!
"There are four of them! They have weapons! Why don’t they turn around and fight!"
Su Qing asked in an anxious whisper, her hand tightening on Lin Fan’s arm.
Just then, the situation changed abruptly!
As if he’d heard Su Qing’s words, the man running at the very front glanced back and saw the zombies were about to catch the person at the rear.
He hesitated for only a second before dropping the two plastic bags he was carrying. He then turned and pulled a steel pipe from one of them, gripping it firmly.
Waving for two of the others to join him, he charged toward the approaching zombies!
